Protests

Theres a difference between protesting and rioting. I stand behind peaceful protests to get a point across to the world, to others and stand for a cause and movement. I do not support any act of violence, destruction or theft in the name of anyone or anything.

“The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth" MLK

I support the protests 100%. I will never understand what it's like to be discriminated against because of my skin color. I will never pretend to understand. But I will always be a friend, an ally and a fighter alongside my fellow humans.

Protests

I wouldn't be surprised if NYC has a curfew tomorrow night. Minneapolis & LA ordered everyone in their homes from 8 pm- 6 am. Sadly, this will accomplish nothing. In another few weeks, everyone will have moved on to the next story. See how fast people forgot about Covid after what happened last Monday? People will forget about this too...and the vicious cycle continues.

My friend's DH is NYPD. He was off today, but goes in tomorrow night. She is definitely terrified for her husband as he goes into work tomorrow. One could argue that black men feel that way all the time. But, I don't really know what the answer is.
I understand why they become violent during the protests. Because there are bad cops out there, we have seen them the last few nights. Shoving a peaceful protester to the ground, injuring her to the point where she needed to be taken to a hospital. No reason for it.
I do not understand the desecrating of churches, banks, and restaurants. In Minnesota they were just running through Target and grabbing anything they could get their hands on. A stolen television will not bring justice to George Floyd. However, there were just as many whites doing it. Which bothers me a lot. Whites need to productively join the cause. Don't exploit the suffering of black people by breaking into Target and grabbing electronics. That is not helpful. It makes you an asshole.
I don't have any answers. I am not sure how to ever get equality and peace in this world.

100%!! White people need to support our black communities for sure but taking a 65" TV or 2 living room lamps from Target is not the way to do it! WTF is wrong with these people? I'm watching the news and its WHITE people acting like total animals. How is that supporting the black community?

Also, the media needs to stop giving these people a platform. A white hipster tap dancing on a NYPD cruiser does not need to be on TV. All it does is turn people off to the situation. Also, it makes people fearful of participating due to violence when really the black community needs all of our support right now and always.

EXACTLY. I don’t get how anyone, and yes there are a few on here who believe it is ok to violently riot. Protesting, yes. Stealing and destroying places, no. I don’t care what color you are, ALL lives matter and if you pay attention, it is not just black people involved in the looting and destruction. These are just animals who think violence is the answer. If you agree with them, your morals are in the gutter right with them.

I think we should be protesting. Blacks have suffered enough and it’s time to stand strong. Can’t be silent anymore...

So burning down a police station and looting and rioting is the answer? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes. Revolution isn’t pretty. But peaceful protests have done nothing. I’d say this sends a strong message that this won’t be tolerated anymore.

Wow. So destroying where you live and work is the answer.

Well let's see, the scumbag POS police officer got to go home to his family after MURDERING a man in broad daylight. No arrest. He got to kill a man and go home like it was all in days work.

It took THREE days of rioting for that POS to be arrested and charged. So it would certainly seem that rioting was the answer. Had he been arrested on the scene, much of this could've been avoided. But as usual, it's hate and racism before justice.

If you're more outraged over the rioting rather than the fact that an unarmed, handcuffed black man was pinned to the ground by THREE officers while one pressed his knee into his neck until he was DEAD, then you need to check your moral compass.

When peaceful doesn't work, what recourse is left?

I never said he shouldn’t have been arrested on the spot nor not outraged over what happened. My point is innocent people are losing their businesses and jobs. How would you feel if your life savings in your business went up in flames and people were looting everything you worked for, for something YOU didn’t even do?

How would you feel if every day of your life you were oppressed, demonized, and treated like less then?

How would you feel if it was someone in your family being held down on the pavement crying out until they died?

Try and understand WHY this is where things end up. Try and understand that when you're NEVER heard and NEVER treated as an equal you resort to rioting. You don't have to support but at least understand it.

Nope I will never understand someone looting, destroying things to get their point across. It will be ok to let them burn your home or come in and steal all your possessions just because you are white like the cop? Does that make any sense?

So disgusting. But I did see a lot of heroes last night too. A line of protesters shielded a Target in Brooklyn from looters. There are so many protesters who know the proper way to go about this. They are angry and hurt, but they know burning down the city where you live and stealing things from a store will never, ever get your point across.
My heart really went out to the mayor of Atlanta last night. She was in tears, begging everyone to stop. The Rodney King riots in 1992 accomplished jack shit. These will accomplish about the same.
I am so angry for black people. But I am even more angry at these asshole white people who are destroying property. Way to pretend like you care about black people idiots. And people wonder why the white race sucks. Because they do crap like this, and I saw blacks pleading with them to stop. You aren't helping them, you are making it worse for them! Stop!!!

Re: Protests

Is it ok that law enforcement is deliberately targeting journalists with violence in the middle of this mayhem? I wonder if that has anything to do with the president's rhetoric. I notice everybody is conveniently leaving out a big part of the equation - the man at the very top continuously stoking the flames of racism and destruction and calling for violence and calling for more police brutality. But, I don't expect to hear much about that given that many on this forum support him and plan to vote for this destruction in November. But even YOU cannot deny this fool's role in the destruction. So, please don't act surprised or disgusted that the country is one big fire ball. But don't worry ladies, I'm sure your guy will find a way to excuse the white supremacists' role in the destruction because they're just "very good people."

I keep seeing FB posts about random stacks of bricks laying around the protest areas. I asked someone I know (that was protesting in NYC) and she said she saw a random stack of pavers in an area with no construction. Like it was conveniently placed there for people to pick up and throw them. I find it hard to believe someone would waste money like that. Maybe it's true though.

I participated in a lot of protests when I was younger and right out of high school. We were always told to keep it peaceful or no one will take you seriously. You just become the enemy when you destroy things. I see that being true to an extent. Even the news is just talking about what's been destroyed lately and nothing about the cause.

I just wanted to add that they never arrest someone of authority (cop, lawmaker, etc.) immediately. They investigate first and days (or even months) later the arrest occurs. That's always the way it is. The chain of command takes longer than a civilian arrest. Also, people of authority usually have good attorneys and they don't want to risk them getting off on a technicality. For example the Suffolk County Chief of Police that beat the crap out of that guy a few years back. They didn't just take the guys word for it. It took a long time for that guy to get justice and he was white. So for anyone to say nothing was done until the riots started, I'm sorry but that's just not how it works.

I don't think may here support him. If they do they probably won't say. I can't imagine anyone supporting him after this though. If so that's truly disgusting. I have lost friends and have deep divide now within my own familh because of him He's a brilliant manipulator and his followers will go to the end of the Earth to follow him rather than admit they made a mistake. The mayor stated that all arrests were from out of towners. Groups are purposely traveling to these protests and destroying property to incite a race riot.

Because Trump is blameless? Do you really believe that he's innocent? Did Obama call for police brutality? Also, Obama is so 2016.

This has been happening as far back as I can remember. I was young at the time, but I remember the L.A. riots and all the spillover. It's been happening for too long.

Not everyone likes Trump but still don’t blame everything on him. Easier to put the blame on someone else than the people looting and destroying other innocent people’s lives. If you support these people then you are just as bad as them.
