My district is having a board meeting this evening, the doctor was just asked how far apart kids need to be and he is saying 6 feet, 3 feet with masks.
They are proposing for k to 5 1/2 day morning, no lunch, time to clean building, and then the other kids come in for the second half of the day five days a week.
For middle and high school 2 days a week, half day for two sets of kids like two sets for elementary. Virtual learning other days.

That doesn't make any sense. None. At all.
They don't HAVE to do that. Democratic states are not going to vote for Trump. New York isn't turning red anytime soon.
Also, the issue isn't black and white. Of course people want their children back in school. But most people want to see at least some precautions in place.
Also, it is July 8. It is too early to make any promises. I am on both sides of this (teacher and parent) and I can tell you that innovative solutions ARE being discussed and plans are being proposed. Nothing is definite. Far from it. But people think and read in clickbait and soundbites and nuance doesn't fit into those things.
I recommend everyone speak their mind when appropriate. Reach out to your district. The PTA. Your representatives. Etc. etc. Advocate for what you want to see.
Frankly, if you want your kid in school in September, please do your part to keep the curve flat. Wear your mask when can't social distance, particularly when indoors. (I'm generalizing here - not referencing the OP, the QP or anyone in particular.)
And if you (again, general you) know anyone from one of those goddamn red states that fukked this up royally, tell them to stay the fukk out of NY. Seriously. Visit another time.
I actually have a good feeling about September IF things stay the same.

I saw a press conference today from the White House saying how it's imperative the kids go back to school in the Fall
This is the excuse they’re using to justify school closings even though there are zero proved cases of covid that originated in a school setting. The same thing happened last year with the measles, those that wanted to pass the bills to make vaccines mandatory validated their actions by conveniently using the outbreak even though not one case originated in a school, not one! And there were zero deaths due to measles. None of that mattered though and those legislators were still able to continue with their plans and deny the right of an education to thousands of healthy kids. Personally, the same precautions I take with covid are the same precautions I take with the flu but if I were a person to take extra precautions to this specific virus, schools would not be what I’d fear the most.
Exactly, what did happen with that that huge measles outbreak Dont hear anyone with it now.

2 days for higher grades? Won’t work as the older you are, the more you need to be in a classroom. Even college kids are having a hard time doing online classes.

It quickly disappeared with these bills passing a democratic assembly, a democratic senate, and with the signature of a democratic governor. And before anyone starts judging and labeling (cause apparently ppl love to label everyone) me, I am not a republican. I actually used to be a democrat up to last year when these same legislators greatly impacted my family and thousands of others here in NY. If it’s any worth mentioning, these are also the legislators behind the flu and HPV vaccine bills, and I can guarantee u that if there’s ever a covid vaccine, they’ll be the ones trying to make it mandatory as well. I can only hope that ppl start to see these legislators’ false illusion about caring for public health.

i work for the DOE and i don't read much into any of this. They never have things together until like the day before.
Case and point: I am teaching remote summer school. Kids started on Monday. Kids weren't on my roster on Monday, and the program in which summer school is taught from was down. Why you ask?? Because the DOE decided Monday was a good time to sync them up in the system, and crashed the system. Makes perfect sense to sync up the students THE DAY THEY START.
nothing is ever done/decided on time. We will find out on Labor Day what the official plans are

This has to be one of the worst plans I have seen yet. Are they trying to make it so difficult to figure out that all parents just opt for full remote instruction.
I also think he should have waited on laying out this plan until he had all the answers such as childcare and special education.

Just read a story about a breakout in a daycare in Syracuse. A mom was sick, thought it was allergies, and continued to bring her kids to their in home daycare. Turns out she was positive as was one of her kids who was asymptomatic. Now they're up to 16 positive cases tied to the daycare.
It's just so depressing to think about. Parents don't even keep their kids home when they're sick, they sure as heck aren't going to keep them out of school bc someone else in the family is sick. We're so screwed.

I want to know what DiBlasio intends to do when the shelters are overrun. You know, those places where families live together in communal spaces because they cannot earn an income because they have no childcare.
Or what CPS is going to do when small children are left home alone for 12 hours a day. What happens to those kids? What happens to those parents?

For measles though - there were cases in schools. We live near the epicenter. Many schools were ordered to close or send home children who weren't vaccinated.

Are the teachers working a full week with just rotating kids coming and going? Or are the teachers also going to do x amount of days in class and x out of class?
Does their exposure not matter?

And we all have a boatload of money. My full time daycare budget was re-allocated once my kids hit school age... Our district offered daycare for first responders kids but it was still $45 per day... And the day wasn't conducive to any first responders schedule.

For those who are citing the outbreaks now happening in daycares as reason to limit school or keep them closed. The plan seems to be reducing school hours to only end supplementing more hours children spend in daycare / aftercare programs. So how is this reducing the spread if the kids are still in school or daycare setting after their reduced day of school? If they are getting it now, they will 100% get it in the fall with Flu & strep. Daycare / aftercare is actually worse than having them in school because they are running around like animals with no structure anyway. Also the kids will still have to eat since it will be 12 when they get out?
This just adds to how dumb this plan is and the only thing it’s going to do is hurt the kids and families in poor neighborhoods or those who can’t afford daycare. It’s only screwing over working parents and children at this point.
And aftercare doesn’t stop in 5th grade. I utilized it for my son in 6th and he will be attending whatever they offer in 7th grade. It was a pain in the @ss when he had the random half days with no after care once a month and now they want me to figure it out 2-3 days a week?

100% agree
Not everyone has a stay at home parent who can be there at the whim of the school district.
And that means the kids will have to go somewhere when school is not in session.
That somewhere is most likely a place where they will be spreading it around just like in school. But with no learning.
Makes sense. Makes total sense. Great fuking plan

And I know for a fact my sons school won’t have a place to send them to or a bus to transport the kids in the middle of the day. So basically my son will he holed up in the cafeteria in his own school, like normal aftercare but for longer hours. Do they expect me to pay for these extra hours when he could just be sitting upstairs learning?

Speaking for myself, I was just sharing something I read. Not trying to convince anyone that schools should stay closed. I hope they open, as does my teacher husband. I just don't see how they're going to open and stay open as much as I want them to.

It’s not only on here but I also see people posting this as a reason on FB. I was just confused on how this is used as an argument for the hybrid models, unless these people want kids to remain home 100%. Which to me is also unrealistic.
But I digress.. I gave up on schools opening as normal. No sense in being outraged over something I can’t control.

For every comment about how this is a ridiculous, magical plan, there is a counter argument that kids need to go back to school, I need my kids to school, I want to teach in a classroom, teachers need to do their jobs, teachers don't want to be put at risk and on and on and on... What IS the right answer? I am not sure one exists so curious what others would do if they were Cuomo or the others making the decisions
Full time school in September. Period . Kids aren't at risk according to everything I have seen.

If people are scared they can keep their kids home and home school. Enough is enough.
I saw a press conference today from the White House saying how it's imperative the kids go back to school in the Fall
This is the excuse they’re using to justify school closings even though there are zero proved cases of covid that originated in a school setting. The same thing happened last year with the measles, those that wanted to pass the bills to make vaccines mandatory validated their actions by conveniently using the outbreak even though not one case originated in a school, not one! And there were zero deaths due to measles. None of that mattered though and those legislators were still able to continue with their plans and deny the right of an education to thousands of healthy kids. Personally, the same precautions I take with covid are the same precautions I take with the flu but if I were a person to take extra precautions to this specific virus, schools would not be what I’d fear the most.

For measles though - there were cases in schools. We live near the epicenter. Many schools were ordered to close or send home children who weren't vaccinated.
Were those cases proved to have been transmitted in school? I was very, very invested in this issue last year and I don’t recall the DOH ever mentioning any cases that originated in a school, well at least public schools. From the DOH not from the news cause we all know how “accurate” they are, often exaggerating numbers and blaming the unvaccinated. I remember calling the DOH to find out what were the number of cases and they were no where near the numbers reported by the news. Regarding children that are not vaccinated being sent home, that has always happened for as long as I can remember. Schools have parents sign a letter about it. This was the protocol followed for a long time without ever being a problem and rarely needed to be followed. I actually don’t know any family (non vaxed/ex vaxed) that have kept their kids home because of an outbreak.

For those who are citing the outbreaks now happening in daycares as reason to limit school or keep them closed. The plan seems to be reducing school hours to only end supplementing more hours children spend in daycare / aftercare programs. So how is this reducing the spread if the kids are still in school or daycare setting after their reduced day of school? If they are getting it now, they will 100% get it in the fall with Flu & strep. Daycare / aftercare is actually worse than having them in school because they are running around like animals with no structure anyway. Also the kids will still have to eat since it will be 12 when they get out?
This just adds to how dumb this plan is and the only thing it’s going to do is hurt the kids and families in poor neighborhoods or those who can’t afford daycare. It’s only screwing over working parents and children at this point.
And aftercare doesn’t stop in 5th grade. I utilized it for my son in 6th and he will be attending whatever they offer in 7th grade. It was a pain in the @ss when he had the random half days with no after care once a month and now they want me to figure it out 2-3 days a week?
I think kids need to go back to go school full time, well my son needs to go back. This has already impacted him severely and it will only be worse. But I already accepted that our government is most likely going to fail my son in the fall. My plan is to figure out what to do by January to make it better for him and my family.
Speaking for myself, I was just sharing something I read. Not trying to convince anyone that schools should stay closed. I hope they open, as does my teacher husband. I just don't see how they're going to open and stay open as much as I want them to.
Yes—Someone asked if kids were getting infected so I mentioned a news article where kids were in fact getting infected.
We can open schools, but if a school/area has an outbreak then the school(s) will get shut down with probably zero notice.
I don’t envy anyone right now in a position of power that has to make these decisions. It’s a no-win situation.
