Thinking about posting math tutoring (in person or on zoom) on my local neighborhood FB pages. How do these rates sound to you (be honest please! I want to be reasonable)

- Individual Tutoring: $70/hr
- Group Tutoring: $45/pp up to 5 people in a group

Will be willing to meet at the local library with everyone wearing masks, or will do virtual Zoom sessions.

Grades 6-9 if that matters

My 6 year old sees a tutor in a group of 4 kids 2x a week for reading through a tutoring company. I pay $20 a session. It is run by a certified teacher.

Edit: Session is 45 minutes long.

I don’t anymore, but when I tutored for the SAT, I received $100/hour. I would do 2-3 kids in a small group for the same price, as it really wasn’t any more work on my part.

For general tutoring, I would say $80/hour is fine, up to four kids if they want to split the price.

Okay so you think I should keep the individual rate and lower the group rate maybe?

IMO $70 is a lot. I never paid more than $60 for an individual session. Each session is 45 mins by cert teacher.

I think $70 is fair! But I hate to say it depends where on the Island. Ugh, I don't like that this is true but it is. My brother gets $90 in certain areas while $70 elsewhere

My friend has tutored my hs aged sons In math. She charges me $60/hour as a friend. She charges $80-$100 depending on the class normally.

I pay $60 per hour (private) for a certified teacher. I know it's only $10 more but I wouldn't do it for $70 and definitely not via zoom.

$70 is very reasonable for private. But I think your group rate is too high if your going to allow 5 kids. I think you need to lower the group rate or keep it the same and only have a group of 3

Just FYI, some libraries do not allow tutoring and those that used to pre-pandemic probably aren't allowing it any more. The one that I work at isn't due to extremely reduced seating capacity & the need to keep people moving in and out of the building, so you may want to check with your library first to make sure that it won't be a problem.

$70 an hour for a tutor???!!! really. that is the going rate??!!

I would honestly never pay that for an Elementary student at all, not even sure for middle school. maybe high school but even then my kid better have exhausted every avenue possible before I would get them a tutor at the price!!

ETA: and is this off the books also?

I think it’s going to depend on the area you are marketing in. Some people I know in wealthy areas will pay $100+ for tutoring whereas many areas $50-$60 is more affordable if that. I think like others said it will depend on location, age range etc. I also don’t think libraries will allow groups at this point in time so you may have to tutor at a house in groups.

that's exactly what I did- Changed to $50 each for groups of 2, and $40 each for groups of 3. Going rate around here is 90-100/hr

ETA: I have 4 families already confirmed. One private, and the other 3 are groups of three!

Mine allows tutoring I've done it before. Not sure about now, but they did before

That’s great! It’s a reasonable price for them and you’re charging enough to make it worth your time.

My library used to allow it too, but they are not anymore. Most are not now.

Yep - that's exactly what I meant. Pre-pandemic we were one of the ones that used to welcome tutors, but we no longer do. I'd hate for you to show up at the library with a client only to be told to leave because it violates their new public use rules...just best to call first to be sure. Chat Icon

Re: opinion- tutoring rate

My son is being tutored right now for the specialized high school (SHSAT) for NYC, it's a group session, virtual and it is $50 for an hour and 15 minutes.

It's not via zoom but another program, he has homework and it was my understanding all tutoring should really be virtual these days. I pay by zelle, it's super easy

I agree it depends on the area and the qualifications. I had my son with a teacher w/ 10 years experience (special ed and reading certified)last year and paid $50 for 45 mins.
Now I have him with a teacher who is trained in orton gillingham and other techniques. She has over 30 years experience. I pay her $90 an hour.
It all depends

Yes - our library is open but, you can only pick up/drop off. Patrons aren't allowed into the library itself - just to a window.
