I agree it is early - and ultimately it is not her decision - Cuomo/Superintendents/etc... I kind of got the feeling that was what she was thinking when I spoke with her yesterday - and for her to outright say it today was a little surprising.

And we all know they will open. They will not have camps open and daycares and be way past phase 4 not to open.
Needless to say, you don't know that. Camps and schools are not equivalent. And we could have a second wave. Until there is a vaccine or cure, I'm not assuming anything.
I am personally not thinking about it. I'll deal with it as it gets closer.
I agree, I do not believe it is a given that schools will open in September. I think it is more likely now that numbers are staying low, even with reopening. But nobody knows for sure, even when we hit Phase 4, that Cuomo will allow schools to reopen.
With that beings said, I agree that camps are different, but child care centers will become like schools if schools don't open. People will be forced to put their children in daycare while they work. So now you have overcrowded day care centers. I 100% think schools SHOULD reopen, I *think* they will, in some form. But nobody can say they will for sure.
This is where I think things will get difficult. I think centers will have a cap. The child care center my job utilizes has a cap of kids they can accept and they are affiliated with a large medical center. I think not opening will really put people in a bind. I think schools need to open, even if it’s 1/2 days they need to open but I think many employers will need to rethink their work model if schools don’t open

What are your plans if school doesn't open in the fall?
I find this all crazy  I remember seeing an article about Cuomo pushing for online school (granted that was a month ago I saw it) but my boys were in nursery school. I started researching pre school curriculums for homeschool. I don’t want them to loose academic skill, though they go to a play based school so I’m just trying to find what’s the best option for them :-/

I think schools will open in some form or another at least for the younger grades. I’m in CT and I’ve heard that some districts in my state are looking at high school and possibly middle school remaining remote in order to free up the space for very small classes in the younger grades. That could consist of essentially monitors in certain classrooms with streaming a teacher in from another classroom. I’m sure districts are looking at a wide range of scenarios.
What I’m even more concerned about is that a second wave hits and schools are closed again for extended periods of time. I think many of us can agree that distance learning was not successful and was extremely difficult to balance along with FT jobs. I really do not want to go through that again in the fall and/or winter until hopefully a successful vaccine is introduced.
DH and I both work for large employers who are not rushing to bring people back. I think the decision on returning will depend on large part on what happens with school/childcare. I will have more in person meetings in the near future, but I will mostly be working from home at least until the fall and possibly through the end of the year. It would be so much less stressful to be able to work from home with the kids out of the house.
So the elementary schools would use the middle and high schools?
I am sorry but my high schooler NEEDS to go back as he will not graduate learning this way. This was horrible and he had no motivation as why would you with a pass/fail grade and work harder than in the class with no one teaching you?
Yes, elementary students would use those additional buildings in order to maintain very small class sizes.
Our district was graded for 6th through 12th with an option for pass/fail if students preferred.

He plays the game but he knows exactly what he wants to do.
I can't stand the man, but I do not believe that he would have school districts submitting plans for approval if he was 100% certain he wasn't reopening them. Everyone was so sure he wouldn't open camps, but he did. He may have an idea of what he would like to do, but I don't believe he knows for sure.
This is the same guy who swore he wouldn't open up NYC until they hit all 7 metrics. They are still at 29% for hospital beds, and they are moving to Phase 2. He changes his mind all the time.

Do you get the sense that the teachers don't really want to reopen? I think they are enjoying this time off. In my district, they got a RAISE and did so very and disappointingly little. I would give them a D-. They were completely awful.

I have read so many posts regarding school on this site and Facebook and have really remained quiet. But I have to say, I WANT TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER! This has not been a vacation, this is not a time to have more free time, if anything, it has been the opposite. I have to juggle Live teaching Zooms with my own children along with services such as Speech. I have to juggle my own students and live instruction. I have my iPad with me pretty much all day and alerting me when a student e-mails/messages me so I can provide immediate feedback. Then I have to care and entertain the children without letting them see friends, taking them to a park, etc. I don’t shove them on a tablet or TV if I can avoid it, I never have even before the pandemic. Then I try to get the kids to bed by 8:30 - 9 so I can START my work. Grading daily assignments, making presentations, reworking everything that I did in the classroom so that it works online. Most nights I was up to 1-2 am....then up around 6-7 am the next morning because little kids have their own internal alarm clocks. And my youngest is teething....so she has been up several times a night....so much for sleep...
So....
I am not trying to make this a “me, me, me” post, but I do occasionally see messages that seem to have a very broad view of what teachers Are doing during this time. Posts that say that we don’t “deserve” our money and that we are getting paid to do nothing. And for many of us, that couldn’t be further from the truth. I have gotten more migraines than ever from staring at a bright screen in a dark room so I don’t wake anyone late at night. I would like to say I have lost weight from the stress, but God knows that is not true. 
I miss my students terribly, and teaching high school, I did not get to say goodbye to those kids who are going off the college and often don’t return to see us.
And believe me, I know there are crappy teachers out there that have put in little to no effort during this time. If your kid ended up with one of them, I am so sorry. Kids should be the last ones taking the brunt of this.

100% believe you and feel for you. My friend and other teachers I know did this BUT the reality is that lots of teachers didn't do this!! While I don't know if they want to go back or not I am sure they enjoyed the whole 20 minutes they took to upload assignments and basically did nothing for the rest of the day except to maybe answer emails or google comments which I can tell you took sometime hours before a response cause clearly they weren't checking them often.
I will say thank you for all you did!! Sorry there our teachers out there who did nothing and made teachers look bad.
When I say a teacher is bad I dont mean anyone. And I hope you are just as pissed and disappoint me and others are on how little effort was put in by lots of teachers! Quite frankly it isnt fair to students and even more so to the teachers that actually did work!!

Kstarfish82, I spoke with my daughter's teacher today. He basically said that with young kids at home this was impossible for him as well..I think it took a lot out of teachers.

I was waiting to see what grade you taught. Maybe for high school you might be able to get away with remote learning. My 2 elementary school kids were jipped an education. One of the two was awful did the absolute bare minimum. She posted maybe 2-3 "assignments" per day and rarely gave any comments. Mostly posted "educational videos" about the Revolutionary War. It was beyond dreadful and I am pissed off.
I think that there should have been a mandate to have the teachers do live learning sessions with the children. Morning and afternoon sessions. Math lesson, social studies, science, etc. Have them in their rooms - ALONE - with a computer taping themselves (it isn't hard - my 10 year old makes videos all the time!) and using the damn smart board I paid for. Even small, daily 30 min interactive zoom sessions would have been nice. I frankly do not care if they have young children of their own. I have three and still had to work full time.
No, they did not earn their keep in my district and yes, the school budget passed easily with raises. Damn the administrators, the teachers union and yes the teachers who left our children behind. I can forgive one month, but three months of useless busy work is unforgivable.
Why were none of the multiple superintendents able to think outside the box for our kids? The teachers have masters degrees - they should be able to adapt to remote learning, especially this day in age. I cannot understand how more parents aren't furious?!?

Christine2 - I spoke to the principal because I too felt there was a discrepancy in the teaching between my 2 children. One didn't have a Google meet until June. I mean, really? Every other class in the school had them... My older son's two teachers (he was in a co-teach) were very accessible while my young son's teacher wasn't as responsive - and since the second grade team taught - he had a ton of work and not much guidance.

Actually it was very difficult for the high schoolers and most of them just gave up and didn't do anything.

I have read so many posts regarding school on this site and Facebook and have really remained quiet. But I have to say, I WANT TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER! This has not been a vacation, this is not a time to have more free time, if anything, it has been the opposite. I have to juggle Live teaching Zooms with my own children along with services such as Speech. I have to juggle my own students and live instruction. I have my iPad with me pretty much all day and alerting me when a student e-mails/messages me so I can provide immediate feedback. Then I have to care and entertain the children without letting them see friends, taking them to a park, etc. I don’t shove them on a tablet or TV if I can avoid it, I never have even before the pandemic. Then I try to get the kids to bed by 8:30 - 9 so I can START my work. Grading daily assignments, making presentations, reworking everything that I did in the classroom so that it works online. Most nights I was up to 1-2 am....then up around 6-7 am the next morning because little kids have their own internal alarm clocks. And my youngest is teething....so she has been up several times a night....so much for sleep...
So....
I am not trying to make this a “me, me, me” post, but I do occasionally see messages that seem to have a very broad view of what teachers Are doing during this time. Posts that say that we don’t “deserve” our money and that we are getting paid to do nothing. And for many of us, that couldn’t be further from the truth. I have gotten more migraines than ever from staring at a bright screen in a dark room so I don’t wake anyone late at night. I would like to say I have lost weight from the stress, but God knows that is not true.
I miss my students terribly, and teaching high school, I did not get to say goodbye to those kids who are going off the college and often don’t return to see us.
And believe me, I know there are crappy teachers out there that have put in little to no effort during this time. If your kid ended up with one of them, I am so sorry. Kids should be the last ones taking the brunt of this.

I was waiting to see what grade you taught. Maybe for high school you might be able to get away with remote learning. My 2 elementary school kids were jipped an education. One of the two was awful did the absolute bare minimum. She posted maybe 2-3 "assignments" per day and rarely gave any comments. Mostly posted "educational videos" about the Revolutionary War. It was beyond dreadful and I am pissed off.
I think that there should have been a mandate to have the teachers do live learning sessions with the children. Morning and afternoon sessions. Math lesson, social studies, science, etc. Have them in their rooms - ALONE - with a computer taping themselves (it isn't hard - my 10 year old makes videos all the time!) and using the damn smart board I paid for. Even small, daily 30 min interactive zoom sessions would have been nice. I frankly do not care if they have young children of their own. I have three and still had to work full time.
No, they did not earn their keep in my district and yes, the school budget passed easily with raises. Damn the administrators, the teachers union and yes the teachers who left our children behind. I can forgive one month, but three months of useless busy work is unforgivable.
Why were none of the multiple superintendents able to think outside the box for our kids? The teachers have masters degrees - they should be able to adapt to remote learning, especially this day in age. I cannot understand how more parents aren't furious?!?

I am also a teacher and have 3 young children at home. It was absolutely impossible for me to live teach from home. Most of my work was done after they went to bed. I made voiced over lessons for my students and answered any emails that I received. I also called parents when they needed assistance. My husband was expected to be at work and I was home alone with my children. I did the very best I could. Please know this wasn’t a fun break for teachers. This isn’t what we were trained to do with our own babies hanging off of our boobs.

I teach 1st grade in the South Bronx. I am also a single mom of 3. I have spent 12-15 hours PER DAY every day since March WORKING. I do 2-3 HOURS of live instruction each day. I do 1:1 conferences with my students, I prepare video lessons for those unable to join the live instruction. I create, prepare, and assign work for my students. I answer emails, make phone calls, and text with parents all day every day. I am assessing and reading and listening. My day NEVER ends! I respond to emails as I get them, even if it is 10:00pm.
I have attended PDs and trainings... I am in meetings and collaborating with my colleagues.
In between all of this, I have a 7th grader who struggles with math and NEEDS me to sit with her for the class. I also have a 9th grader and an 11th grader who are attending their own meetings and classes and a lot of the time, require some assistance with research. Math has been my kryptonite! I cannot help with Geometry... so we replay the lessons over and over.
So PLEASE... before ANYONE says "Must be nice"... this has NOT been a vacation. This has been a nightmare. I cannot wait to go back to work because it is NOWHERE near as stressful as this has been.
I know there are SOME teachers out there doing the bare minimum, but I FIRMLY believe that those are far and few between. Every teacher I know is working their butts off. The ONLY "nice" thing was not commuting.

I agree with everything you said. I was livid. But now I'm just glad it's over. I don't know if I will bring this up to the Principal. Wouldn't they know who's been working and who hasn't? Idk...
In our school.... 2 teachers in the same grade. Both have multiple kids of their own at home and are elementary-school aged & younger.
One was living alone with her kids while her spouse lived elsewhere because he works in healthcare. 2 kids & one on the way.
She did live instruction, fun zoom meets that included game nights with the AP, coordinated a parade meet up for her students, daily meets to go over things, and I stopped asking what they were up to after a while because I was livid we weren't getting this type of engagement from our teacher...at the same school....in the same grade!
And ours....married, living w/spouse with their 2 kids. Provided YouTube videos for each math module, and zero live instruction. For the first 60 days they had one meet per week and it was awkward and uncomfortable. She added a 2nd meet eventually and it was more of the same. There was such a complete disconnect, robotic state almost. I feel for her. She must not be handling any of this well because she would miss meets and say she forgot, only started responding to comments on google classroom a few weeks ago, and was just checked out, like CHECKED OUT> I couldn't have a conversation with her. I would ask if she had a schedule drawn up with links to their meets with dates & times (kept changing days/times). She said, no I don't do that, sorry!
There were 2-3 assignments a day, but really it was 15 minutes I-ready, 15 typing, 15 on what ever else they usually got for homework. Kids were done in about 2 hours.
Gym was watch a video of a penciled animatronic car-crash dummy doing aerobics and answer questions on a google form like what was your favorite move.
These may be learning opportunities for some, but not for me. I felt ripped off too!
What these awesome teachers on this thread are describing is nothing short of amazing. I'm floored every time I hear there are teachers working right now because I don't hear it often. Like a magical fairy-tale, in times like these, there are some real super-teachers taking care of our kids education and I love them for that. Wish we had the honor. But it seems not everyone is doing as well, mentally.

It angers me to hear that there are teachers not working. Honestly, I do not know ANY who have not been. My co-workers are ALL doing what I am doing and my own kids teachers have been AMAZING. There are not enough hours in the day to do all that we have been doing.
I am sorry for those of you who have had bad experiences... I wish I were your childs teacher... we have dance parties every morning!

I wish you had been my child's teacher too! She did not get one single live instruction from any teacher during the entire 3 months school was shut down.
She has the same teacher for 3 classes who posted worksheet after worksheet for each class. It didn't make me angry, just sad, until I picked up the contents of my child's school locker and looked through her binders and saw that that was all these teacher has been doing all year - worksheet after worksheet. If she did anything else, there was zero evidence. Thatmade me angry.
The math teacher introduced algebra via YouTube!
My child got homemade videos from the PE teacher!!! The technology teacher didn't even post a homemade video.
The stress and anxiety of being on the computer day in and day out all came to a head yesterday - her first day without any school work, in the form of aches and pains and general malaise that kept her in bed all day feeling off and out of sorts. Today she is a happy go-lucky-kid out bird watching in the front lawn.

I saw my son's teacher today. She told me that they have a committee working on the curriculum and another committee working on the logistics for the anticipated return to school in the fall. There was no doubt in my mind by what she was saying that both she and her colleagues want to go back just as much as we want our children back.
I do not think for one second this was a vacation for these teachers. I can only speak from my own experience but I think they were busting their butts to try to make this abnormal situation seem normal. I, for one, gave them much nicer gifts this year than normal because I know they had a lot of struggles. To read what some of you are saying about your kids' teachers is disheartening and sad for your kids. Sorry to hear that. Let's hope we can go back this fall!

Oh come on! That is unacceptable. I would be furious too.
I really hope this situation has really highlighted to these districts who is an asset and who is not. Laziness and ineptitude should not be tolerated. Not when they are getting paid top dollar to teach. That's garbage.
