I feel bad for Cuomo to have to make these types of decisions. Either people will die or people will not get paid. I honestly think he is doing what he thinks is best for the state of New York. Maybe we can get a few months out of not having our hospitalizations too high to control. The stay at home order worked. It was suppose to slow the spread. He is now slowly opening the economy, so we can slow the spread.

I have relatives in 3 New York hospitals. They told me they never saw in their life what they saw during March/April. I have an aunt who works in a nursing home. She thought the same thing.

We now have to do our job. Wear a mask when you are out in public or when you are with groups of people who do not live with you. Many people aren't doing this. So we will see another spike. Look at California, Arizona, Florida, and Texas. Their numbers are rising. So are hospitalizations. You could see the deaths rising in about a week or two. This will be New York if we do not do our part. Wear a mask and open things slowly.

This sucks, all the way, no matter how you look at it. BUT, what scares me more than anything is having to do it all over again. Seeing the tremendous spikes in numbers in the southern/ western states is truly frightening. I's so much rather go super slow here, now, than rush to open and have to go backwards.

ITA. I don't know why people are so hard on Cuomo. IMO, he's doing the best he can in these crazy, unprecedented times.

I think he is in a tough spot. It's a terrible thing. I feel so bad for those who have lost everything. I do think he handled everything appropriately. I don't even want to imagine what we might have seen if we didnt shut down. I think a slow reopening is also key so it doesn't come black. Look at what's happening in FloridaChat Icon

He’s in a tough, no win situation. I believe he does not want the hospitals to be overwhelmed and for people to die unnecessarily. I believe that he understands that people will still get Covid and die, but wants NYers to try their best to get hospitalizations low so people can get adequate care and not die due to poor hospital conditions.

But we have gotten to that point. Covid floors have been closed or almost no patients. Outdoor tents that were built for more patients closed with NO patients and even the ship in the city only had 180 patients who were taken out of the hospital. We are FAR beyond that point now. People are being laid off from hospitals as they have no need for them anymore.

Yes, which is why we are reopening. I can't stand the man, but he can't blamed for this. He is opening up exactly as he said he would, two weeks between phases.
As for schools, I read today that the board of regents is currently meeting and discussing the fall, and they are saying it is virtually impossible to have all CDC guidelines met by early September. So, if schools don't reopen, I am not sure how much of that would be his decision, he is putting them in charge of that.

Well except for the announcement that things that were slated for phase 4 all of a sudden can't open in phase 4. After these business owners were working towards and planning for it.

Yes 2 weeks between but now decided, after movie theaters already had dates out there for opening in NY that he is taking that back as well as gyms and malls. He is making phases within phases.
I am sorry but he is picking and choosing and it is ridiculous that I can have someone a foot away from me cutting my hair but I can't walk through a mall with a mask or sit in a theater with seating far apart from others.
Every decision is made by the govenor's of each state. Not sure if that is a power that Trump does not have but that was established in the beginning. Cuomo is practically the only one with phases like ours and I get not opening up too quickly.
The entire point was to make sure the hospitals were not overwhelmed and they are empty now. It is time to open little by little and we were doing fine. Allowing people to get back to work and earn a living. Now he has pushed that back for many, many people and their extra money will be running out of unemployment in July.

I agree with you. I guess I am just so terrified of us going backwards and becoming the next Florida or Texas. March & April were so hellish, the thought of going back to that time makes me sick to my stomach. Malls & movie theaters should be allowed to reopen with phase 4. Gyms are cesspools without a pandemic, all of that shared equipment and people sweating & breathing heavy...sounds disgusting lol.

This. I think it’s smart that he is reevaluating the phases as more data comes in from other areas that are currently reopening.

Exactly. This entire thing has been a "live and learn" situation. I think seeing what other states are going through is causing Cuomo to (rightly IMO) be more cautious. There is a huge difference between a mall opening and a salon. A salon involves one to one contact - and you KNOW the other person is wearing a mask. There is no way to control who is not wearing a mask in a mall - many will, but many probably won't. And much easier for large groups to congregate in malls. So, I can see why malls opening had to be delayed.

I am thinking he probably decided to split up Phase 4 into different sections is because of what he is seeing in the other states that are spiking.

He is trying to stretch this out for as long as possible. He doesn't want to have to go backwards. If we open too fast we will be back in our houses and more businesses will be closed besides the Phase 4 ones.

Just because our numbers are low right now, doesn't mean they will not go back up if we do not do things smartly. Like wear a mask. NYC and Long Island is hard enough to socially distance because of public transportation, elevators, and living so close together.

I really don't think the questions is IF we in NY will get hit again, but WHEN. If we wear masks and slowly open things, we can put off getting the high numbers of hospitalizations and infected.

Today they announced that malls, gyms, movie theatres will NOT be part of the phase 4 reopening plan.

Link to news article

Was coming on here to say the same thing:

Malls, outdoor theme parks, gyms, and movie theaters will not re-open at the start of Phase 4 in New York.

They will phase them in. Could be a few days, weeks, a month - who knows?

Looks like I'm doing a return by mail! Chat Icon
No biggie but DH is going to be very disappointed about the gyms!

There is a new gym in my neighborhood that was supposed to open APril 1st. It looks liek they put a lot of $ into re-doing it ( it is an independant gym) and htey have all sorts of procedure in palce ( even soem magical germ killing door handles) abd htey are hoping to open in July, but that proabably won't happen. I feel terrible for them & hope they can handle the loss of income.

Yeah I saw some post on Facebook or Instagram from a gym owner who had to close her business after 10 years because she can't afford it anymore after being closed this long. It's heartbreaking for the smaller, independently owned gyms.
So many people would be willing to go back to the gym too. My husband said he'd sign every waiver under the sun just to be able to work out in a gym again

I’m the same as your DH. Wanted to go back to the gym and my Kung Fu school. However, I received an email that when they open you will have to sign up for classes (which will make it difficult since it’s a small school but I can deal with) and wear a mask to work out. There’s no way I can wear a mask for 45 minutes while doing a high impact kickboxing class. We do 4 sets of circuits which in include jumping jacks, push ups, High knees, squats etc.. plus self defense moves.

There’s no way. I’m so bummed that I won’t be able to go. I’m not even sure if my son will stay in Kung Fu, which is really sad because he’s been going there for 6 years.

Wearing a mask while doing that kind of intense cardio actually sounds dangerous to be honest.

I don’t see how a mask would be feasible under those circumstances. Though, I do see lots of people and kids on bikes wearing masks. No helmets, but masks. Afraid of COVID. Cool with traumatic brain injury.
