I really don't understand what politics has to do with feeling comfortable about having your child in school or not.
I know I know it’s not everyone, but I find most people that I talk to that find the virus is fake, overblown, a political tool, etc etc are typically more right-leaning.
So if they have those opinions they are more likely to before fully on board with a 100% return to school.
And again. I know it’s not everyone.

I know exactly what you are saying. I guess from the start I was just confused as to how a virus can be made into something political. And how it was so polarizing down party lines.

100000%. Yes, there are exceptions of course, but this is how it has been.
It didn't have to be political but when the President called it a Democratic hoax there wasn't really any other way for it to go.

I'm sure they're coming up with options, but things are going to be chaotic for a while....

I dont know how its possible either. And even the a and b day schedule, who is teaching the kids those 3 days a week they are home? Our school did an awful job with distance learning already. Spanish instruction needs a teacher. Not YouTube videos like mine was directed to(not made by the teacher) I dont get how it will work. Seems ambitious
It is possible they are setting up live webcam for remote instruction? That is what my sons school is planning. So the teacher is teaching both in person and streaming live for remote students.
UFT won't allow live streaming of NYC teachers. If you choose remote learning, a random teacher who opted out of teaching in person will teach the remote learning. Could be from any district,borough, or subject specialty. So you could potentially have a gym teacher teaching 5th grade science. Once I heard that, remote teaching was out for us.

I am upset with my districts's plan. What is the difference if they go 2 x a week vs. full time? I am a teacher as well, and the kids are going 2 x a week in person, Wednesday only staff go in and the rest of the week is remote learning. My one son has Autism, so they are working on getting approval for the self- contained kids to go all week. My point is now I have to scramble getting someone to watch my boys (one is going into high school) so I dont feel comfortable him watching his brother, and now exposing other people because of childcare. So if my inaws or my dad or neighbor.

People in NY listen to others and run with incorrect things. No decisions have been made so you can’t say my district is doing this or that yet.

Wow, this is so messed up. On one hand it’s good that the remote and hybrid learning doesn’t fall on just one teachers shoulders for a class but on the other hand the plan doesn’t seem adequate for full remote students.
I feel like we are going to see the horrible effects of these half assed education plans in the future and by then it will be too late.

You couldn't have a PE teacher teach a 5th grade class if the PE teacher is not certified in elementary education. The state has always allowed teachers to teach 5 hours per week out of their certification area. They bumped it up to 10 hours this year, but that still would not allow a gym teacher to be the main teacher for a 5th grade class.

A lot has to do with FERPA
One of my coworkers got in trouble for providing the student's school sports coach with the parent's phone number. The coach did not have access to this information as they were not a teacher. My school takes FERPA and Ed 2D Law very seriously.

In NYC Schools, we have been given the option to do remote learning 100%. We've been notified we need to make that decision by 8/7.

Right, that is absolutely not true that PE teacher would be assign to teach a 5th grade class if they aren't certified to. I'm wondering where the poster got that info?

In NYC Schools, we have been given the option to do remote learning 100%. We've been notified we need to make that decision by 8/7.
Even without Coumo approving that as I thought it was the entire state that he would tell by 8/7 his plans?

I know there haven't been decisions made yet but, I can't see the plans improving more than they are - only getting worse.
I still feel that we will be 100% remote. He said in his radio interview the other day that parents and teachers need to be comfortable with the plans and it's obvious, not all parents and teachers are comfortable with going back.
And most plans have teachers going in 5x a week and their kids most likely won't be going in full time so it's a hardship for them. I've spoken to many teachers who are ok with going back but are going to take a leave because of childcare needs.
And a lot of these hybrid plans are a logistical nightmare.

I think part of it is the disruption that can come from having students in the classroom and also participating at home.
My husband is a middle school teacher and I watched him teach a few lessons via GOOGLE classroom and it was very tough to keep the kids focused. He had kids sign in and then scream something and then sign out. He had one kid that played music through a lesson. I would think it would be difficult for a teacher to deal with that as well as the students in a classroom.

I was confused by the posts here saying, our district is opening in person, every day, etc. because I thought they couldn't say that definitively until the state said so. So pretty much everyone should have 3 plans right now
People in NY listen to others and run with incorrect things. No decisions have been made so you can’t say my district is doing this or that yet.
Funny as I have heard people think they can pick and choose too. I know in other states they are allowing this but not here in NY.
I know there haven't been decisions made yet but, I can't see the plans improving more than they are - only getting worse.
I still feel that we will be 100% remote. He said in his radio interview the other day that parents and teachers need to be comfortable with the plans and it's obvious, not all parents and teachers are comfortable with going back.
And most plans have teachers going in 5x a week and their kids most likely won't be going in full time so it's a hardship for them. I've spoken to many teachers who are ok with going back but are going to take a leave because of childcare needs.
And a lot of these hybrid plans are a logistical nightmare.[/QUOTE
From my school patch online I would say over 90% are in favor of a full school day, 5 days a week.

In our district over 90% of parents and teachers were in favor of a full return to school as well. But since that's not an option - many have changed their thoughts since the survey went out.

I hope so too. He needs to start saying some definitive stuff and stop saying he's leaving it to the districts to figure out. Now he just dropped the bomb that he wants schools to Covid test. I don't see how legally that can happen or in the 4 weeks we have left before school.
It's all shit show.
