Snow Days
I know Summer is just beginning but since schools just did 3 months of remote learning do you think that's the end of snow days? Will school's just do remote learning on what would be considered a snow day?

No. I doubt it since not everyone had chromebooks or were prepared. Plus, the schools gave out chromebooks for those who didn't have and you had the option to go to school to collect their stuff.
For a day or two of a possible snow day I think that's just a day off and they are allowed a certain amount in the school year calendar.

I've read it's the end of snow days and remote learning will take place on those days instead.
ETA - Our district has chrome books for grades 3 and up (but at elementary school level they stay at school).
They have now implemented a 1:1 initiative and all children will be able to take their devices home.

Well the way our "distance learning" goes she'll get a few busy work dittos posted which she will get done in 10 minutes... then she can spend the rest of the day having a snow day.

Well the way our "distance learning" goes she'll get a few busy work dittos posted which she will get done in 10 minutes... then she can spend the rest of the day having a snow day.
Yeah - it's really not a day...
Then we will probably get Feb break back (we usually only have a long weekend) every year.

At our school they are going to go back and forth as needed - like if they start school and then won't be there (pandemic, snow, etc) they will send them home with them.

At our school they are going to go back and forth as needed - like if they start school and then won't be there (pandemic, snow, etc) they will send them home with them.
I can see that but many times you don’t know until that day if you will be out and that could be for days.

My DD abhors snow like I do and I will never catch her playing it. She hates being cold and wet.

Our district is 1:1 but I can’t imagine they would have elementary students taking them back and forth for a single snow day. They would get lost, forgotten at home, broken, etc.

Next year all our students will be given chrome books to take home but I do not think they will be doing remote learning instead of taking a snow day. It is too much to organize just for one day, spur of the moment. I do think though that if we are out for extended periods, like a severe snowstorm or a hurricane, they will use the remote learning to catch up on days or to at least give some work.

Also, just wanted to add that what we should be thinking about is reduced vacation days. With schools most likely doing a hybrid model in the fall, they are going to need to make up days to make sure that they complete the ciriculum. Feb Break and probably most of spring break may be lost.

Exactly this. The Union would not allow it and to be honest, I don't blame them.
I wouldn't want to have to work extra days for the same amount of pay.
Remote learning is a joke anyway. So if they are going to do it in any way shape or form, I'm just chalking up yet another year of my daughter's education to being lost.
We're going to have a generation of really behind and undereducated kids/adults soon if this continues.
Not to mention the mental/social problems this nonsense will cause long term.
Meanwhile- all I am seeing this week on Facebook is kids getting together for last day of school pics with their friends/their bus stops. Teacher's visiting kids homes and saying good bye- taking pictures together.
I see birthday parties with tons of kids together.
Get togethers with school friends at the beach.
If there is no spike in kids after all this, they need to be back in school in the Fall

Not sure. They quickly purchased them for k-5 when covid started. Before distance learning each grade had a set that was shared in school.

I know many districts are in talks with their Unions now. It is probably an uphill battle but one that still needs to be had. It really doesn't matter with elementary school students because anything missed can be taught the year after but AP classes or Regents classes need to have specific items taught and they need in class time to do that. That is why they cancelled the regents this year and modified the AP exams. Unless they cancel both for next year, it is going to be hard to get in the mandated coursework if they are not in school full time (which most likely they are not). Our secondary school is already considering cancelling midterms so the kids will be in school those days as well.

So just to add fuel to my fire....
Today the report cards came out for my DD in elementary school.
We knew that everything for the 3rd triester would be pass/fail since they weren't in school. OK, no problem.
It's actually pass or N/A. I get it, they can't know kid's home situations, you can't fail them for not being able to distance learn.
However...
I notice DD got all Passes but Social Studies and Science were marked N/A.
Now she did ALL the social studies and science work and got 100's and 90s on all the tests posted during distance learning.
So I emailed the teacher to ask why did she get an N/A in those subjects when she worked hard and did well.
The response was-
The District made the decision to take off Social Studies and Science midway through Distance Learning.
However, I continued with SS and Science because I felt it was important and it was good ELA practice, as well. We used the tests as comprehension practice. There will be a NYS Science Test in 5th grade, so we wanted to make sure we covered the material. I hope this answers your question.
So the district decided that they didn't need to teach them social studies and science?
Why?
And this was never communicated to us by the district OR the teacher.
I'm so fuking done. This whole thing is a huge joke and I'm so sad and worried for these kids and their educations.

It’s a joke. Mine got F for every class even doing work. They kept saying this or that wasn’t done, umm I would sit with him after working all day to help. I watched videos, googled to help, whatever they asked. He passed with a B for the year which he would have done so much better but just so glad this is over.

Distance learning is a complete joke, and anyone who thinks this is an acceptable long term solution is off their rocker.
As for snow days, I wouldn't mind it. My kids don't really love the snow, and are bored to tears by 10 am on snow days, so if some school work keeps them busy, that's fine with me.

One of my kids got an N/A in gym and the other one got a grade... It seems I didn't log enough because others got grades.
