Your district already got back to parents to let them know? We are wondering when we will hear as we all were asked to take a quick survey yesterday morning.
I got the same survey yesterday. I gave my strongly worded opinion. 
I was also poolside on vacation and a mimosa in at that point so yeah.....

I'm really saddened by this whole thing. They are opening schools to open the economy. More concerned about financial gains than the safety of teachers, students, and other school staff. JMO

we were asked to take the survey by the 7th. I am sure that there are some that did not get back. But we got an email late yesterday that said "As stated in our Reopening Plan on Page 36, the intention is to open in person unless the metrics change, and the Governor directs us otherwise. " That sound to me like they plan on full open. I really think hybrid is better to start to see how it goes
Interesting. I wonder when these schools will have their final plans to all of us.

I didn’t go too deep into it but yes, many of my friends did. All indicating full day for all grades.

No they are opening schools because our numbers are low enough and it is time.
Teachers, students and other staff have been with other people for months so there will be no difference in what has been going on. No one is hiding out in their homes anymore. If people want to, let them. The rest of us know our kids need some more normalcy and how about we think of the children who are being abused, starving and killing themselves during this time. Everyone seems to forget that not every child lives in a happy home with a perfect family that others all try and portray on social media.

I get all your points, but i'm also seeing nationwide that schools are returning for no longer than a month and then going full remote because of spikes. Being concerned about the families who aren't stable is still selfish IMO. Opening schools for the benefit of those individuals just results in more deaths in the community... There is no right decision here, but just flat out ignoring what is going on everywhere else is ignorant. I have friends in GA and MD who are all full remote now because they opened and it spiked.
From a teaching standpoint, it's so much worse to have your kids start school, get on a routine, and then get pulled out a month later and go through all the chaos of trying to scramble a remote learning plan together again. Students thrive on routine. In-class routines will be set that can't possibly continue when we go remote, then kids get anxious about the all the changes. Easier to just start off remote and get routines in place remotely. It's a given that the kids are gonna end up going remote, it's gonna spike and it's gonna be chaos all over again.

You can’t compare what is happening in other states in schools to what might happen here. The rates of infection and death vary greatly by state and many states do not have infection rates under control.
Parents are given a full remote option in most districts so if parents don’t feel like their child should be in a classroom they can stay home. And yes there will be infections but staying home was just to control not stop infections.

I have a nurse, doctor and two PAs in my family. They are all glad with the decision to return to school for NY. It may not be the best option for other states but at the present, NY is doing a lot better than others. I am thrilled to have my daughter back to school. If parents are uncomfortable with the idea, then stay home. But keep in mind that its a commitment that you will take on. Don't think you can plop your kid in front of a computer and go along with with your day. Its up to you to make sure they are gaining anything from online schooling especially elementary aged children.

Our district has had a committee formed since March when this all started. It sent out a survey to the parents in the beginning of July. After DOH, CDC and the governor released the reopening guidelines in mid-July the district worked on a plan to meet (or exceed) the guidelines. That included measuring every classroom in every building to determine how many kids could occupy the space and still be six feet apart. Changing the filters in the heating/ac systems to meet the ratings specified for large spaces etc etc.
Everyone was given a choice between in person/hybrid (depending on the grade) and full remote learning because the district determined it could not meet the social distancing guidelines for certain grades if all the kids were in the buildings every day. Our district's plan has been approved by DOH & DOE to the best of my knowledge. Every family is required to make the choice by a certain date so the scheduling etc can be done.

Yep! I'm away on vacation right now and I can tell you it's business as usual. If people are still hiding at home, you'd never know it here. The beach is packed. The restaurants are booked up a month in advance, shops are open, all hotels seem full.
People are being cautious, I see masks on everyone where necessary and the hotels and restaurants I have been at are doing a good job of sanitizing and distancing. But life has gone on it seems. It feels more crowded than even last summer here to be honest.
The fact is, people realize we need to learn to live with this. So things are different, but people are still out enjoying life with the necessary precautions.
Same needs to go for school. Which in my opinion is extremely essential. Way more so than vacations, restaurants and shops. All of which are open.

I don’t know many who are just staying home anymore. Restaurants are packed and stores are busy as usual. Kids are playing with others, playing sports. People are having bbqs and parties.
Makes no sense as our numbers are low with al this extra happening.
People will get sick as they usually do. Our kids can’t stay home forever because someone might get sick.

yeah i guess you're all right- i just worst case alot and it's hard not to get anxious about all the what ifs.. i'm really worried about being in a school 5 days a week. All the students in my building will be on a hybrid A/B schedule, but I'm there every day. The precautions are in place for the kids, but the teachers don't really feel safe. Kids are staying in one room all day to protect them, yet we are moving all around the building... Alot of teachers are nervous about this

Did you see that Cuomo said every district must hold at least one meeting with teachers and staff to go over plans and ask questions? Not saying that will solve everything but at least it makes them include them in the conversation. DH's district has given next to no information to teachers and it's mind boggling.

I get it, but Ithink about all the workers who have been working throughout this. Even during the height. Grocery store workers, etc. Dealing with 100s of people a day.
I think of the maids cleaning my room this week on vacation. Coming into the room I've been sleeping in and breathing in all night. Cleaning my bathroom. The waiters. The shop clerks.
They are all out here doing it. They have masks and whatever PPE deemed necessary. But they are working and have been. And they aren't nearly as essential as the teachers.

Exactly and how any have gotten sick? None or very little.
Ask these same teachers if they have gone on vacation or spent time with others during all of this.

Exactly. School is essential just like shopping in Target, Walmart and grocery stores were at the height of this. Precautions are in place, it's the best that can be done.
And let's remember that it's been said on here and from someone who works in my school, that not one child or teacher who was in the schools with Scope for essential care since March, ended up sick.

You have every right to be nervous. Teachers and students are being used as test subjects. I hope your school is implementing a plan that will keep YOU and your students safe.
My son’s school seems to have a good plan for elementary, but I am nervous for the MS/HS staff and students.
I teach HS and I am very nervous about going back. My school has not released any information about what the “hybrid” model will look like. I know each group of students will be in school 2 days a week. We are on a block schedule so that means I am making contact with each student ONE time per week. All this stress for one in person session. I plan on telling my students to bring a blanket because class will be outside every day that weather permits.
Also people keep saying if you don’t like it quit. Well if every teacher who doesn’t like it quits, you probably won’t have enough teachers to actually teach.
And every teacher I am friends with has still been following guidelines. They are not going to parties or having play dates. No vacations. Maybe because I teach science so all my friends believe this virus is serious. That doesn’t mean that they haven’t seen their family at all or been out of the house. It just means they are keeping their bubble small.

Everyone else is back to work. Schools are actually able to follow guidelines better than many other places.
I can’t stand teachers saying they didn’t sign up for this. Do you think the people in public transit signed up for this? They have it a hundred times worse, small tiny confined spaces with hundreds of different people every day.
Did store employees sign up for this? (Especially to make minimum wage?) the list could go on.
The schools should not be closed. There is no reason. They are going above and beyond with precautions compared to other sectors.

Well teachers who don't want to do their job and won't go back, what makes them think they are any different or any better than the thousands of people who have returned to work (which, in essence, helps pay their salaries) without ANY of the fanfare and near hysteria. You know, the grocery store workers, the gas station attendants, the people who have been keeping the world functioniong (even if barely) why teachers get the trade-off of summers off, holidays, etc. You get all that because OTHER people work for it around the year. And that's just reality - it's a collective society that works together to improve and move forward, not to cower and act like working parents are sending you to your grave. My patience is running thin from the teacher hysteria.

I am a teacher and I am starting to get really annoyed with the martyr syndrome being displayed by teachers. EVERYONE else has gone back to work. And please do not give me the "but we are with all these kids and don't have proper ppe."
My school will be supplying masks, but I will buy my own if I don't find it sufficient. You can make sure you have proper PPE. The nyc teachers union is saying no school until 14 days of no new cases. That is NEVER happening. So stop it. Doctors stood over covid patients putting tubes down their throats, turning them, basically on top of them, and most never got sick. What about the day care employees? Nobody ever thinks about them and all the kids and parents they are exposed to on a daily basis...and nobody ever got sick. Our numbers are low right now. Kids have to go back to school. As a teacher, I am nervous. I am scared. But this is my job and I have to do it. I am no more special than the man who has been working at stop and shop. Teachers want to be considered essential, but only if they get to stay safe at home?
I worry parents are going to really start to resent teachers, even though so many of us are not like that.

Not that I resent teachers personally, but again, I'm trying to be sympathetic and empathetic but I also thought we were trying to make it as safe/flatten the curve to be able to go back to school which we've done. but I get what you're saying. And I do see some people going down that path sadly.

I’m going back to work and I haven’t complained about it. I’m sending my son back to school too. I am just saying it’s okay to be nervous about returning especially if you have been diligent about social distancing. The unknown is scary.
Everyone in my family is essential. My brothers are NYPD, my sister is a nurse and my parents work in grocery. All of them were nervous too. My mom and dad took off 6-8 weeks in the beginning. There actually was hysteria in grocery stores initially. Maybe it didn’t make the news, but their unions were fighting for them as well.

yeah i guess you're all right- i just worst case alot and it's hard not to get anxious about all the what ifs.. i'm really worried about being in a school 5 days a week. All the students in my building will be on a hybrid A/B schedule, but I'm there every day. The precautions are in place for the kids, but the teachers don't really feel safe. Kids are staying in one room all day to protect them, yet we are moving all around the building... Alot of teachers are nervous about this
You have every right to be nervous. Teachers and students are being used as test subjects. I hope your school is implementing a plan that will keep YOU and your students safe.
My son’s school seems to have a good plan for elementary, but I am nervous for the MS/HS staff and students.
I teach HS and I am very nervous about going back. My school has not released any information about what the “hybrid” model will look like. I know each group of students will be in school 2 days a week. We are on a block schedule so that means I am making contact with each student ONE time per week. All this stress for one in person session. I plan on telling my students to bring a blanket because class will be outside every day that weather permits.
Also people keep saying if you don’t like it quit. Well if every teacher who doesn’t like it quits, you probably won’t have enough teachers to actually teach.
And every teacher I am friends with has still been following guidelines. They are not going to parties or having play dates. No vacations. Maybe because I teach science so all my friends believe this virus is serious. That doesn’t mean that they haven’t seen their family at all or been out of the house. It just means they are keeping their bubble small.
Well teachers who don't want to do their job and won't go back, what makes them think they are any different or any better than the thousands of people who have returned to work (which, in essence, helps pay their salaries) without ANY of the fanfare and near hysteria. You know, the grocery store workers, the gas station attendants, the people who have been keeping the world functioniong (even if barely) why teachers get the trade-off of summers off, holidays, etc. You get all that because OTHER people work for it around the year. And that's just reality - it's a collective society that works together to improve and move forward, not to cower and act like working parents are sending you to your grave. My patience is running thin from the teacher hysteria.

The unknown is scary for the parents sending their kids back that teachers are going to be professional and teach after the horrific year we've had. Because a lot of what we see even here on this website is that teachers are martyring themselves, not going to go near students, and will barely provide an education. Like they're doing it to be spiteful.

Literally one person said she wouldn't go near students. However, they're generally not supposed to whenever possible according to state and cdc guidance. No one says they're not going to provide an education or address the academic of social emotional needs of their students. It's okay if that want that to happen in a safe manner though.
