Social Distancing Question

If you are walking down the street and you go to pass a person and there is no way to social distance, would you put on your mask.

Re: Social Distancing Question

No. I don't really ever wear a mask outside in the open air.
From what I read you have to be in close contact with someone for 10 minutes or more to catch anything.

Close contact is defined as being within approximately 6 feet of someone who is positive for COVID-19, including those who may not yet be showing symptoms. Experts say that contact with someone positive for the virus for about 10 minutes or longer can result in transmission.

So then why would you wear one grocery shopping or shopping at all with that logic?

I wear a mask when required to by the state mandate. Stores require it, so I follow the rules.
I don't go out running with a mask on, nor hiking in the woods, nor do I wear one on the beach.

Re: Social Distancing Question

I wouldn't. It is outside, I am just passing them, not chatting. They would have to cough in the air and I would have to walk through the Corona cloud to catch anything.

Listen, I respect that there is fear of the virus. I lived in absolute fear for 3 months. But life will go on and if science tells me that I have to wear a mask in that situation then we are all doomed, so I will take my chances. If someone feels the need, then wear the mask in that situation, then you will be safe. I wear one indoors and outside when I have to, but I wouldn't for this.

No I don't. The viral load would have to be super heavy for you to get sick just passing someone on a street. If it were that easy to catch from walking by someone, a lot more of the 8 million people living in NYC would have caught it months ago.

I have put it on in places where its required when passing people. Like at Mohonk while hiking etc.

And the mask is to protect others from me, I suppose. But I'm not sick, am not coughing or sneezing and the chances of someone getting sick from someone else's carbon dioxide is pretty NIL.

And again, the cases in our County and island are so very low. I check the numbers daily. Like 50 yesterday. So its pretty safe here. Not sure where everyone on this site lives though. But, I'm talking about LI

My thing is, if they thought it was necessary in that situation, or outdoors, or on a beach, they would have mandated it. Our state is very cautious. I follow what they say.
So far, it's done very well for us, considering our infection rate.

Social Distancing Question

I take the mask off almost as soon as I leave a store. I have passed people in the parking lot while walking to my car, but there's usually room enough to walk a few feet away so I'm not within 6 feet of someone. I don't usually go walking on a crowded sidewalk, but I probably would put the mask on if I were passing someone.

I also figure that if my mask protects others, better safe than sorry. Especially because the science keeps evolving and the research keeps getting revised. 6 feet is no longer viewed as adequate for a lot of purposes any more:

If I am asymptomatic, I don't want to risk harming someone else.

The labeling in this forum is Chat Icon and then those same ppl are the ones complaining about being judged. Show respect so u can get respect back.

To the OP, I wouldn’t wear a mask in a situation like that but if someone wants to, they have the right to do it. I couldn’t care less what others want to do.

No. Most likely by the time it takes me to put my mask on, the person would have already passed.

Totally agree, you cant ask a question without being attacked.
If I am walking in the streets, I do not carry a mask. If we pass people, we stop and wait till they walk by .

I'm not trying to be snarky or argue: I have a serious question. Doesn't the content of this article--the traffic-light system as opposed to the six-foot rule, specifically--suggest that the scenario posed by the OP is, in fact, low risk even if the walkers are maskless? The chart suggests that this situation escalates to medium risk only if one of the walkers is "shouting [or] singing."

It appears, based on this document, anyway, that while the six-foot rule may sometimes be inadequate, it may, in other cases, be too extreme.

I don't think you're being snarky at all. I specifically said that right now it's starting to be viewed as inadequate for a lot of purposes. My takeaway is that we can't have absolute confidence in anything, we have reason to be less confident in hard and fast rules than we were before, things can happen/change pretty quickly when you're out among people, and IMO, my comfort in that scenario would not be worth the risk that I could pose to someone.

ETA: When you're out in public during a pandemic, I don't think there is such a thing as "too extreme" when it comes to wearing a mask when standing a certain distance from someone. It is always better safe than sorry. In my case, I am healthy, so the "sorry" would likely be what I could do to a stranger that I'd never see again.

Social Distancing Question

If I can’t socially distance, I wear a mask. When I walk, bike, or run around my neighborhood, I don’t wear a mask because I can easily move to the other side of the road and be 12 feet away from others.

I went to a small city near me and the side walks were packed. Some people were not wearing masks. On crowded city streets, I do think everyone should be wearing a mask.

Social Distancing Question

If I am less than 6 feet the mask is on. So if I'm outside walking somewhere and people are not social distanced the mask is on. Just like going to the beach. Walking to our spot the masks are on. Sitting on our blanket 6 feet away from people they are off. In the water and walking to the water we stay away from people as much as possible.

I believe the guideline of being closer than 6 feet for more than 10 minutes to contract Covid is with masks on, not with mask off.
