So what are some affordable areas in CT with good schools? I will seriously rent until NY goes back. I’m being totally serious too, my kids lost over 3 months of schooling they are not losing more because of our “leader”. .
Fairfield- particularly the Greenfield Hill and Southport sections 
I will pine always.
Also Darien and Westport. Home values are high but taxes are low.

LOVE Fairfield County. I also love the areas along the shoreline in New Haven County, particularly Guilford & Madison. Absolutely gorgeous, quintessential New England, top rated public schools, great downtowns, incredibly safe, full of young families.
Ugh, why are we not there.

I think any plan at this point is meaningless.
Life changed drastically from Jan-March.
Then again from March-May.
Who knows what’ll happen from now until September??
I think we can all just hope for the best but plan for a worst-case scenario.

I really don't see this as a good thing. Kids will not be able to wear masks all day. That will not happen in the younger grades. This plan is far from ideal but I don't think any plan will be. This is will be good for the first week and as soon as someone gets Covid, half the school will be out and in quarantine.

Kids are going to have to wear masks all day in NY too. I am almost positive that will be one of the rules.

The taxes are certainly lower than LI, but I wouldn’t call the home prices affordable. Darien and Westport are two of the most expensive towns in CT due to their proximity to NYC.
Generally, the further you are from NYC, the more affordable it is. You can find good schools in pretty much any area of the state. It all depends on what part you want to live.

It’s certainly not all day, but a lot of activities that have opened recently for kids in CT require them to wear masks for at least a portion of it. My kids haven’t had issues wearing masks to appointments, but I’m sure they won’t be thrilled with wearing them all day especially when it’s hot at the beginning of the year. It’s interesting though because masks aren’t required in daycare settings, which I know are smaller than classrooms, but are impossible to keep kids apart. If the schools need to reconfigure classrooms to keep the kids socially distant and do things like keeping windows open to circulate fresh air, sanitize, stress hand washing, keep the same kids together all day, I wonder if all day mask wearing is really necessary especially with younger kids who will likely have more trouble with this.
The districts are required to also have a distance learning plan in place. I wouldn’t be surprised if schools are shut down again at some point in the fall.

I think there should definitely be protocols in place. CT will have masks, social distancing, etc. But even with very strict protocols in place, there will be parents not comfortable with their children going back, and teachers not comfortable going back. And remote options should be available for them.

My friend outside Atlanta said they got their guidance yesterday - you can either go in person full time or stay home full time. You have to decide between 7/2 and 7/10 and it's a commitment for a semester. They will have a dedicated "in school" teaching team and a dedicated "at home" teaching team.
They haven't disclosed yet what the "in school" portion will look like but, they did state there will be options.

The article I read made it seem that they could remove the masks during instruction. They seem to just need them in the hallways.
All staff and students will be expected to wear a protective face covering or face mask that completely covers the nose and mouth when inside the school building, except for certain exceptions including when teachers are providing instruction.

you can get a nice house in Greenwich in the 800s, and smaller homes that need work in the 600s-700s. But their taxes are only 2-3k/year. I would be able to afford a way higher mortgage given the huge tax savings. Same is true for alot of other areas of CT. Greenwich is the lowest, though. It's insane how low they are... the parks and rec dept for greenwich is amazing too, and they have so much scheduled for the kids there. If I didn't have to drive to Queens everyday, i would move there in a heartbeat

We have friends in Darien and their taxes are $6k. The houses are expensive but you're right, once you factor in taxes, your monthly output isn't all that different from somewhere on LI.

But as parents that’s part of our job also—to figure out the possible scenarios and plan accordingly. Not wait until the last minute and scramble. If we know there is a possibility that kids won’t be in school all day/every day we have to plan for that possibility.
I’ve already spoken to my boss and my job has approved for me to work from home at least 2 days a week until January. So I’ve been interviewing for a sitter to come 3 days a week to watch my kids and help them with schoolwork if necessary. My husband posted the opportunity on Facebook and we probably got 50 replies within a few hours.

Why? Just about every other occupation is back to work. People are now sitting in offices all day. People in transportation are in buses and trains all day. Everyone needs to go back to work. Come September I will be back to sitting in my office and i will deal with it because I’m an adult and it’s time to go back. We flattened the curve (beyond). We know how to treat hospitalized patients better so it’s not a death sentence if you are admitted. People worked at the height of the virus bc they had to, stop complaining and go to work. Only exception is if you are in an at risk category obviously, which is the teachers who can do the virtual portion of the schooling.

The districts also need extensive time to plan what school will look like. The districts need to formulate both an in school and distance learning plan since everything is subject to change based on the numbers.

Each district is supposed have a 3 phase/part plan using the State guideline/requirements. I have nothing meaningful to add... perhaps by August there will be.

Clearly we have a different definition of affordable. The median home price is in the $1.3-1.5 million range and while there are some possibly smaller homes or ones that need work in the $700,000 or $800,000 range, I still wouldn’t classify that as affordable. I know the taxes are a steal in a lot of Fairfield County towns compared to LI, and maybe some of the home prices are comparable to various LI towns, but your money goes a lot further in towns that are not as close to NYC.

Well yes, that's the case anywhere.
We are in contract on a house about 10 minutes from the CT border. The taxes are literally 4x what they would be in Darien (we didn't look in Greenwich) and because of that our budget was capped somewhere between $200-$300k lower than it would have been in CT.
Affordable is relative. For someone who needs proximity to the city, CT is an amazing choice. Not to mention it's just so much nicer than most parts of LI.
