Racism in action

The owner of a Huntington Village restaurant posted this hateful, racist rant on Facebook yesterday - during a peaceful protest through the Village. I posted it in a Facebook restaurant group this morning and before it was taken down, (because God forbid people know that they are giving their money to a racist) among the many many posts stating that people would never go there again, I can say there were definitely way more than a handful of people responding that they couldn't wait to go there again, BECAUSE of the owner's video. It is beyond sad and disgraceful that so many of OUR NEIGHBORS still feel this way

And there is an AMAZING peaceful protest going on in front of the restaurant right now. The amount of support the protesters are getting is truly heartwarming. Hundreds of people have dropped off watermelons (watch the video) for the Peaceful Protest with Produce Chat Icon

And yes, as much as the owner is a complete a$$hole, the number of people saying they couldn't wait to eat there again - AFTER seeing his video, was also sickening. I just don't get how anyone could think the owner was in any way right or doing a good thing that should be supported. It really boggles my mind and makes me sick to know these are people we probably interact with every day

Re: Racism in action

There’s also this.....posting the article in case you don’t subscribe to newsday

Social media posts by two Freeport restaurant owners critical of marchers protesting police brutality have sparked area protests and led to a Change.org petition calling for the boycott of the restaurants.

More than 26,000 people had signed the petition by Saturday night, vowing to "cancel" Rachel's Waterside Grill, Nawlins Seafood Company, Bracco's Clam Bar and Captain Ben's — all on Freeport's Nautical Mile.

Ivan Sayles, co-owner of Rachel's and Nawlins Seafood, is under fire for a post on the "We Are Freeport" Facebook page in which he stated, "My two cents...But why aren't the cops in hats and bats shooting tear gas into the crowd beating the crap out of these rioters...As far as I'm concerned if you attack a police officer, a police car (with cops inside) or a police station you've attacked the sovereignty of the United States of America and deserve an appropriate reaction."

The post, which he has since deleted, got more than 300 comments, some in support but mostly in opposition, Sayles said in an interview Thursday.

Jon Bracco, a co-owner of Bracco's and Captain Ben's, was called out on Instagram and Facebook for reposting President Donald Trump's tweet in which he used the word "thugs" to describe Minneapolis residents protesting the death of George Floyd, who died after a police officer knelt on his neck. Many people shared screenshots of his posts in groups like "Black Long Island" — a Facebook page with nearly 28,000 followers.

Sayles said Thursday he stands by his comments. Bracco, who posted a lengthy apology, did not return messages seeking comment.

About 500 people gathered Tuesday on the Nautical Mile to denounce Sayles' and Bracco's posts, calling the men racist and promising to boycott their restaurants.

"Our money feeds these people. We support them and their restaurants and this is what they do?" said Arnold Caceres, 29, a Freeport resident who helped organize the protest. "They don't show any of that love and support back to us, that's why we need to be vocal and let them know they're losing our business."
Bracco posted his apology before the business' Instagram was deleted, saying "On emotional impulse I made some very insensitive and offensive posts recently ....I'm very sorry for the hurt I've caused."

Sayles said, "the whole thing has been blown out of proportion."

"Nothing that I said was racist. I don't think the majority of Americans are racist. There's a bad apple in every barrel," he said.

"Everyone agrees there should be justice for George Floyd but this is getting crazy...I got about 10 threats on FB messenger."

Even so, Sayles said he doesn't think the backlash will affect his business long-term, noting that some of the people who signed the Change.org petition are not locals.

"People in Georgia saying they'd never come to my restaurant. Those people weren't going to anyway," he said.

Re: Racism in action

Sayles quote talks about rioters not protesters.

So people are boycotting his restaurant because he thinks aggressive actions should be taken against rioters. Seems ridiculous if you ask me

Yes, this is what got me...
"As far as I'm concerned if you attack a police officer, a police car (with cops inside) or a police station you've attacked the sovereignty of the United States of America and deserve an appropriate reaction."

He never mentions anyone's race. He is pretty much saying ANYONE who does stuff like that deserves and appropriate reaction. And he's not wrong.

Ok, I was thinking the same thing about the quoted part. But I also haven't really followed this story or watched any of the Videos. Is there more to the story? I've heard a lot of people of all races share the same sentiment when it comes to rioters/looters.

Not sure, but here’s the link to the petition so we can read the verbiage for more info...not that I’m saying to sign, just to get more info...

I grew up in Queens, and I am shocked by how freaking racist (and sexist and antisemitic and anti-immigrants and everything else) Long Island is. I had no idea. I am overwhelmed.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I grew up in Bayside and Douglaston and felt this way too. Having lived in a few towns on LI now, I am just so disgusted with people.

Yep. I grew up in Auburndale/North Flushing. It is a beautiful, safe neighborhood that is so beautifully diverse. I teach in that exact area, and our school is a mix of every single race you could think of. Black, white, hispanic, asian, south asian. It is like the United Nations and I love it. If we could have afforded to buy a house there, we would never have moved to LI.
