Those of you with PVC or vinyl fencing...come on in
We have gotten several estimates for vinyl fencing and they vary quite a bit. One guy is significantly cheaper. By looking at his brochure, I can't see any huge difference between his product and the others.
Part of me thinks something is off and I should not go with him (even though he's licensed, insured, been in business for a while and referred by someone we trust). The other part of me thinks it's just a fence, what could go wrong? My question to those of you with PVC or vinyl, have you had any problems with it? Have any of you noticed a quality issue?

Just curious what the difference in pricing that you got is.
We are doing three sides of our yard, and got three estimates a little under a month ago. All were within $100 or $200 of each other and under $5,500.

Some is thicker than others, same goes for the posts. If they have a showroom or when they come out for estimates you can ask if they can bring a sample of material.

We are also doing 3 sides only. The back and the side are about 180 feet and the front, which we are adding lattice to, is 40 feet. We are also doing an aluminum fence by the pool. I am getting a range of $7900-$10,500 but the cheapest I got was $5900. The aluminum fence is roughly $1500 so subtract that from the quotes to compare. I am wondering if there is a legit difference in the product that I should be wary of the $5900 quote. I can't tell from the brochure if it's any different. The other companies use Illusions as the brand. This guy uses Interstate. I tried researching the brands online but didn't have much luck.

I'm not that knowledgeable about it, but there is a difference in thickness/strength, and the way it is installed. My one neighbor was the first to have the PVC. After they had theirs done, I got a quote and decided to go ahead and match the other 2 sides. I wasn't really friends with them when I first moved in, so I don't know who they hired, but the fence companies I got quotes from said the neighbors fence is thinner/weaker PVC. It looks the same, but you can def feel the difference if you lean up against the fence on one side of my yard vs the other 2 sides. Our was expensive, but worth the extra cost. If we have any wind, the panels fly out of the cheaper fence. The neighbor is always out there putting it back together. Mine has literally never ever fallen apart, not even during hurricanes. I was also told there is a difference in how some companies install it. Some just dig a hole, pour cement and stick the posts in. The company I used pours extra cement into the posts, so instead of being hollow, it's solid about 1/2 way up each post. There were some other differences too, but I can't remember them.

My DH and our friend do fencing on the weekends. Theyre not a professional company, but our friend worked for one for YEARS so he gets alot of his supplies and what not from them. If youre in Suffolk PM me and I can give you his info if your comfortable using a private person.

Go back and ask to see a sample. He should be able to either bring a board to you or even a piece of scrap and then compare it to the other guys.

Years ago I went with a company that had great reviews here on lifamilies, mainly for being very inexpensive. He was by far the cheapest quote. I think all fences have their problems, but we've had so many. Some of the posts started sagging. During major wind storms, we just expect slats to come out. My husband has learned to fix it over the years, but I think you get what you pay for.

Not all fence has problems. We've had our PVC fence for a long time. At least 13 years, maybe a little more. We haven't had any problems with it, literally not 1 problem **knock on wood** ... watch I just jinxed myself lol.
But seriously OP, you don't want to be out there after every storm trying to put the fence back together. It's worth it to spend the extra money. We used Suffolk Fence.

We went with the “cheapest quote” and haven’t had any issues. We tried to convince our neighbors to go with the same company when they needed to have parts of their fence moved. They went with the more expensive option of their Previous fence company. They’ve had panels fall out in storms, the top cross panel detach from the post, etc and we’ve never had issues.

We had got two quotes and went with someone who was doing it cheaper. It was a "friend" of a "friend". We have had them now for almost 8 years. They did get hit with a tree during sandy but the tree guys were able to put back together.
But knock wood it has been good.
Just hate having to clean it when it turns green.

Thank you for all that responded. I'm still trying to figure out what to do. I don't LOVE the vinyl fencing and I'm spending all this money on my yard right now that it doesn't make sense to not LOVE the way it looks. But DH is opposed to wood because 1. it's super expensive 2. it's high maintenance and 3. It will need to be replaced sooner rather than never. I just find it so much less in your face. If I had a tremendous yard it wouldn't be so bad but I don't.
I feel like I'm going to feel like I'm living in a cool whip container. Anyone feel like that? LOL Or do I sound insane? You can be honest.

I say get what makes you happy, but if you go with standard stockade, its much cheaper then PVC. Thats actually what we put up because we didnt have the money for PVC at the time.

What about a colored pvc fence? I’ve seen them in beige-would be closer to wood and not stand out as much?

The colored PVC fences that come in beige-ish colors are slightly off from my siding so it will clash. The wood grained or black ones are very pricey to install and they have a very small warranty on them because they get discolored pretty quickly. Every person that came here poo-poo'd them.
I just have to do the white and deal with it. I will plant and try to make it look less in your face.

we used V&O montalvan. Best quote we got and the fence was done so well. 3 other people on my block have used them since then, and no complaints.
So no, I don't think the lowest quote necessarily means lower quality

The illusions brand is made right on long Island so I can't imagine you wouldn't be able to see it in person at local showrooms. They also make the wood grain ones so idk why the quality would be different on those.

We ended up putting Leyland Cypress trees in front of the fence, so you can always do something like that to break up all the white.
Also, PVC is not without maintanence. It needs powerwashing, especially if there is no landscaping in front of it.

We put in railings a few years ago and there were two beige-y colors. I think they were almond and khaki. Our house was sort of a beige/tan and we went with khaki, which was darker than the house. It looked nice. Though, it might be a different effect with a whole fence. I've seen white fences with gray insets (I guess that's what you'd call them). That would break up the white. I tend to agree with you, I'm not a huge fan of the plain white PVC either.

I actually just got off the phone with a landscape designer and she said to plant those trees as well. As long as we don't blind ourselves everytime we look in the backyard, I'll be okay with it. LOL
