Flu Season
I keep hearing how we need to be afraid of flu season with covid. But my question is, if we are disinfecting and wearing masks wouldn’t flu season not be as bad? Isn’t flu not as contagious? Just a random thought while watching tv this morning that got me wondering. Not looking to debate, just curious.

Flu Season
Disinfecting and masks should help reduce the number of cases of the flu- the fear is that the Covid-19 virus will surge during the same period as the flu- this is based on predictions that like the flu the virus will become more prevalent from November-May. As we know not everyone is following the recommendations of social distancing and masks- additionally wearing a fabric mask does not provide 100% reduction in virus transmission it helps to reduce transmission

I agree that flu season should not be so bad. I think the health experts are really trying to get everyone on board to mask and distance- and especially get a flu shot, so as not to overwhelm the system when Covid cases spike.

Flu Season
My fear is when/if my kids or myself get sick this winter, we won't know what it is right away. Is it a cold, flu, covid? It's going to cause me a lot of anxiety not knowing.

Are covid tests still free? My pediatrician is going to have rapid tests soon and I just know they will be routinely testing for flu strep and covid now when you come in with a fever and what not. I have high deductible insurance and pay $300 out of my pocket for a sick visit with a flu test already. Ughhh. And my school is requiring a negative covid result now if you were in contact with a covid positive person. Fingers crossed they remain free

I thought you had to quarantine for 14 days if you were in contact with a Covid positive person. Did that change? Does your school require the test AND the 14 day quarantine?
They really need to get a less invasive test if they're going to be forcing these on people. I wouldn't be at all excited to get the test and my kids would freak. I'm aware that it's not common but I know someone who was injured by the test and had bleeding that wouldn't stop for over two weeks and required two doctor visits and a trip to the ER. Cost $3k out of pocket in total and apparently you can't sue the place that administered due to some special laws that protect the testers.

My FIL had to get a test before he was allowed to return to work and they billed his insurance

For summer school, they are not quarantining entire classes for 2 weeks. They are saying minimal risk of spread due to social distancing. I believe the same procedure will occur in September. I would think if multiple people in a setting test positive, different procedures would apply.

That makes sense if they're wearing masks and social distancing. I thought she meant a true exposure of face to face contact for 10-15 minutes or more, which I would assume happened out of school.

One thing they are doing that I LOVE...if your child is sent home sick or with a fever they can not return until the nurse has reviewed a letter from their doctor stating they can go back, And/or if they were diagnosed with something other than covid. I would think ALL illnesses are going to be lessened now if people keep washing their hands and being sanitary. Strep, Flu, Norovirus (stomach virus), common colds. All that stuff is rampant EVERY single year. And those that say Covid is spread easier than anything, I don't buy it. How many people end up with a cold 2 weeks into school? I would say at least half the school population. Illness, no matter what it is, is spread easily when people aren't washing their hands, not covering their nose and mouth, etc.

I think the concern is people getting both flu and Covid at the same time and the hospitals being full of covid patients, they won’t have as much space for flu patients or vice versa.
If you get the flu, your immune system is compromised and it’s much easier to get Covid - works the other way around too.

I had the COVID test done at the beginning of the month before my surgery, both the rapid and the regular one, and both were free. They take your insurance information but no charge.
