None of these college kids are even that sick - there have been zero hospitalizations and most have no or cold like symptoms, they were just tested as they were exposed to a few individuals who have had pneumonia like symptoms.

I do believe in the science - and the science says the majority of us are going to get it, the virus isn't going away.

We flattened the curve, our kids should be able to go to school full time. It's day 2 and we are asynchronous. I got up at 6am to work since I know I'm going to be swamped with school work.

Nobody wants to hear that though.
The real numbers to be looking at are hospitalizations and deaths- not positive cases.

You cannot choose to go back to normal during a pandemic. The pandemic chooses for you. If there's another outbreak, everything will shut down again. More people could get sick and the economy could further suffer because of your kid's party or you not having to wear a mask at Disney (which takes the cake, IMO).

Also, this obsession some of you have with hugging people is super creepy. I hug my kid and my DH. Do you normally hug strangers? Bizarre.

Yes, that was me who mentioned being sad about not being able to go to Disney. I also stated that we're small business owners who have faced losing our livelihood over this pandemic, so I really think I'm the last person to be pinned for complaining about "silly" things.

We're essential workers who have been face to face with the public the whole way through, at work everyday. No staying home trying out new arts and crafts, watching Netflix, we're out there risking our lives if you want to get dramatic about it.

And yes, I'm sad that I can't hug my parents and my kids can't hug their grandparents. If you find that creepy then that's just sad. I don't like touching strangers (I'm actually not a very social person) but I almost more so don't like feeling afraid to get too close to anyone.

To the people who enjoy this "simple life", it was always there and you're welcome to continue with it! I'm sorry it took a pandemic for you to realize your social and home life preference. I don't need to socialize often but I've come to realize that I really do enjoy it here and there.

I'm blown away by how many people think we're basically in the same place that we were back in February.

Ok - so the first line of the article is the tone of the whole article? I can't read the whole thing lol.

My neighbor is also in isolation at Oneonta with mild symptoms. She is scared because she has COVID but not that sick.

Yes some people got sicker than others during the COVID outbreak but, it wasn't as bad as the outbreaks in the spring.

I guess we need to wait for the vaccine that only 1 in 4 people will be taking...

When we talk about back to normal what are you really saying? Stores are open, restaurants are open, places we go to are open. Yes, schools have been closed but the school year is just starting. I have been out to eat multiple times now. Both indoor and out, and there has never been a wait , even with a 25 or 33% capacity limit. I guess I am not really sure what people are asking for? No masks? If its allowing these things to be open and stopping the spread then why not?
People are having weddings and parties, etc.

I hear people complaining about all this doom and gloom but its a lot of the times from people who want things to "go back to normal". Like life is ending because they have to wear a mask.

I don't want to wear a mask. EVER. I don't want my kids to have to interact with kids and be in school with a mask.

I don't want to social distance.

I want to be able to go to and have weddings, parties, large gatherings, holidays.

I want to plan a vacation again and travel without worry.

I want people to stop being afraid of one another and running the other direction so they "don't catch something".

I want to go shopping and eat out among others. EVERY place feels like a ghost town, it's weird.

I miss concerts and movies and festivals and fairs and ALL of the activities that make life fun.

I miss looking forward to things. I am just trying to get by day by day, I certainly am not enjoying my life like I use to just 7 short months ago. I want to feel positive and happy again. Truly happy.

And did I mention, I do NOT want to live my life behind a mask. I DESPISE them. Normal life is moving freely through your day without covering your face. I HATE it. The sooner masks go away, the better.

Life right now is FAR from normal. This is some weird alternate "normal" that SUCKS. School is weird. Kids activities are weird. People's interactions are weird. Being out in public is weird. Life is just plain weird.

So yes, I want our "old normal" back. The normal where we hug, interact, smile, get together, travel and enjoy our lives. What we're doing now is living in fear and simply EXISTING, we aren't LIVING.

We won't.

Of course we will return to normal at some point.

You think people will tolerate this way of life forever? You think people are just going to settle into a life of masks and social distancing forever? You think our kids can survive this hybrid, half school, remote, socially distanced, odd way of education forever? You think businesses can handle the immense loss of revenue forever? You think restaurants can stay afloat at 25-50% capacity forever? You think the airlines and the travel industry can tolerate the immense drop in travel forever?

Of course not.

Society and the economy are barely surviving this right now. There will come a point where everyone will DEMAND a return to normal because it's going to be the ONLY way we all survive. Vaccine or not, the virus will be something we contend with for a good long time if not forever. The world cannot stay shuttered and locked down forever though, humans are resilient and our immune systems will learn to adapt to this virus over time.

For the good of our lives, our livelihoods, our economy, our culture, our way of life and our children's futures everyone needs to hope and pray all of this becomes a distant memory soon and we return to a normal, functioning way of life. None of what we're doing right now is sustainable for the long term and there will come a point where it will become increasingly harder to get people to stay in line with all of these restrictions on their lives.

People need to start demanding we go back to normal. I can't see how people are willingly accepting this still, 6 months later just to "flatten the curve".

Lawsuits are being brought against the states at this point by business owners. (Gyms, restaurant owners etc). It seems that gets some action in terms of all of a sudden it's now "safe" for these businesses to start opening up when it wasn't before a class action lawsuit was slapped on the state.
I read an article this morning (can't find it now, it was somewhere on Facebook) that said a judge ruled that some shutdown orders in PA were unconstitutional.
So it's happening, but it's taking time and that's the problem

I am in agreement with most on this thread that I am at the point where I feel we need to slowly start getting back to normal, with mask wearing and social distancing, but indoor dining, normal school, etc. Unfortunately, just because people want it and are unwilling to live like this much longer, that does not make it so.
Carle Place school district announced today the school year will start remotely "until further notice" because 30 cases among students at the high school have been reported. Last weekend there was a party, and it spread. So, people can stop complying all they want, but the government is going to do what it's going to do anyway. As much as I do not want to believe it, I see many districts on LI not lasting more than 3-4 weeks, before clusters of cases force a switch back to remote. I can only hope it would only be for two weeks, and not months like last time.

i hear the following schools shut down, syosset, farming-dale, plainedge, east meadow and smithtown

One middle school in Syosset shut down on Monday for cleaning after 1 positive case in a staff member. The whole district is not shut down and I believe that school is reopened now

I have no idea, look it up. My friend works in the Syosset district so that's how I know about that one. I don't have knowledge of every district on Long Island. Go Google it if you need to know

One middle school in Massapequa just closed down for cleaning after a staff member tested positive.

At least it’s only a one day shutdown. Still sucks for those who have to figure out child care. Being a working parent these days has to be an absolute nightmare. I feel for you all

When will we go back to

People not following mask rules and social distancing is the reason why this will not end quicker. I know people in the NE are doing a good job, but the rest of the country isn't which is what is causing issues. Other countries have been able to get back to a more normal state because they have been able to suppress the number of cases they have. The US as a whole has not.

I know many will not get a vaccine. I am not really sure why as they are running standard clinical trials. I follow many epidemiologists and infectious disease experts and I value what they say. One in particular said she would not take a vaccine that she did not feel was safe and she would not have her 2 young children take it either.

Even if people do not get the vaccine, there are currently 3 treatments that appear to reduce the length of hospitalizations. Treatments in conjunction with a vaccine will be what lets us get back to normal.

This will not last forever. Have the last 6 months sucked? Yes. Do I like wearing a mask all day while teaching half my students through a computer and half my students in person? No. Things will get back to normal. It might take a while, but they will.

Masks, social distancing, and hand washing work - keep it up everyone :)

This doesn't talk about closings but this is the NYS school report card so you can look up if there are any cases in a specific district. May come in handy if cases start to spread.

I am amazed at how schools are completely closing based on one positive case. Kids are going to school in full hazmat gear and yet still we assume one positive means automatic death for all. Mind boggling.

In most cases they are not closing. A few are closing one day for cleaning, South Huntington is closing their primary school for 10 days bc the staff member that tested positive had contact with every student. They are supposed to make the decision with the dept of health on a case by case basis.

But are they? I heard mostly they will close for a day for cleaning and contact tracing and maybe anyone in contact with that positive case will have to quarantine or they will close for 2 weeks or so if they feel too many people were exposed, but not closing for the rest of the year or anything like that.

Yes - there have been reports of Covid cases but they haven't shut down. In Plainedge, 40 students were ordered to quarantine after playing football this weekend with a student who tested positive.

Yeah, and Smithtown isn't closed at all. They had one 'confirmed' case that was later a 'false positive/mistake'. They never shut down regardless. Also I thought Syosset was just for cleaning or certain classrooms and not the entire district.

That's correct. Syosset was a staff member at one middle school and they were closed on Monday for cleaning

Why do they have to shut down to clean if we're already wearing masks, social distancing and supposedly cleaning throughout the day? I thought we're doing all of this and acting like everyone has COVID so that if they do it won't spread.

Schools by me are closing due to staff being potentially exposed. If you have too many teachers required to quarantine, you can’t have in person classes since there are not enough subs.

Did anybody see dumb Cuomo do a press conference about Covid and reopening from a moving boat on Long Island? Rather important conference and the stream kept cutting out. Idiots. Who decides to do this stuff?
