Do you get the sense that the teachers don't really want to reopen? I think they are enjoying this time off. In my district, they got a RAISE and did so very and disappointingly little. I would give them a D-. They were completely awful. 
I am a teacher. Everyone I work with wants to go back to work. We want to have real interactions with our students and build relationships with them. No one I know wants to stay home in the fall.
I also wouldn’t call it time off. I worked everyday during the pandemic. There are a lot of behind the scenes things that’s aren’t teaching that are also involved in the job. Grading, planning, team meetings, contacting families, etc. I literally had to devote one day a week to reach out to students who I had not heard from all week. I teach HS so sometimes that was 20+ families.

Seriously this is becoming ridiculous. Schools need to open. If camps and daycares can run, there is no reason for schools to stay closed. There should be two choices: open schools and if you feel comfortable with sending your kids, then do it. If no, remote learning can be the other option for those who chose not to send their child. But all these scenarios that are being thrown around (with the exception of rigerous cleaning and hand sanitizing )are not going to work. And like I posted on another thread, I am on the payroll for one job and that is the job I work at. I am not on the school districts payroll to teach my child. If this remote BS continues in the fall, the teacher , principal and superintendent are getting an email from me stating that I do not work for them, I have my own job to do for 8-9 hours a day so her work gets done when it gets done and that is the end of it. The remote learning was thrown together in a pinch but this is not a long term thing. Time to move it along.

I think they know how this is impacting the students education and moreso social well-being. I think they also worry about their jobs. If we go to a remote platform we may not as many teachers per grade.

99% of the teachers I know want schools to reopen in September. We all want desperately to be back with the kids in the classrooms. I think any teacher will tell you that online learning is not nearly as adequate as in person learning.
With that being said, I do have one member of my family, a 1st grade teacher in the DOE, who is very vocal about wanting schools to stay closed, and she says all teachers in her school feel the same way. However, it has nothing to do with being afraid of COVID. She said "I like not having the long commute, having to battle for parking, and having to deal with the kids social-emotional BS."
So, contrary to what many believe, there are crap teachers out there. Not every teacher is working their butt off since March 16th and truly wants what is best for the students.

I agree, I do not believe it is a given that schools will open in September. I think it is more likely now that numbers are staying low, even with reopening. But nobody knows for sure, even when we hit Phase 4, that Cuomo will allow schools to reopen.
With that beings said, I agree that camps are different, but child care centers will become like schools if schools don't open. People will be forced to put their children in daycare while they work. So now you have overcrowded day care centers. I 100% think schools SHOULD reopen, I *think* they will, in some form. But nobody can say they will for sure.

They definitely are different.
Daycares can reduce capacity. And the camps in our area that are opening will not open on rainy days, have reduced group size and have exchanged small busses with AC for larger busses where kids will sit spaced out (and only next to siblings) or completely eliminated transportation.

I'm a college professor, and I easily spent 12 hours a day creating lessons, transforming in-person content into online material, reaching out to each of my students individually to see if they were okay, etc., all while dealing with the same struggles that many others have experienced in the last few months--worries about my DH who is an essential employee, serious anxiety, concerns about job loss, etc. I know many of my colleagues were doing the same.
I'm not unequivocally canonizing all educators, but I needed to respond to this blanket statement about teachers "enjoying this time off." Many teachers, at all levels, do care and worked hard, and the last few months have been the complete opposite of "time off."

The Board of Ed has a few different scenarios they are working with IN CASE we can't go back. Nothing has been decided and likely won't be decided until August- we can't predict what will happen this early.

I'm in Queens and we had a zoom meeting with the principal last week and she said that it should be business as usual in the Fall. I hope so.
If not, I will probably do what I've been doing for this whole time with remote learning. I go into work late after I get DD situated for the day. I'm fortunate that I have my mother to watch her and flexible bosses. I know not everyone is in the same boat.

I will cry but I have already prepared myself for it not to happen. Not saying it won’t but I rather prepare myself of the worst and be pleasantly surprised if it’s better.
Either way I always work from home but it will be another torturous time trying to do remote learning. Unless of course the district decides to steps up and actually require the teachers to do some actual teaching!
Not going to lie I fear Cuomo will delay phase 4 so schools can’t open but just a fear. Hoping my fear is wrong

I think schools will open in some form or another at least for the younger grades. I’m in CT and I’ve heard that some districts in my state are looking at high school and possibly middle school remaining remote in order to free up the space for very small classes in the younger grades. That could consist of essentially monitors in certain classrooms with streaming a teacher in from another classroom. I’m sure districts are looking at a wide range of scenarios.
What I’m even more concerned about is that a second wave hits and schools are closed again for extended periods of time. I think many of us can agree that distance learning was not successful and was extremely difficult to balance along with FT jobs. I really do not want to go through that again in the fall and/or winter until hopefully a successful vaccine is introduced.
DH and I both work for large employers who are not rushing to bring people back. I think the decision on returning will depend on large part on what happens with school/childcare. I will have more in person meetings in the near future, but I will mostly be working from home at least until the fall and possibly through the end of the year. It would be so much less stressful to be able to work from home with the kids out of the house.

So the elementary schools would use the middle and high schools?
I am sorry but my high schooler NEEDS to go back as he will not graduate learning this way. This was horrible and he had no motivation as why would you with a pass/fail grade and work harder than in the class with no one teaching you?

This assumes that daycares and camps being open, together with all these protests doesn't result in a complete resurgence of the virus in New York. The entire southern US is spiking right now. Universal and Disney are planning to reopen. There is a huge political rally planned for this Saturday that is expected to draw crowds of over 100,000 people - the vast majority of those attending will NOT be wearing masks. (in fact, I would be shocked if there were genuine photos of anyone attending the rally wearing one).
I think everyone needs to hang on tight, because the worst is yet to come.

To answer the OP. DH will continue to work from home. He has already said he doesn't want our child to go back to school unless there is a vaccine. I told him if HE intends to keep her home, the HE needs to devise a home schooling plan and submit it to the powers that be for approval, because I am not doing it.

Cuomo talked about colleges today and Buffalo is opening as normal as I read the other day.

I agree it is early - and ultimately it is not her decision - Cuomo/Superintendents/etc... I kind of got the feeling that was what she was thinking when I spoke with her yesterday - and for her to outright say it today was a little surprising.

No principal has any idea of what is going to happen. My principal is praying we return in the fall. My son’s principal is doing the same.

I agree that was surprising, and, IMO, unprofessional. That may be her gut feeling, but nobody should be giving likelihoods of anything because not even Cuomo himself has any clue. I will say that if numbers continue to stay stable through the summer, it would be TERRIBLE for them to keep buildings closed.
