The article says: Bottoms (the mayor) said she wants people to have the same passion towards ending community violence that they have for police reform.
A poster in this forum said something very similar in another post and was criticized for it. The mayor of Atlanta (a black woman) was able to recognize there’s a problem within the community and talk about it publicly but if somebody else mentions the same thing, that person is completely dismissed and pretty much called racist. I just don’t understand that mentality.

Sadly, I think she will lose her position over this. We are the middle of a cancel culture epidemic. Cancel culture has become trying to ruin someone's life and livelihood over comments that you disagree with. We can't just criticize what she said, say she is wrong or have a conversation about it. It is a matter of trying to deprive someone of their ability to earn a living because we disagree with what they said. This censorship insanity seems so un-American.

I just don’t understand that mentality.
It depends on the context of the conversation.
Of course it's important to acknowledge those community problems. The BLM movement is about more than police reform anyway - it calls for fighting the systemic racism that creates and exacerbates a lot of those problems. Poverty. Food deserts. Lack of healthcare. Educational deficits.
It's when it's brought up in the context of discrediting the movement or the importance of police reform. It's the tone used. "How can we please these people?" What, diversity isn't enough? What about, but but but.... I do not believe Bottoms made that statement in that type of context or to be condescending or dismissive. Granted, I didn't see a whole transcript of what she said.

To be honest, I don't think anyone should be posting any political opinion on social media, ever
#1- nobody cares about your thoughts and opinions. You may think you are so important, that posting a 3 paragraph diatribe about politics is necessary, but guess what? You aren't. And nobody cares.
#2 - you will never change anyone's mind. Politics are very personal and very sensitive. I am not going to change political parties or beliefs on issues because Stacey on Facebook wrote such an eloquent piece defending the opposing view point. All it does is cause people to argue in your comments.
#3- As we teach our kids, anything you put on the internet and social media never goes away. Why put up anything that can come back to haunt you later in life, or even now.
Just keep you opinions to yourself. Discuss them with your friends and family.
Work for your causes.
Work for changes that you want to see.
Posting on your status is not helping the cause or changing anything.

From what I see in post, is she supports equality and is against a child being killed for which there doesn't seem to be much outrage for. She believes there are bad people in a good organization. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see anything wrong with what she wrote. Now, if she should have wrote it in the first place, that's another issue. I won't debate that since I don't know much about this person. However I don't think it's right to call another poster a POS for their beliefs. I thought we were all grown ups, but again, maybe I'm missing something.

Her comment was racist. Here's why:
White people don't get to police anti racist movements. "Well I would support them if..." "I don't support them because [names incident]." People who say those things are putting the onus on black people to comport themselves in a certain way before they will support change. It's fake allyship extortion and it's bullshiit.
Her claim that the movement "allows people to be murdered" is holding an entire movement responsible for the actions of a person who at this point (unless I missed something) is not even known. I usually go to one of the breast cancer walks out east every year. If someone heaven forbid opened fire along the walk and killed someone, do we all stop donating to breast cancer research?
To go with the above, "allows people" holds an implication that she disapproves of the protests. The article mentions illegal barriers or something. Part of being antiracist means sitting with discomfort. Not comfortable with road blockages, barriers, etc.? Oh well. Suck it up. Some people are fighting to change systems that have caused hundreds of years of trauma and damage. You can handle a backup on South Oyster Bay Road. (I'm talking about the protest. Not the murder. Obviously that should spark more than discomfort.) Black lives are more important than white comfort. All the "but but but"s and "what about...." just derail the conversation. I'm willing to sit with the discomfort of the backlash I will get from this post because other things are more important.
She centered herself. "I think blah blah blah...." "I don't support blah blah blah." She's just amplifying a white racist voice. No one needs to hear that.
BLM is about much more than police reform. BLM is the movement. Are there assholes in the movement? Sure. But if you look at the work that they are doing and advocating for, the goals they want to accomplish, and the systems they want to change, and you go "I don't approve", yes, you're a racist.
There's probably more but I need to run. And honestly, other people have said this stuff much better than me. Please see the many resources out there for more info.
Racism is a white person's problem to solve. We ALL grew up in a racist society and have internalized racist social norms even just subconsciously. That doesn't make us bad people. What makes us bad people is when we don't want to try to be better.
I doubt any of the above will change any minds but it was worth writing even if it makes one person stop and think a little. And if it doesn't, maybe it would help someone feel seen.

Completely agree, you cant post anything anymore . Someone will always find something offensive about it.
