Bacteria is everywhere and can transfer from one place to another so I wouldn’t be surprised if ur friend’s mask caused her to have legionnaires. Think of the many times we touch those masks, think of all the kinds of surfaces, of all the places we leave those masks. Why would it be hard to think the legionella bacteria would end up on a mask?? Add to that the warm moist of our breath...that’s a recipe for disaster.

Thank you. Didn’t think I had to explain it in detail, I thought saying my friend who was hospitalized and her doctor told her the mask was part of the problem would be enough to just gives a heads up to people.

It really is gross when you think about it.
They do skeeve me....

I wash my fabric masks depending on how long I wear them. If I wear them more than an hour in one setting, in the wash it goes.

I did just purchase mask holders for my car, my purse and my kids' backpacks for school since they are required to keep extras on them just in case.

You don’t get legionnaires disease from wearing a mask. It’s from water. Your friend most likely read that on FB and repeated it to you. It is false.

I wear my mask once and wash it. The only exception is when I wear it to the pool. You literally need to wear it to enter the gate and then you can take it off unless you need to run into the bathroom quick.

My friend actually had legionnaires. They are seeing an uptick in it. Masks might not CAUSE it but they can contribute to it. This is coming from what her doctor who actually treated her in a hospital said to her.

Legionnaires is due to the fact that many places were not open so the water in the pipes was not circulating like usual. It is not related to wearing a mask.

I do have my son wash his face when he wears the mask for long periods of time, such as camp.

Is this a friend you know personally and see in often in person? Or just a Facebook friend? I am not accusing you of lying, but this post reminds me of the one that was recently posted here. The one about someone's friend's brother's sister's uncle's cousin's boyfriend's best friend who is the most honest person in the world, who went for a CoVid test in Florida (I think?) and saw there was a long line and decided to leave. He then says he got a letter in the mail saying he was positive and this obviously means all of this is hype and a Democractic hoax.
The poster here said it was legit and the person wasn't lying, but the post was word-for-word the same BS that had been circulating on Facebook as fake. The same thing you posted about your friend is also now circulating on Facebook and is false. Google "legionnaires mask Facebook." Various medical professionals will state this is false. There is also a post circulating about a woman who apparently caught it from her mask and almost died and OMG! what if spikes in CoVid are from...MASKS?? So again, I'm not calling you a liar. If your friend is actually ill, I hope she is better. But I am completely wary of all of this. Everyone needs to do their due diligence in the age of purposeful misinformation.

I can’t believe I have to defend myself over this post. It’s my real life friend.

Sorry for just giving a heads up as all your children head to school and are going to be sitting in masks all day in hot classrooms. I’ll just keep it to myself next time. I hope I am wrong and don’t see someone on here post that their child or themselves or a loved one had this happen to them. I was simply restating what happened to my friend, who is young and healthy and lives locally.

Supposedly you can't get it from the mask. Perhaps she got it from some other place. (I googled Legionnaires from wearing a mask and numerous results came up saying you can't) It still is a good reminder about the hygiene of facemasks. When I wear mine to a store, I have it on maybe 30 min so I do reuse it multiple times. https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-legionnaires/fact-check-you-cant-catch-legionnaires-disease-by-wearing-a-face-mask-idUSKCN25128Y

I’m just going by what she told me. Maybe she didn’t get it from the mask but the mask made it worse? They did say hanging your dirty mask on your mirror is one of the worst things because it just bakes in the sun. Another thing I do and no longer will do. Also, Just throwing them in your pocket or pocketbooks is terrible.

Even if it doesn’t directly cause it, I just want to remind people not to slack on reusing and cleaning masks like I have been!

Yikes I throw mine in my purse. But what are you supposed to do if say you go to a store, take it off when you get in your car, then later go into another store? Where are you supposed to be storing your mask between uses in the same trip?

Bring a ziplock bag and put it in there in between uses.

I've seen "experts" on FB saying NOT to use a ziploc. I believe they said a paper bag is better.

I also read that keeping it in a ziplock is not good b/c it breeds bacteria when it gets hot in the baggie.

At this rate, I'll just keep tossing it in my purse. I don't have a hermetically sealed bag to keep it in! Chat Icon
I swear ,we should all be dead by now at this rate!

I throw mine into the bottom of my purse that I haven't cleaned out in 4 months, I sometimes reuse disposable masks, and I do not wash my cloth masks nearly as frequently as I should. If all of that hasn't made me sick by now, covid doesn't stand a chance.

Chat Icon Are we long lost sisters? Because pretty much the same here, word for word.
And forget my DH. He was wearing the same mask for a month and i was like, um, do you want me to wash that, I'm washing mine...
Chat Icon

same, except my husband is better than me because he leaves the house for work. I just dumped a bunch of them in the wash and the setting was on cold. I don't usually have a purse so it goes in my pocket.

I use the T-shirt material masks and my DH says they look like rolled up socks around the house. I know this is horrible but the other day I caught myself cleaning my sunglasses with it. Im the worse.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
OMG girl, you think that is bad, the other day I was driving home and noticed some smudge on the interior of my car and I'm anal about my car, and the rag I keep in my console for that purpose was not there because i had thrown it in the laundry. So guess what I used to buff the mark out of the dash?? Yep!
Chat Icon
In my defense I tried to use the outside part, not the inside part that goes against my nose and mouth! Chat Icon Chat Icon
And I was planning to wash it when I got home, but then realized I needed to stop somewhere so I did wear it again before that.

I always use cold to wash them because i don't want them shrinking, they are tight enough. I believe the detergent and water of any kind is enough to kill anything. I don't think this virus is that resistant to soap and water of any temp to be honest.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I love this. When I see other people talking about how meticulous they are about cleaning and caring for their masks I feel like the grossest person ever...which I probably am, but at least I'm not alone! Chat Icon

I bought alligator clip chains and hook it on the mask and wear it around my neck. Especially for the kids.

This seems like a great idea but the reality is all the germs that you should not touch on the front of you mask then transfer to your shirt then when you take your shirt off over your head you rub them on your face.

I don’t think people are attacking you- the point is masks do not cause the disease it is caused by legionella bacteria. Can they exacerbate the disease apparently that is what happened to your friend. Health care workers and hospital employees have been reusing masks for months and we haven’t had an uptick in any illnesses due to reusing masks despite many of us thinking it is repulsive.
Washing your reusable mask is important!

This is what the hospital system I work for is recommending as long as the mask is not wet which then means it should be discarded.

Yes. Every time I start to think masks are uncomfortable, I think of heroes like you that have been donning them, properly, to help others since this began. It reminds me to appreciate and listen to folks just like you, who have correct information and state of the art guidance for the rest of us!

I hand wash my Masks so gently but I always find the wire gets mangled somehow. I even hang them in the kitchen to dry But the wire still gets mangled

Anyone else have this issue?

I only use surgical for myself and kids and toss after each use. Probably wasting money but we don’t go many places and I wear surgical masks in the hospital so I’m used to wearing them; cotton will hold bacteria if not washed regularly

The surgical masks hang off my kid's faces so it seems to defeat the purpose of wearing them. Do they make smaller sizes for kids?

Yes. The wire gets pretty ruined after a few washes. The one I’m wearing right now is stabbing me in the nose lol
But it’s my favorite one. Considering trying to rewire it myself

I had no idea! That's good to know. It would be nice to have some disposable options laying around for the kids.

But I thought Legionaires came from contaminated mist from HVAC type systems?
So.how does tossing a mask in your purse cause that?
I can see other dirt and germs getting on it that way of course. But Legionaires?

Sounds ridiculous to me...
