Abdominal pain WWYD

My daughter was fine this morning. Excited to do a fun event we had planned. She did #1and #2 potty and had cinnamon swirl toast and some blueberries for breakfast.

Soon after she was screaming and wailing in pain. Saying the right side near her belly button hurt. She is 7 1/2. I gave her ice and she kept wailing in pain. After ~20 mins told her we are going to emergency room, not doing fun event. She stood up. Said wait I’m fine. Ran across the room and played with her brother. She’s been fine all day.

This happened about ~3 times in last 2 years. No pattern we can determine. She’s dramatic but this was not faking. She is not an attention seeking kid. Actually more shy and reserved.

She says it doesn’t hurt to go potty and I’ve never seen anything in her undies.

It could be anything or nothing but hearing her scream like that shattered me. Any ideas?

Obviously if she has any other signs soon we are going to urgent care. But weird this has happened before.

If she were only cringing or grimacing I would say maybe she was just constipated or bloated. DS gets that sometimes and acts pretty dramatic and then it passes within 10-20 min.

Screaming and wailing from a child who doesn't do that often would concern me, though.

I would say call the ped but they will probably just tell you to bring her in.

Is her well visit soon? I think I would bring her to the ped. Try not to stress - if she really bounced back that quickly it was probably nothing.

You don't have to actually answer this but could there be something stressing her? Sometimes that manifests with stomach issues that ebb and flow.

Sorry you are dealing with this!

Does she have anxiety? I used to have really bad stomach aches when I was really anxious about something.

My DD went through this for a bit as well. Definitely anxiety related

My first thought is that it could be anxiety related. I have absolutely had situations where anxiety gave me terrible stomach pains, and as soon as the anxiety-inducing issue was resolved, the pain disappeared.

Could be anxiety but my first thought especially with pain on right side and at the belly button, may be appendicitis but if it lets up it’s not that. I would think more anxiety related than anything.
It is also possible that it could be food related? Gas? Maybe something bothering her stomach. I wouldn’t be too concerned if it lets up, I would think just bring it up at her next doctor apt. Keep track of what’s going on in her day when she has these episodes and what she eats.

I considered anxiety and we did have a stressful week last week with storm damage. So any other day last week I would have assumed that. But Sunday morning we knew our power was back on and we were doing the fun activity and coming back home, so the real stress was over.

The other 2 times this happened it was a regular day. So it could be, it’s just all so strange.

She was in a great mood yesterday and today. The pain is gone and she’s active and silly.

So weird!

Sometimes "coming down" from an anxiety inducing situation has me feeling just as bad as being in the moment of the anxiety. I don't have an answer for you, but just sharing my experience.

Interesting. Thank you for sharing.

I will continue to watch and I’m curious to see if this comes again when it’s back to school as I know she has some concerns (like we all do).

Re: Abdominal pain WWYD

Sounds very similar to something that happened to my 6 yr old. One minute he'd be laying down with terrible stomach pain and a little while later he would suddenly realize it doesn't hurt anymore and he'd be running around normally. He was peeing and pooping normally. I went back and forth thinking maybe he was faking, but he's really not the type. It turned out that he got gastritis from something he drank. IDK why it took me so long to figure it out, but the doctor helped me figure out what caused it.

So his stomach lining was irritated and certain foods would irritate it more and cause pain. The doctor said to give it a few weeks and avoid anything that could be irritating (like acidic foods and dairy). She had us stick to a bland 'BRAT' diet. She said if it continued or got bad again after a few weeks, sh'd recommend a GI, but he was fine after about a week and a half of the bland diet.
