I was in a UFT meeting yesterday. Students in NYC will have to wear masks except if they have a doctor's note stating they can't.

Is this in addition to attempting to keep desks 6ft. apart? Health wise i think distance and masks are the best bet but I'm not sure how younger kids are going to realistically do with that.

If everyone just started practicing now, it would be fine. My 6 year old son wears a mask all the time and never complains. He makes sure he has it before we go anywhere. Children pick up on their parents’ reactions. For example, my 7 year old nephew doesn’t even have a mask since his parents think Covid is overblown so he would probably have a hard time wearing one at school.

My kids are fine with it too but they haven't been in them for long periods. I'm just wondering in general how it will go since some kids are better listeners than others, some are constantly touching EVERYTHING, and some teachers will be better about enforcing than others. Dd's kindergarten teacher visited and had her mask under her nose half the time. Half the high school teachers I used to work with didn't enforce things like cell phone rules so I just wonder if this will be similar. How will I even know if the teacher is in my kids space without a mask. It's clear from your posts that you're an awesome teacher but we all know that some are better than others. I keep wondering where teachers are going to even eat lunch since they're not supposed to be together in a faculty room and they won't have an empty classroom at all. I think a lot will ignore the rules and then there's the potential if one gets it they'll infect each other.

And please stop comparing to the flu...this is NOT the flu.

But it is a fact that you will find almost all of the exact same long term effects being documented in the flu.

Do you have a source for this? Or recall where you read it?

Just the first six that came up when I looked. And again, some parents might argue that the worst long term complication is death, and COVID doesn't even come close to the flu in that category.

And just for the record I voted for in person, and my kids will wear masks, even if it's not required.

But when the AAP states unequivocally that kids need in-person schooling, they reference the many many daycares that have remained open with no outbreaks, and they express confidence that MIS is still extremely rare and almost all children make a full recovery, I think we need to give that some weight.

The hypocrisy is tiring. We are all picking and choosing who we want to believe and trust, even when there are reasonable experts on both sides of the debate.

And that's all I'm going to say on this, because the back and forth accomplishes nothing.

Yes this would be in addition to being 6 feet apart. It will be hard for some kids but I think it can be done. I work with District 75, with medically fragile students, and I'm not sure it will apply for that population. We have different scheduling options too.

Good point. I took my 6 year old out for ice cream last week. It was outdoors but we wore masks while to ordered and then took them off. While we were waiting on line, a little boy maybe around my son's age with his mom and siblings (all not wearing a mask) asked his mom why we were wearing masks? And I thought to myself, this is the problem.

As much as I wish they can do in person, I don't think it is safe yet. So I picked virtual.

Thanks for sharing these links. I will read later when I have a little more time.

The AAP qualified their earlier statement given the recent uptick:

I’m a health care worker and I voted for in person. Kids need socialization. Put the kids in mask and call it a day. You don’t like it, home school your kid. Masks are mandated in most public places so these masks won’t be going away for a long time and people need to get used to it. Asking people isn’t a form of communism so people need to get over that too, irs for the general populations health and your own.

Do you think kids will be able to socialize though? I think even with masks, they’ll be stuck in their classrooms for specials and lunch, desks separated, no shared projects, possibly no recess.

LOL Yep. I remember when I was in High school we had to swim as part of gym class because the high school had a pool.
Half the girls got doctor's note claiming all sorts of issues and reasons why they could not swim because they didn't' want to get their hair wet and then have to go back to classes.

What is your preference for upcoming school year?

Based on the plan my children's school has in the fall, I voted for in person. I am very comfortable with their plans, and I trust the teachers and principal to do everything they can to keep my children healthy and safe.
If I had a child in a DOE school- I may change my vote. That whole school system was a hot mess before COVID, now it's just worse. I would have zero faith in Carranza or DiBlasio to keep my children healthy.

haha maybe! I definitely didn't think of that. On the other hand, hopefully doctors won't be so liberal about writing notes to get out of mask wearing because it is important.

I selected in person.

But my kids are upper elementary. If my kids were k-2 I might not send them. What happens when a kid is upset and needs a hug from their teacher? Or when they get hurt and need attention? I can’t imagine a kindergarteners first day of school....walking into such a sterile unwelcoming environment.

Ummm...Nobody is saying that they are doing this.
But you’re completely naive if you think thousands of kids won’t submit these unnecessary notes because their parents disagree with the mask wearing.
Probably the same families that caused the end of most vaccine exemptions bc they took advantage of a loophole.

I would never do that.
Not sure why you assume anyone here would.
Someone just brought up a point that when there is a way out of something- people- in general -will take it.
Please do not assume I would get my child a fake doctor's note to get her out of wearing a mask when all I did was compare it to something a lot more benign with an anecdotal story of how people got out of swimming in gym class.
Not even remotely the same.

What is your preference for upcoming school year?

Absolutely in person. If the proper protocols are in place they need to be in school. Our district is running 3 camps and Summer School and not one person has gotten sick yet. They are following the protocols and the kids are happy.

I voted for in person but I think what they really should do is put the younger (say k-6) in the buildings, even if they need to utilize the middle and high schools, and have the older kids do remote learning. They younger children need the socialization more. Not to say that high school kids don’t, but they are already socialized and can adapt easier I think to remote learning....

OMG listen to yourself.. are you stuck on stupid? What the fuq already. I posted a story of what I did as a freaking 15 year old, by myself to get out gym. News flash my son doesn’t even have asthma. Second update.. I would not waste my time getting a false doctors note for my son. That’s not how I am raising my kid. But thanks for making a bunch of asinine assumptions.

Per usual, people cant laugh or take a joke or for once get out of their bubble. Let’s realize there is a whole other world besides the lollipops and rainbows of LI. Maybe let’s get our heads out our @sses and realizes people are poor, minorities are struggling more than ever. Schools not functioning as normal is going to push a lot of MY people back. You know the black people that everyone was so hoorah for the BLM movement. When decisions like this happen (ie. Hybrid vs remote), this is how we get pushed further back and we can’t overcome obstacles. Where’s all the loud speaking people now who support this movement? I can’t hear them now?

And understand whether you like it or not, just like vaccines, mothers will get notes for little Billy to not be able to wear mask. I’m a Latina mom, and whether I like wearing masks or not the rule is the rule and best believe my son will be wearing one if he has too. So please don’t come for me.
