DC's teachers are both 23yo

Should I be concerned that my DS's teachers (both of them) are only 22 and 23 years old??? 4th and 5th grade respectively. I am concerned that they have no experience and are recent graduates. This year is already going to be so difficult with the new requirements. Are these kids really going to be able to teach mine? Please, someone talk me off the ledge as I am freaking out.

They are probably good with technology, not set in an old way of thinking and eager to shine. Given the current circumstances I think it’s a good thing!

Every teacher was once 23 and fresh out of school.
Honestly they are probably eager to make a good impression and motivated and enthusiastic. When I was that age I had a lot more enthusiasm and energy for my job than I do now to be honest.
Dd had some older, more experienced teachers that I thought were terrible so I don't think age has anything to do with performance to be honest

I personally like working with younger teachers. I feel they are eager to do their best, think outside the box and are more comfortable with technology which is really needed right now. I would have no problems with younger teachers.

No, that is not something I would be upset about at all. It really depends on the person, not their age.

That said, I have the opposite bias. My son had a really bad teacher who was older and should have retired. Zero patience, screamed at the kids and entire class regularly, withheld their snack as punishment (second graders). It was horrible. On the other hand, I am hopeful that young/recent graduates will have more energy, more current knowledge, be more motivated and better with technology, more relatable etc. My other son was just assigned a new, young teacher, and we are thrilled.

My DS’s youngest teacher that he had for 2 years in elementary was by far the best teacher he’s ever had. Really eager, hardworking and super sweet! Good luck!

I agree with everyone else. Especially this year. Absolutely everything is "new", so a young teacher should have a much easier time adopting to this year's norm, as opposed to a more experienced teacher who will have to learn to adapt to this new format.

Everyone is a first year teacher this year - lol.

The good thing about a first year teacher is that they probably don’t have many family responsibilities. For my first 8 years, I would spend all my free time planning. Weekends, breaks, etc. Now I have a young child who takes up most of my free time so all planning has to be done at work. Two weeks ago, I was playing the Pokémon card game while trying to prep my website. Meanwhile, my young coworker planned all her lessons until Thanksgiving already.

Yes! I agree with previous posters. The younger teachers are eager and willing to work. Plus, like someone else said, they probably don't have any family obligations and can really focus on their students. I'm sure they'll do really well.

If the teachers are right out of school, they were likely students in online classes themselves in the spring semester. As a result, they could potentially have an understanding of online learning that others, who have not experienced online learning from a student's perspective, do not.

My niece is 24 and a first year teacher. She has such drive and ambition, I’d be thrilled if my kids had a teacher like her!!

She’s planned her lessons up until Thanksgiving

I feel like I was the best teacher when I was in my mid 20's before having kids. I wouldn't worry. They put in extra effort and usually get extra mentoring/help.

Give them a chance. Every great teacher started out as a new grad. I am sure it'll be a great year despite their age and newness to the profession. Hope for the best and keep the lines of communication open with them.

The young teachers at our school are the ones every parent wants their kids to get! They have so many great new ideas and the kids a blast while learning.

My son is in 8th grade and his ELA teacher was 23 last year and his STEM teacher who he has had since 6th grade is 24.

They relate so well with the kids. Basically because they are, lol.

But I like it, his ELA teacher got him hooked on Harry Potter because she loved them. His STEM teacher is fantastic as well

Don't be concerned, every teacher had to start somewhere. This year, it's like we are all brand new teachers with new regulations, new ways of teaching etc. They will definitely be more advanced in terms of the technology you will be using. I am feeling like a dinosaur this year, it's my 23rd year teaching-I'm old, I'm trying to teach myself all of this new tech and I feel like I have never taught before!
