Re: What are your plans if school doesn't open in the fall?
Please explain then my cousin how has 2 years on that site, 2018 and 2019 and it looks like her starting salary was 55K and then 68K. How do you get a 13K raise in one year? She is 27.
I am 20 years her senior and while I am not in teaching, I have been working for longer than her age and don’t even make her starting salary nor ever did. I get 18 days off a year besides weekends.

Hmmm possibly I guess. Most jobs don’t get pay raises that large though.

She could have taken a lot of classes towards her masters, added coaching or clubs, taught summer school, and/or taught an extra class.

It angers me to hear that there are teachers not working. Honestly, I do not know ANY who have not been. My co-workers are ALL doing what I am doing and my own kids teachers have been AMAZING. There are not enough hours in the day to do all that we have been doing.

I wish you had been my child's teacher too! She did not get one single live instruction from any teacher during the entire 3 months school was shut down.
She has the same teacher for 3 classes who posted worksheet after worksheet for each class. It didn't make me angry, just sad, until I picked up the contents of my child's school locker and looked through her binders and saw that that was all these teacher has been doing all year - worksheet after worksheet. If she did anything else, there was zero evidence. Thatmade me angry. The math teacher introduced algebra via YouTube! My child got homemade videos from the PE teacher!!! The technology teacher didn't even post a homemade video. The stress and anxiety of being on the computer day in and day out all came to a head yesterday - her first day without any school work, in the form of aches and pains and general malaise that kept her in bed all day feeling off and out of sorts. Today she is a happy go-lucky-kid out bird watching in the front lawn.
Oh come on! That is unacceptable. I would be furious too.
I really hope this situation has really highlighted to these districts who is an asset and who is not. Laziness and ineptitude should not be tolerated. Not when they are getting paid top dollar to teach. That's garbage.

I am sorry... that is insulting. I have to tutor on the side AND work all summer long to make ends meet. Top dollar means what to you? I live on Long Island.... I would need to make DOUBLE my salary to NOT live "check to check".
Are you a new teacher? Most I know make close to or over 100k. Sorry if I made that much I wouldn’t need another job to make ends meet.
Most I know make around that also. Teachers are very well paid in Suffolk County (not sure about other counties). Especially compared to teachers in just about every other region in this Country. I grew up in Michigan, we had excellent teachers and schools, very low property taxes. Teachers make probably 40k there now. Teachers go to work 183 days a year, have school vacations off with their kids, have the Summer off. So, the "woe is me" thing with teachers is annoying. Tell me another job with those perks? My friends even know how great of a gig they have. And before anyone says it, I didn't say they don't deserve what they earn. They do, 100%. But let's not pretend they are overworked and underpaid like a daycare or preschool teacher who makes minimum wage.
No, I am not a "new teacher". I am in my 12th year. I make well under 100K working for the DOE. I am also a single mom of 3 kids. I tutor, babysit, AND work over the summer so that I can "fill in the gaps". Normally I SQUEEZE by paycheck to paycheck. I own my house, have a mortgage, drive an 8 year old car, and live WELL within my "means".
And I am not even going to reply to the "perks" you claim we have. Until you have spent one entire school year as a teacher, you can look from the outside and be as upset as you want over my summers "off" (yeah right)... we ARE "overworked and underpaid". But I learned a LONG time ago not to argue with people who enjoy demonizing teachers especially when you have ZERO clue what goes on beyond your own childs classroom (and no, having a friend who is a teacher does not qualify you to decide what my job entails).
I'm talking about Suffolk County not DOE teachers, who I know don't make as much as Suffolk County. And I'm not "demonizing" anyone. It's a great job here in Suffolk County according to all of my friends who are teachers (no one complains like you are, but they also don't work for the DOE). No one is upset about anything, not sure why you are? You are very defensive about something I posted that shouldn't even require a defensive response like this. I value teachers. I have one that works for the DOE in my life, who works very hard, and doesn't make nearly as much as a Suffolk County teacher (at least the ones I know). Settle down. I'm not slamming your profession.

I just have to say the teachers on here and the teachers I know in real life are def 2 separate animals
All teachers I know in real life work hard for their students all school year but also know their perks are friggin fantastic. Which was one reason they became a teacher to begin with. Having children w a teachers schedule is aces and they know it.
Why is it a bad thing to acknowledge that a specific job has perks and own that? I worked as a Freelance graphic designer for the past 12 years. It can be very tough. But working for myself was amazing. I made my Own hours, set my own prices and would take lunch on the beach because I could. I didn’t only dwell on the nights I’d stay up creating new logos or full marketing designs for clients which was grueling.
Teachers are very important to the growTh and enrichment of our youth and nobody can take that away from Them. Especially the good/exceptional teachers. But come on... you have to admit, it’s got its perks. Just like other jobs do
Ding ding ding. Everyone I know, knows their perks and loves them. I don't begrudge them. Great for them!

Hmmm possibly I guess. Most jobs don’t get pay raises that large though.
She also could have ran a club, coached something, etc. They get paid extra for that.

I am a teacher, and I will be the first to say the job comes with a lot of perks. Why is saying you love summers off a bad thing? Nobody is saying teachers don't deserve it or that they don't work hard. I know how hard I work, I know that my day does not end at 3 pm. I bust my ass for these kids, and will always happily do so.
But, I also love my summers, my week long breaks throughout the year, three day weekends. That doesn't make you some horrible person for admitting the wonderful things about your job. EVERY job has perks. I don't work harder than any other profession, all jobs have pros and cons. Sometimes I feel like nobody is ever allowed to say anything about teachers that isn't sunshine and unicorns. Are a MAJORITY of teachers wonderful? YES!! But there are crappy teachers who do not deserve what they make. Same as the crappy doctors, nurses, lawyers, bankers, police officers. Every profession has them.

Regarding teachers, many seem to have forgotten that not too long ago they were having active shooter drills, police offers patrolling elementary schools and ideas of them having gun training. I was so grateful that I didn’t go the teacher route at the the time because I couldn’t handle that anxiety of wondering if today would be the day every time I left my house for work.........
On the other hand, I acknowledge my jealousy that I always thought teachers don’t really pay for health insurance insurance. For me, that would save 18k yearly plus copays. My school budget just went up significantly due to increase in their health insurance costs. Paying 5k for school's supplies doesn’t seem so bad if you don’t pay health insurance. But I also could be an uninformed azzhole and maybe wrong about the free healthcare thing so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Yeah and it's still a really sweet deal. If teachers paid what most people paid into their healthcare and retirement plans they would die.

Eh, I know plenty of private sector jobs who have perks just as good, if not better than teachers with less education requirements.
You should see how places like Apple and Facebook treat their employees.

I think we will relocate to South Carolina for the year. I can't do another year of this....
I saw friends this weekend and we were talking about us all permanently relocating together lol - taking over a housing development.

Where would you go? The curve in SC and the southern states is dramatically up trending now.
