Woman tests postive for 2nd time
I wish we knew what TF was going on with this thing. I read the other day that it's possible the antibodies only last a few months and then you can get it again. But it's not been widespread reported on so I have no idea if it's been researched much.

We need to know about lebgth of immunity before we can make big decisions as individuals or a society. Too many people think a positive test & recovery means they are good to go--back to normal.
Plus, we need to know about long term effects on the body/health/lifespan. Are bad effects cumulative if you catch it more than once?
Like with AIDS, polio, etc., we will know more as time goes on. Society lacks patience. Vast resources and minds are working on it each day, and for that I am grateful.

The problem with this report is it never said if she tested negative after her first diagnoses.
Having anitbidies doesn’t mean you are negative.
My parents got tested for COVID was negative and then got tested for antibodies and had those (we figured they had it but at the time they had it couldn’t get tested)
I would like to know if she ever tested negative after the first time she got a positive

True. My FIL had it and after he felt "recovered" - no symptoms, no fever, he kept testing positive for it (he's in a nursing home).
they couldn't move him from the covid wing until he tested negative.
It took a long time to get a negative test even though he had zero symptoms anymore.

So if you can get it again, what does that mean for a vaccine?
I assume it will be like the flu shot where you have to get it every year- because the antibodies don't last as long as say the antibodies for measles, polio etc?

She probably never fully recovered. It would be very unlikely that she would catch it again so soon. Leading virologists have said that if you can catch it again, it would be very unlikely that it would even happen in the same year. I'll trust the people who study viruses for a living over this "news" article. 12 weeks is hardly enough time to develop and lose antibodies. It can take up to 8 weeks after getting an immunization just to develop working antibodies. Donating plasma 2x so soon after testing positive probably put additional strain on her immune system, resulting in the virus making a comeback.

You get the flu shot every year because the virus mutates quicker. The antibodies last, they just offer less protection because the flu strains are different every year. If you get the flu, chances are you will have life long immunity to that strain. Once it mutates though, you can get sick again because you caught a new strain. Immunization from vaccines normally aren't life long but they usually last for years.
From WebMD:
Flu viruses continually change over time. This constant changing enables the virus to evade the immune system, so that people are susceptible to the flu throughout life. This process works as follows: a person infected with a flu virus develops antibodies against that virus; as the virus changes, the "older" antibodies no longer recognizes the "newer" virus, and the person gets sick. The older antibodies can, however, provide partial protection against newer viruses.

Woman tests postive for 2nd time
My DH kept testing positive for about 8 weeks. He felt fine after 2 weeks but needed to test negative to be allowed to go back to work, and just kept testing positive every week even though he felt absolutely 100% better. I believe many people are or have been walking around while still positive and just dont know if they aren't getting tested.

But are people testing positive while asymptomatic contagious? I have heard mexed things on this.

Also keep in mind the failure rate of tests. So example, when we need to move patients within my hospital they need 2 negative tests 7 days apart before they can move to a clean unit. More than one occasion I had a positive patient that needed to be moved, was medically stable and had the 1st of 2 negative tests needed to be moved and 7 days later had another swab to hopefully achieve the second negative and then swabbed positive again with no change in status..

It’s so frustrating. Nobody knows... I have a feeling it keeps morphing. Why else would it be so inconsistent?
