Stupid question about old clothes/laundry
I'm not the most versed in terms of laundry/clothes maintenance/etc.
I split my laundry into two loads: "Good" clothes (dress shirts, nice tshirts, jeans - cold water) and "who cares" (socks, underwear, everyday clothes - hot water)
Anyway I noticed this happened in the past and I've always wondered why.
I would find buried in the back of the drawer or if I stay at my parents and dig clothes from my old closet a pair of boxers but when I pull on the waistband it "cracks" and stretches out and stays stretched out.
Obviously this is due to age and the elastic dies. But does doing laundry prevent it?
I have other boxers that I wear regularly that are the same age and they dont have this happen. It only seems to happen to boxers that have sat there for a long time without touching.
Its almost like it dries out (and cracks) after X months but washing it will prevent it from drying out...?
I assume once it stretches out, thats it, can't bring it back to life?
I know weird questions.

I think from not wearing it for a time. My bathing suits do that.

I really don't know the answer to your question, but it seems to me the elastic stays "fresh" from use and dries out when not used. I don't think it's the fact of the item being washed

I think after a while the elastic just gets old & breaks down. I tend to use my stuff for years til it’s worn out & even with regular wearing & washing I’ve had it happen with underwear, socks, etc.

I just had a pair of panties that I wash and wear all the time fall right off my ass when i put them on.
So I think over time, elastic just gives out regardless.

Rubber-based elastic will inevitably dry out and crack over time due to age-related changes to the material. I don't think washing will preserve it. In fact, I think heat, like hot washing and drying in the drier will hasten the process.
