the school i teach in is in queens, bayside area. 42% so far are full remote but there's expected to be alot more. Parents can change their decisions at any time and in the last week alot more opted for full remote. The DOE is completely and totally different than LI in so many ways. DD is going to pre-k on LI in our home district and i'm very very comfortable sending her. They are doing SO much and when I've asked my principal about all the things my home school is doing, the response is always "i'm not sure" "that's a good question" "We'll have to see after we start" and many other variations of I DON'T KNOW. I'm not a big union person and at times i feel embarassed at the complaints because i prefer to just do my job, but I feel everything Mulgrew has said so far is totally warranted. What is happening in the DOE is awful. I teach in a Catholic school, also in the Bayside area, and we have gotten 40 new families from DOE schools, with more calling everyday. We are 100% ready, and have every single thing we need. I am comfortable with going back and only 9% of our families chose our remote option.
People are leaving the NYC public schools in droves, and I do not blame them.

So, we don't know our classes/students, we don't know WHAT we are teaching (in person children vs. at home children vs. full remote kids), and we don't know our start date nor what platform we have to use (google classroom is NOT being utilized in every school) NOR have we gotten training.
It's a hot mess.
And I have very little faith that the schools will be cleaned. The dust in our radiators probably dates back to the 60's. The windows don't all open. Soap is not consistent in bathrooms (including teacher bathrooms!).
Oh well...it is what it is.

i think that's so great that you're doing that. Unfortunately, in a city school i feel that will only help so much because he will probably be one of the only kids bringing that in! It's so sad.

DD goes to Catholic School in Queens and we had our Zoom meeting last night to over everything. They are doing full 5 days - masks are worn when kids are walking around (hallways. classroom), but if they are at their desk, they can pull them down. Teachers have masks on all day.
They are actually encouraging them to eat lunch outside - be outside whenever they can because they will be in one classroom all day (they usually switch rooms for different classes).
There is also a full remote learning option. If you opt for that you have to stay in for a full marking period - then can switch to 5 days in school if you want, and vice versa.
I was pretty pleased with the meeting and all the safety measures they have implemented. We'll see what happens.

Same. My employer never provided any of this stuff. I used to buy it myself. I always keep hand sanitizer on my desk- even before this wave of panic- and I always had Clorox wipes in my desk too to wipe down my area.
It's just common personal hygiene.
I don't expect my employer to provide me things to keep myself and my area clean.
Now if I was expected to wipe down all the desks in the classroom, then yes, I'd expect the school to pay for those supplies.

So sorry you are going through this. At one point during the worse of this and the hospitals had little to no PPE I was buying my own. I at one point wore a garbage bag and a hospital gown to go into a room. It’s awful. Same with cleaners I had to bring my own to wipe down my IPAD and supplies I used with my pediatric patients. I am still supplying my own masks. Sometimes you can find one easy other times not so much, but it has definitely gotten so much better with getting masks easily at work. They should absolutely be supplying stuff. I talked to my accountant and I can write it all off since I bought it for work, definitely save receipts!

Well that is just silly. I wonder if it's out of spite or that that they just don't care if they get sick from germy students touching everything and not wiping anything down. Because germy surfaces in the classroom will inevitably get the teacher sick. I would be stocking up and writing it off!

I think you are generalizing about city schools. My son's school said they WILL provide masks if a child forgets, or drops it, or whatever. They also sent out an email yesterday that they have school logo masks for sale too.
The floors shined in this school like the top of the Chrysler Building pre covid, the principal has had the custodians in the building since March cleaning and painting and getting ready. I know we are very very lucky, but I am CERTAIN we are not the only 'city school' like this.
My son's school has 90% going back in person for blended.

i'm sure it is a generalization. each school is very different. here's what i know about mine:
right now, it is being used for camp for kids of essential workers. They are in the building until sept. 9th. School starts sept. 10th. even if they clean all, night, will it get scrubbed form top to bottom?
each year teachers ask for paper towels, tissues, and disinfecting wipes, so they are not being provided, or not enough is being provided.
per my own kid, soap is missing in the bathroom 7/10 times he's in there. paper towels are missing form the bathroom 3/10 times he's in there.
our school is in a neighborhood where most people own their house, have two cars, are doing well. It has parent involvement and community help. it is not the richest, but definitely not lacking.
can't imagine what school that are not as well off are like.

I decided to put my kids in Catholic school this year. Small population, solid plan for social distancing, masks, and plexiglass partitions. I have another child with severe special needs that will be home 2 days a week in the fall, and I’m a single FT working parent. I cannot handle a repeat of spring. We loved our public school, but would only have been in 6 days a month which just wasn’t going to cut it in my situation. If I stayed home or if they were a little older it would be a different story.

It's like he's trying to make sure everyone chooses remote instead of blended classes.
I don't know of any kid who could concentrate enough to learn outside, sitting on the street, while cars pass by on side streets.

So basically waste money setting this up for two months, not even with holidays and school starting late? Am I losing my mind thinking this is the dumbest sh!t ever?

I HATE defending DiBlasio, but...in this case, in his defense, he did not think outdoor classrooms were a good idea. The principals union was pushing for it, so he gave in.
I still want to know how they plan to have outdoor classes in the winter.

Our school just finished building an expansion, which means we lost half our yard. I very much doubt that the residents on the side street will want the access to their homes blocked 5 days a week.

That's because nothing makes logical sense anymore. People push for it, but it makes no sense. But they feel satisfied that the schools are doing it.
