Found tick on DD

Yesterday after being outside all day we found a tick on DD head. We took her to urgent care who offered a 21 day prescription of amoxacillan and a script to take her for blood work in 2 weeks. They told us we should still follow up with our Ped. I called the Ped this morning who told us they wouldn't even see her until 30 - 45 days to pass and if she started showing symptoms or a rash was present. They also said they wouldn't give DD the antibiotics.

Dh and I think we still should still give her the antibiotics as a precaution but I don't know if there is any reason not to. The Ped office didn't really say anything when I asked.

Re: Found tick on DD

DD had a tick on her about 2 years ago.
She found it at school and the school nurse removed it and called me and told me to call the ped

When I did, they weren't too concerned. They asked if the nurse had saved it- she didn't.
But they said at the time the kind of tick that was prevalent in the area wasn't a carrier of lyme or anything.
They said to watch it and if it developed a rash or bullseye to call them.
But they did not prescribe any antibiotics and did not want her to come in nor did they send her for bloodwork
All was well, she never got a rash or anything.

Re: Found tick on DD

Assuming they removed the tick at the doctor's office. Was it engorged? Did they say what type of tick it was? I would be reluctant to put my child on a 21 day course of antibiotics for a "what if" but that's just me.

I agree 21 days is a long time. It will mess with her gut bacteria etc and I had to use antibiotics when they aren't absolutely necessary because I worry about building up resistance to them

Re: Found tick on DD

DC got Lyme disease a few years ago.

The new guidelines (even at that time) were not 21 days. The recommendation was shorter (I can't remember how long), and that was for a confirmed case.

I would watch every day for a bullseye and then bring her right back in for the meds.

Found tick on DD

My area is full of ticks and my kids get them at least once or twice every year. I do a full body scan of them nightly when they put on their pajamas or when they bathe.
If you find it right away and the tick isn’t engorged it usually isn’t a problem. I’ve never done the antibiotics we just wait to see if there’s a rash.

It was engorged and we removed it before we brought her to urgent care. We literally removed the tick and was at urgent care within 30 min

Right. I was gonna say, was the tick engorged? It usually takes a minimum of 24-36 hours for the tick to be attached and to transmit disease. They also don't engorge that quickly.

I live in a wooden area and they are on us often enough. Just watch for the bullseye rash. But it is highly unlikely.

Most likely, she might be itchy for a few days in that spot; but that is normal after a tick bite. This doesn't mean disease.

Re: Found tick on DD

Did you save the tick? What kind was it? I'd be reluctant to start the antibiotics. 21 days is a long time and could really cause a lot of stomach issues. I'm wondering why urgent care prescribed an rx without blood work confirming Lyme. I'd prob wait and see if there are symptoms or a rash.

I would absolutely do the 21 days of medicine. I had erlichiosis from a tick bite, this is not something to play around. If you don’t the risk of terrible long term problems vastly outweigh the risks. Talk to your doctors. Also stay out of the sunlight while on the medication.

21 days is the normal course of medicine for a tick bite. You are giving terrible fear mongering advice. OP talk to your doctor and not the internet.

It's not fear mongering. The OP talked to 2 doctors and got conflicting advice. You obviously didn't read the whole post. 21 days is the normal course when treating Lyme or another tick-borne illness. They don't know if the OPs daughter actually has Lyme though and their own Ped told them they wouldn't do an antibiotic yet. I asked what kind of tick before I actually give my opinion. I would be reluctant to give my kid an antibiotic for 21 days, (because it will mess with their stomach and gut bacteria) unless there is a good reason for it. A bite alone is not a good enough reason (for me).

Agreed. Lyme disease can have very significant consequences and there are also a host of other diseases you can get from a tick. Based on things i learned about Lyme during my hospital internship, I would not hesitate to give my child the antibiotics if i found a tick on them, especially if it was engorged.

Re: Found tick on DD

Interesting. I found at least one tick on all my kids already this summer as well as one on myself. I never thought to call the ped or my dr. We just removed them, circled the area in pen and kept an eye on it. I feel like the antibiotics is overkill and since your ped wasn't on board I wouldn't give them.

My ped pretty much gave the same advice. They do not prescribe antibiotics for every tick bite.

Did you find the tick on you?
If so, was it engorged already?

A couple of years ago, I found an engorged deer tick on myself (yuckkk). Urgent care prescribed just a couple of days of antibiotics, then tested the tick before they made a decision about the longer course of antibiotics.

I would ask the regular pediatrician to explain the discrepancy.

I worked for a pediatrician for three years and they did not prescribe antibiotics for tick bites in the absence of symptoms. I would definitely heed the advice of my pediatrician over an urgent care doctor. The dr you saw at Urgi was probably not even a ped (unless you went to PM peds). I would trust your ped, personally. Good luck to you!

I live out East. We have ticks on us regularly. I’ve already pulled them off my kids and myself this year. Actually I pulled one off my 2 year old this morning. We spray, but it’s inevitable for us. If we did antibiotics for tick bites someone would prob be on antibiotics all spring/summer long. I went on the antibiotics once a few years ago because I had a bullseye. Also, I’ve been told you can get the bullseye anywhere. Doesn’t have to be where the tick bite was. So just check her whole body.
