Social Distancing Question
Yes. Most places I've been have signs stating you need to wear a mask when not social distancing, even outside. When I'm at a park or walking through town, I wear it when people are nearby.

If I am less than 6 feet the mask is on. So if I'm outside walking somewhere and people are not social distanced the mask is on. Just like going to the beach. Walking to our spot the masks are on. Sitting on our blanket 6 feet away from people they are off. In the water and walking to the water we stay away from people as much as possible.
I believe the guideline of being closer than 6 feet for more than 10 minutes to contract Covid is with masks on, not with mask off.
Yes, this is correct. What Nell posted is misinformation as far as I understand. I never heard of a ten minute rule to catch covid not wearing a mask. That seems illogical.
The rule in NYS is:
Any person who is over age two and able to medically tolerate a face-covering shall be required to cover their nose and mouth with a mask or face-covering when in a public place and unable to maintain, or when not maintaining, social distance.
Being in public is being outside of your home. This applies to the outdoors. So
in the OP’s scenario, I wear a mask.

I do. I usually keep it as the 'chin strap' and then pull it up when I am closer to people.
I work downtown and most people do wear them outside

Nope. If i am out just walking in the neighborhood, i'm not gonna freak out and put my mask on in a panic just cause one person is passing me down the block. Sorry but King Cuomo was just out walking his dog this week and not wearing one at all. I only use it in heavily public places like the stores and i still think its a bunch of BS but i'll comply.

Social Distancing Question
I bring one with me when I go out for walks, but do not wear it unless I am in a crowded area. Typically we walk on the streets around my neighborhood which are very quiet, it is easy to cross the street if you see someone coming.
I was at Target this morning and most people rip the masks off the second they step out of the door into the parking lot. I leave mine on until I get in my car- but, my point is, MOST people are definitely not nearly as cautious as they were back in March & April. So, I have learned that I will do what I feel I need to do, and I will make sure my children do what I feel they need to do, but I refuse to panic and worry about other's choices anymore.
At some point, whether we like it or not, life will have to go on. And when it does, if I feel like I still want to wear my mask more often than others, I will. If I were that worried about someone passing me on the street, maskless, I would never leave my house. Because it is not a law to wear a mask when you are out walking and may possibly walk by someone for 3 seconds. So, as long as you are following guidelines, you do you, I will do me.

I don't bother. You're not going to contract COVID in the 1/8 of a second it takes to pass someone. Unless I'm near people for any length of time, I don't wear a mask outdoors.
I will never wear a mask when I'm out hiking or walking, I'm outside for the fresh air and it's easy to social distance in those situations anyway.

I don't know lol. Everything changes by the minute. I was under the impression that the guidance of being less than 6 ft for more that 10 minutes being a "close contact" was with a mask also, not not having a mask on. I am all confused. All I know is that personally I try to have my mask on if I am not social distancing even walking outside. I'm not going to throw a hissy fit if I see someone not wearing one (outside at least lol) and I wont douse myself in sanitizer either thinking I was infected. I just need a beach vacation, no masks or people : ).

These CDC guidelines are for contact tracing purposes. Obviously, there are various degrees of risk. I stand by my assertion that you posted misleading information as far as *public heath policy* is concerned.
We should all follow the NYS public health mandate which is very clear: Any person who is over age two and able to medically tolerate a face-covering shall be required to cover their nose and mouth with a mask or face-covering when in a public place and unable to maintain, or when not maintaining, social distance.
Being in public is defined as being any place outside of your home- indoors or outdoors.
A person shall be considered as maintaining social distancing when keeping at least six feet distance between themselves and any other persons, other than members of such persons' household.

No I do not. I try to move as far away as possible without looking like a crazy person, and I walk quietly by. No one is transmitting or catching covid in this manner.

Masks don’t provide 100% protection, especially depending on whether people are wearing it correctly, proper fit, type of material, etc., but my understanding is that the close contact risk refers to when at least one of the people isn't wearing a mask. I wouldn’t be concerned with passing by someone quickly while outside and probably wouldn’t wear a mask in that situation.

In that scenario I usually just pull my mask up. But when I'm walking in my hood, there is so much space, not a lot of people roaming the streets, I don't bring my mask. But most of the time, the people and myself, either step to the side to make room to pass at a respectable distance just in case either of us are carrying the virus unknowingly, ya know? I don't *think* we can contract it that way so easily, that's low risk to me (i'm no expert). But knowing I'm doing what I can to the best of my abilities to help me and my fellow humans, I do it. Cuz I got mad respect for the living.

This was my thought. I just do it more out of respect for others than worried I am going to catch something. We were on a crowded sidewalk on a main road so it's not like we could have just crossed the street or moved further away.
