District Reopening Guidelines
Has anyone heard from their districts? I'm not in Commack, but I was impressed with their plans. Hopefully, others will follow suit.

District Reopening Guidelines
Many districts in my area have shared their plans. They all seem similar to this.
I am not a fan of the no mask during instruction. Kids are not stationary - even my HS students. I hope most parents encourage them to wear a mask even during instruction.

I am surprised no masks. Both my school & my kids school require masks all day, except when eating, and they are also all allowed a mask break at some point during the day.

My son’s district and my work school district are both doing the same thing. Same thing with other neighboring communities. I usually have 28-32 kids per class. The desks touch back to front and there is usually just enough of a walk way between them to squeeze through To get to students - maybe 2 feet at most.

My district is offering 100% virtual as an option. They are hoping this will reduce class size. So far 25% of parents have chosen this option. They will then be splitting up classes and utilizing every space in the school for grade level instruction (Musi, art, Gym spaces). Specials will go to the students. They will be splitting one section of students into two. Teacher will be in the room 50% of the time and TA will be in there the other 50%. They might also change elementary to the MS or HS building where there is more space.

Commack claims that they have spare unused rooms in the elementary school to accommodate smaller classrooms with social distancing. Call it the A and B side of the building. The teachers will teach the A side in the morning and the B side in the afternoon. When not teaching I guess there will be subs and TAs watching the kids. They do not have the same luxury of space in the secondary schools.
The issue with busing remains though, they can only allow 50% capacity on the bus routes and they will NOT be hiring more bus companies. So if half the elementary kids don’t opt out of busing, the school will then force alternate days for elementary as well as that would then solve the bus issue. If you are opting out of busing you are opting out for the entire 20-21 school year.
Crazy. Who makes the call when we no longer have to social distance. Doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen until after the 2021 school year if they are already preparing people to opt out of busing for all of 20-21 school.

Most districts I think are going to have similar plans. It was interesting to hear his view on transportation because I think that is the biggest hurdle of all. Our district won't put out their plan until the 31st. I would be interested in seeing what the actual plans are for teaching those who do not want to be in school, virtually. Are they putting cameras in the classroom or is is all remote? And if it is remote how do they have so many extra teachers. There are so many questions.

District Reopening Guidelines
Our district can house all the elementary students every day with social distancing (no word on bussing but interesting point noted above). MS and HS are on a hybrid. Most likely group A goes to school Mon and Tues, everyone home Wed for a deep clean and group B goes to school Thurs. and Fri. (Originally there were talks of this just being A/B alternating every other day but they have since changed it- I have a good friend on the task force).

Maybe I misunderstood the video, but I thought it said that the students not with their teacher would be with specials teachers for art, music, special services if they get them for at least part of the time. This seems ideal to me, many districts don’t have the extra space so I think this is a great plan. I’d give up the bus for a year and carpool with neighbors if it meant school 5 days a week.

You are correct. When students are not with their classroom teachers they will be with special area teachers or support staff.

Honestly, not sure I see any of this working.
I am beginning to think if we can't do regular school, do remote school. And I am the biggest supporter of buildings reopening in September. But I am not sure this will be a great education either.

This actually sounds like a dream . Have the teachers come to them, split them up, do whatever, but not remote where they post busy work, videos, and apps to teach them math. My daughter had zero interaction with a teacher since March, and it shows.

I hope my school does this as well. Unfortunately though, DS 1 is going into middle school which I doubt has room to work like this so he will probably be on a hybrid schedule. He needs less socialization though as he is involved in more activities and can socialize there.
ETA - our district hasn't revealed plans yet but, I'm not expecting anything beofre 7/31. And hopefully they are blessed by Cuomo.

I would be thrilled with that plan but many other districts will not have the space or money to make this work unfortunately.

i skimmed through it and I would be happy with what was proposed.
I am extremely happy that kids are not expected to wear masks all day because in reality they would never keep them on correctly all day anyway and they would probably be playing with them. I for one don't want my kid touch to their face unnecessarily all day; even before covid I didn't want them too cause thats how they get sick with the stomach virus and other crap!

i was outside this weekend at night wearing mask on line waiting for Carvel and there where 3 people in front of me. by the time i got in my car my face was starting to really sweat!
I cant believe people are in freaking Disney world right now in that heat with a mask on all day!! I would die wearing it. And bravo to those who can wear it all day in the freaking heat my asss would never survive it!
i do feel horrible for my kids camp counselors who have to wear them; esp. this week. I dont even know why they have to wear them outside when the kids dont if it was up to me i would tell them not too! And this camp is all all day outdoor one!

I get what you are saying but this just supports that ventilation in schools is terrible and that masks should be worn.
I am happy that schools in NY open “late” compared to other regions. Unfortunately, those teachers and students will be used as a science experiment for the country and we can evaluate if they were successful in limiting the spread.

He said he would take it case by case and either provide more PPE, give out some "home instruction" (which will probably look similar to what we did in March), or you can choose to homeschool. They aren't going to put cameras in the classrooms so those who choose to keep their kids home can dial in to the classroom. And you know the teachers aren't working any more hours than what the unions dictate.
He already said he isn't hiring more teachers. They aren't going to "open another school, or building full of staff" as he said.
