I do believe there are ppl or groups of ppl that are taking advantage of others protesting (who are actually protesting for the right reasons) and deliberately causing chaos and destruction. It’s such a shame the real cause for these protests have been tainted with the vileness of those ppl and that initial cause have now been moved to the back burner. News don’t even show the good things happening in thesd protests but focus only on the bad. I hope everyone can see not all the protesters have ill and brutal intentions.
Someone mentioned in this thread that these type of conversations shouldn’t happen in this kind of forum, well I disagree. Yes, I hope all of us are doing more than just posting our thoughts here, but talking about it is also important. Sharing our views, having dialogues is what keep things relevant, it’s how exchange of ideas happen, it’s how we can learn from each other even if we don’t happen to agree on everything, even if these type of conversations are uncomfortable to have. They need to happen. We live in a world where we can’t just stay in our bubble and pretend things don’t happen outside our bubble. Let’s continue having hot-topic conversations in our lives, we're all intelligent adults that can handle that, at least I think we are.

Peaceful protests - completely fine and appropriate. Destroying businesses, houses of worship, and police stations? That is terrorism and unacceptable. There is no way to justify that. If you do, then very problem you are trying to fight will never be resolved.

Peaceful protests are a great way to show that change needs to be made. There needs to be change. I think Cuomo gave a good speech today and made some valid points.
I am watching the news right now and looters (not protesters) in LA are literally breaking into stores and stealing all the merchandise. It is just unbelievable. WTF is wrong with people.

Newark NJ, Predominantly black neighborhood, up and coming, had remained peaceful!
I know posters have commented that people on here condone this behavior.
I’m assuming I’m one of them. But what we are really condoning, is the right to feel outraged. The right to be pissed that your country has failed you over and over again for “Few Hundred of Fukn years”.
I won’t lose sight of what happened and the real issues with this country.

Government only reaches out to help minority communities when it affects everyone else. Blacks in NYC have always lived in horrific conditions. People who live in public housing have pleaded for years for more sanitary conditions. Peeling, lead based paint, overcrowding in buildings, poor air circulation in apartments, etc. Nothing is ever done. But now all of a sudden the state is stepping in to help these people. Why? Because now those conditions are causing covid to still spread in those communities.
So, it is pretty clear that nobody gives two shits about them until they need to make them stop getting sick so we can reopen. Why was nobody improving conditions years ago?
This forum is telling in and of itself. People will spew all about covid and how we must listen to scientists and data and how horrible we are because 100,000 people died and we are complaining about hair salons. But those same people never show up in threads that talk about things like this. So...say what you want. Many, many people only care about protecting certain lives. Covid is brand new, and is on its way into suppression thanks to measures we have taken. Great. Why do people care so much about this virus and not about this? The virus is so unknown. I hate that line. Racism and brutality is very well known in this country. And nobody gives a shit. But please, go out there and pat yourselves on the back and talk about what a great citizen you are because you locked yourself in your house for 3 months. I really, really hate people.
I am not sure what you mean by this post, but since I was one of the first people in one of the other threads to say a lot of the things you say here about here (listen to science, 100k people died, etc) I'll just share that I didn't post on here today because I was AT the protest in Plainview (which was wonderful BTW) and I will probably go to Mineola tomorrow depending on my workday. I also spent some time on my local moms group pushing back on some horribly racist comments. (It wasn't fun. I had to take breaks.) But ultimately, I had to keep at it, not so much because I thought I would change anyone's mind (lol) but because I wanted to stand up for people of color who live in my community who were harmed by reading what some morons wrote. So if you're trying to draw some kind of equivalency or correlation between two sets of beliefs, you are wrong to do so.

It's 1968 all over again. I am dismayed by the levels of violence, but at the same time can understand the frustration and angst of the same thing over and over again. Why does excessive force keep happening? I'm not a huge fan of Cuomo, but this afternoon when he mentioned the victims of the same violence by name, I was glad he said their names. I have no idea what to do in this situation, and it hurts.

So I read somewhere that the scumbag animal cop had something like 19 complaints against him And he was a known troublemaker? WHY WAS HE STILL WORKING!?? Why are the people paying his probably inflated salary ???? There are up and coming, younger, more well rounded people trying to get into the force all over the country. It’s time to move out the old dogs who won’t change their prospective, and bring in new blood with new ways of serving and protecting ALL people.
Maybe that’s what we should be contacting our representatives about? Changing The way they deal with real complaints on bad cops. They’ll always be bs complaints, so complaints that the IAB find to be accurate and true should be your red flag immediately. Found to be a racist pig? You’re out! You don’t get to have a community paid salary, the best health insurance you can get and a pension to live out your senior years comfortably. You’re done.
Protests can help open eyes. Riots just close them Back up. This has been going on for decades and nothing has changed. It’s like the definition of Insanity. Let’s try something else - together. Starting with how they handle multiple complaints against an officer. That should be #1. Then go from there.

I was just discussing this with my husband. There must have been a history of little to 0 consequences for the Minneapolis Police. It boggles my mind that not one of 4 officers thought selfishly "hay if this guy dies I'm going to lose my job and everything I have." Not 1 even tried to get the cop off of George Floyd's neck. They didn't care about the black man they were killing and they didn't care about themselves because normally nothing would have happened to them.
Who knows what else they have done and gotten away with.

I agree with you but that this needs to be addressed, but firing the bad cops isn’t going to changed the fabric of our nation. It’s systemic. We need to take a deep look ourselves and our own attitudes and stand together and demand change. First thing is need to make our voices heard by voting Trump out in November. He is the most vile, divisive, attention seeking narcissist in the planet. He taunts people with his tweets and people have been pushed to the limit. It clearly goes beyond just Donald Trump but it’s a good place to start...

There are a lot of "boys clubs" were they cover for each other and are almost rewarded for their behavior. Who knows why the leaders have such little integrity that they'd let their officers stay on after so many infractions. Nepotism? No conscience?
I haven't slept more than 3 hours all weekend.

This is absolutely true especially in the smaller town police departments out East. Southold Town PD is the worst. They protect their own friends and will not arrest people when it’s warranted.

I have no doubt that this is a really big part of the problem. But I think another part of the problem are really strong unions that make it almost impossible to get rid of a bad cop (or bad employee in many fields). I am not saying unions don’t serve a purpose, but they also can serve to protect those who don’t deserve it

That's all I ever hear. Doesn't there have to be a starting point? Everything starts somewhere. Step 1, get rid of bad cops so people in power cant kill whoever they feel like without incident.

I don't blame the president. I didn't blame the last few and I don't blame him either. But that's not what this is about. We had a black president and the same issues. Higher gov't can't fix it alone. Local Gov't is the key. Once they all agree, it goes up the chain to the top. Until they change, we will be living in this vicious cycle forever.
I feel like I have been talking in circles. Maybe just falling on deaf ears
