What is your preference for upcoming school year?
As a parent, what do you wish the new school year would look like? Assuming covid numbers stay low or as they are now.

I keep flip flopping my decision. At first when I thought the numbers were going down, I was for two day a week in person school, but now that I see the numbers are increasing in other countries that sent kids back to school I am now for all virtual.

All remote to start. The long term damages of having CoVid is something that people aren’t discussing enough. This isn’t the flu. It’s new and there are lingering issues for many, including heart and lung problems.

There are also very serious long term effects from the flu. Many the same as the effects we believe may come from COVID.
HUNDREDS of children die each year from it too.
Just saying, people are picking and choosing the scary facts they want to talk about.

What is your preference for upcoming school year?
I voted for in person. However, I personally would be OK with half in-person and half remote. But, that will work for my family because both my husband and I are able to work from home. Plus, my kid is going into 7th grade and is able to handle school work on her own. I know that is not the case for many, many other families. So, for the benefit of everyone, I think it should be full in-person.
Plus, I feel bad for kids starting Kindergarten or are going to be in a new school. They are not going to be able to meet other kids and make friends if they're at home.
Unfortunately, no solution is good!

What is your preference for upcoming school year?
All remote learning to, at least, begin the school year. With the inevitable second wave that is predicted to begin in the fall, I think there will be more challenges transitioning in, then out, then in class again, whenever that may be.
I just want to preface that I am a teacher myself and want to go back to work and want my kids back in the classroom. But the risks outweigh the benefits at this current time. I hope that will change.
I know that many claim socialization is important....couldn't agree more. But how much socializing will be done when these kids are 6 ft. apart, possible behind plexiglass barriers, not able to eat lunch with one another, no recess, no specials, possibly little to no before school/after school activities, etc. It stinks....totally agree. Also, how much cleaning will be done? I know many districts have gone "green" with their cleaning products due to potential toxins and harmful effects. I have never been one to be overly concerned about cleaning products....but will they start using stronger disinfectants? And what repercussions will those have?
And please stop comparing to the flu...this is NOT the flu.
Sorry to ramble...so many more questions than answers from all directions at this point.

The teachers in Florida are suing about returning to in-person teaching. Part of the argument is that it’s too premature. I wonder if other unions in other states will follow suit. From Tampa Bay Times:
“As of July 9, 2020, the Florida Department of Health reported over 17,000 cases in children under 18 years old, 213 hospitalizations, and 4 deaths,” the lawsuit says. “The harsh reality is that Florida had a 31 percent positivity test rate among children as of last week. The adverse medical impact on our children is currently being studied and observed.”

I never said it was the flu. But it is a fact that you will find almost all of the exact same long term effects being documented in the flu. Only with FAR more deaths in children. So when I see people on FB and even here saying that even one COVID death is too many, I really wonder how the HUNDREDS and THOUSANDS of parents who lost their babies to the flu feel.

Of course they will follow suit. Because these decisions were always going to be made by lawyers and union reps.
And if anyone thinks remote learning is somehow going to be better or more effective in September, they're kidding themselves. All of that is also going to be decided by the unions and their lawyers.

What is your preference for upcoming school year?
I’m a health care worker and I voted for in person. Kids need socialization. Put the kids in mask and call it a day. You don’t like it, home school your kid. Masks are mandated in most public places so these masks won’t be going away for a long time and people need to get used to it. Asking people isn’t a form of communism so people need to get over that too, irs for the general populations health and your own.
I totally get that some kids CANT wear masks, ie: sensory issues, health conditions etc and those children should absolutely be accommodated for. I have one twin with asthma and one with severe sensory issues. My sensory child, we practice with the mask, he doesn’t want to wear it he doesn’t go, plain and simple, he needs to protect his health and the health of others around him. He’s made so much progress and I’m so proud of him. For my son with asthma I would likely ask what my his pulmonologist recommends and ask for an accommodation ex: breaks with the mask in the hallway etc or if the shield can be substituted for the mask (I don’t know about that at this point just my thoughts). Kids that are sick should be kept home and a parent should be required to provide a negative swab. No the test isn’t pleasant, I’ve had it down, have had to hold down my 3 year old to have it done as well, but it’s free so it won’t have a financial impact on families. I think what also needs to be passed is aside from your sick leave, all employers should be required to pay employees for a person Covid + or caring for someone covid + outside the 2 week PFL that’s in place. My mom had Covid back in May and is still sick. 2 weeks isn’t going to cut it for anyone. People send their kids sick to school because they have no child care and only hope they make it through the day (not all parent but it has happened I’m sure).
Protesting public health is obnoxious. I get it the masks suck. I know first hand, I wear an N95, surgical and shield 40 hours a week at work and definitely can’t breathe but I take care of patients without complaint. And I reliably wear a mask in public, even at a drive through, out of respect for others. Life isn’t about me. People that make everything about them, don’t care about others or the teachers that are teaching their kids. I get it these teachers are nervous; but you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Don’t complain about your child wearing a mask if you want them in school full time. This is what it is for now and the virus isn’t going away.
Either way I’m home schooling for the upcoming year. I have pre schoolers. It’s less stressful but that’s just me and I will continue to re-evaluate.

With all due respect, I was not saying that in response to your post. Your reply was not present when I was typing my reply so I had not seen it. I am sorry you thought that it was.
I try not to compare apples and oranges. There are so many communicable diseases and yes, flu is one of them and in fact, one of the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States. And COVID and flu can have similar symptoms and impacts. However, right now we do not have a vaccine for COVID or any identified medication that can specifically treat COVID. We do have vaccines and treatments specifically for flu (now before some people get all up in arms....I am acknowledging that their effectiveness as well as some side effects can be questionable).
But going back to why I said "its not the flu"....well factually, it is not. Unfortunately, many out in the social media world are using that comparison as a justification for safety and putting out incorrect and opionated information and passing it as fact.
I hope that people on these boards and all social media (and I am not aiming this at you) are just tired, frustrated and anxious about our situation and need to just vent. Let's all remember to be kind and think about everyone's safety.

What is your preference for upcoming school year?
My son has ADHD and has an IEP at school. He is going in to first grade. He has a 1:1, gets PT, and counseling. He is in a regular class. He really needs to the structure of school and to be in the classroom. My DH and I have been super conservative about quarantining because I am pregnant. But we try to decided what are things we have HAVE to do versus what do we WANT to do. So for example, we can still get things delivered, we do not have to go to the store. Okay I have gone for a hair cut myself, a massage, and took my son to the barber shop because my husband butchered his hair lol. Those were all risk assessments I made for myself and son. We feel like school is a HAVE to for our son. He does have issues with personal space but is really good about wearing a mask and understanding the situation with the virus.

If schools follow all guidelines INCLUDING wearing masks during instruction then I will support returning to school. I do not believe students and staff will remain 6 feet apart all the time during instruction. A student needs to use the bathroom, everyone needs to put in the mask so they can leave the room. A teacher needs to walk up and down the rows to monitor progress, help students. This will require everyone to wear a mask. In order to achieve social distancing, it will need to be a hybrid model. There is no other in person model that will work.

IN person but I wont be completely upset if its mixed in person and remote as long as during remote time there is live and/or pre-recroded lessons.
and while i feel for teachers; I am not sure why other people are expected to go back to work but some teachers think they shouldnt.
And those teachers that dont think they should hope aren't out shopping or doing really anything but sitting home! Because to sit there and say you shouldnt be working but its ok for cashiers to work so you can shop is just being a hypocrite !

What is your preference for upcoming school year?
I am still not sure. My gut instinct is to keep her home, remote learning. My reasons: I'm still scared of the virus. My daughter (10) has sensory issues and anxiety and has a hard time with the mask- I am not sure how she will do wearing it for 6/7 hours in class. She has already expressed anxiety about going back- because of the mask and because she's scared of getting sick. We are in NYC- our school has adopted Model 2 (I think that's what its called). It's basically a rotating schedule of three weeks- so out of 15 school days, she will be in school 5 of them -one day will always be the same (say Wednesday every week) but then the 1st and 2nd week the other day will change. It's so confusing and seems like it will cause such a disruption. I'm all for trying for some normalcy, but I'm not sure this is going to work for us. She also has an IEP (with pullouts) and I'm not sure how that will work- waiting to hear. We feel like yes, going back to school will provide some benefits, but not sure those outweigh the risks yet. I also feel like it will be a Sh*tshow the 1st quarter so we are thinking to keep her home and see what happens. In NYC, you must do 1 quarter remote before you can change your mind.

I was in a UFT meeting yesterday. Students in NYC will have to wear masks except if they have a doctor's note stating they can't.

I am a teacher. We only leave the house to grocery shop and do outdoor things. We have seen family one time since this all started and it honestly gave me anxiety. My nephew wound up having a fever 3 days after we saw them. Luckily, he was Covid negative. This just reinforced the fact that we will not be interacting with others. My son has had no play dates and my DH and I have seen no friends since March.
Being a cashier is different. My mom is one. They have so many protocols in place and the cashier’s interaction with specific people in short and not sustained.
I want to go back. I want my son to go back. I also want schools to follow guidelines. I wrote a strongly worded email to my son’s superintendent about the importance of mandating masks at all times. I cited scientific articles as well as where the guidelines from the DOH said responsible parties can require masks at all times. This is the response I got:
“We are committed to following the guidelines. People feel extremely strongly about this. For every email I get like yours I get another expressing the opposite point of view. This is an extremely sensitive subject. We don't have the medical expertise to decide whether to interpret the guidelines more strictly and we certainly will not interpret them less strictly.“
They are in fact interpreting them “less strictly”. Masks work. It is not a “point of view”. It is a fact. Not requiring masks will just cause us to be back to virtual learning. Please everyone encourage your local districts to mandate masks even during instruction to protect your family.

Is this in addition to attempting to keep desks 6ft. apart? Health wise i think distance and masks are the best bet but I'm not sure how younger kids are going to realistically do with that.

In Person.
My kids are in camp 9-5. They were masks walking in halls and when they are all together in the gym. They don't wear masks in their small group. They have been at camp for 5 weeks so far and no reports of positive COVID tests. Staff gets tested every week.
If this camp (that has campuses in multiple places on Long Island) and daycares can open safely Why can't schools?!
If districts keep pushing for remote learning, parents are going to push back on reducing taxes and staff. We don't need as many teachers, aides, paras, admin, psychologists, etc if we con't remote learning.
Amer. Pediatrics recommends re-opening, day cares and camps have been opened. Why is there still a debate about schools.
I should mention that SCOPE, the after school program, turned into an all day program for essential workers. Prior to camp, my kids attended. They didn't wear masks at all. They didn't social distance, I can't tell you how many times I came to pick up my kids and kids were hugging, wrestling, sitting so close to each other, etc. To date, no one has tested positive. And these are kids of essential workers were there is a high exposure rate. (the program is still running but my kids wanted camp instead)
So someone needs to explain why schools can't open. It's political, teacher unions and the governor's office.
