I think it will delay opening because if there is a spike in covid cases due to people gathering to protest, then of course it will delay things.
1 person from that pool party in the Ozarks, Missouri already tested positive..thats one cluster thats now potentially infected...we wont see the spike until 2 weeks from now when case numbers increase...so ye, we are so fu#&%ed now because violent protesters are going to cause case spikes.

Damn that George Floyd for dying, he’s going to mess up our numbers now.Chat Icon Chat Icon

What da holy fuq am I reading on this thread!!

You dont need to twist my words like that. There is a way to protest without having to destroy property and flout lockdown rules. Chat Icon

I didn’t twist your words hun. Your post is pretty clear.

You need to understand that for some people the only lives that matter are those lost to Covid.
All people see when they see these protesters is OMG they aren't 6 feet apart! Omg!
Their cause doesn't matter. Only lockdown rules matter.
Perhaps if we took the causes these people are protesting for as seriously as we took a virus, we'd be in a better place as a nation right now....

Oh, THAAAAT'S why we're fukced! Ok, sorry I had no idea. I thought we were discussing the brutal public murder of an innocent black man and the subsequent mayhem that has taken place because of the disgusting actions of a so-called officer of law enforcement. You're right. Protesters should wait until there's a vaccine before they protest the death of George Floyd.

If you watch this without crying, you have no soul.

What if this was your dad, husband, brother or son.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nAHo4zkaiU0&bpctr=1590796815

This was no accident. This was a human delighting in the murder of another one while his fellow cop aided and abetted. He had 1,000 chances to get up and make another choice. Once the person is down and not fighting, you cuff them and send them to jail. Death penalty is a complex process for judge and jury not an ignorant beat cop.

This brings a bad name to all cops. They should even be more angry. It spits in the face of our real hero’s.

I’m disgusted today. I don’t think this can go on as this isn’t a world that’s worth living in.

I just don’t understand why he’d put his knee on George’s neck and for that many minutes?!? Supposedly that’s not even what officers are taught to do. And why, why in the world wouldn’t any of the other officers tell him anything?!? Why wouldn’t they alert him on what he was doing?!?

Pure, relentless HATE and discrimination.

As for the burning of buildings and other damaged property, it's monetary and can never amount to this mans life and the grief of his family and friends.

All of it makes me so sick and everyone I know cannot stop crying. May God help us all.

Corporations and businesses have insurance. People should stop prioritizing capitalism over human life. In BK (where I have immediate family), police were posted up by the hundreds at Barclays. Waiting for a fight...waiting to prevent? How do you look at it? People I know in real life who were there giving a completely different account of what the media is showing.

You can't get a life back, and one that was so senselessly taken as part of a long line of violence towards black bodies. I am sickened and angry and holding space for my black and brown friends. They are not OK. They are not OK.

Corporations and business have insurance? That’s your reply?
Lose your livelihood and wait for Insurance to kick in to be able to feed your family. See how that feels.

The riots make zero sense and it’s wrong. You are punishing the innocent. Wrong wrong wrong. Nothing will make it right.
Insurance ... that response is fuking laughable.

Why do you think solely in terms of money and not in terms of why this is happening and not the deeper issues. Why does it only come back to money and businesses? I take it you're a sbo but this way of thinking is kind of toxic. If you're not able to see that these protestors have done everything possible to be heard in every way white America says is "the right way" and still they are being killed, but all you think about is a random bar and grill you'll never go to in a state you'll probably never visit, that's weird to me.

These aren’t protesters. These are rioters taking advantage of the situation to get a new TV. Get that straight. Robbing target won’t bring justice.

I’m not only looking at money. But it’s a HUGE issue as well. Yes. I am a sbo, are you? Maybe if you were, you’d see that side of this. Protest day and night. Get POSITIVE attention towards the issue at hand. When you riot, you become the problem not the solution. If you think stealing and burning down property is totally acceptable , then offer up your home or place of work for the cause. Think about it before saying all I care about is money. All I think about is a random bar and grill? That bar and grill is owned by a man & his wife. Who have 4 small children. He is also a firefighter. He saved everything to open this business for his family and future generations to come. It was taken from his because he did what? What did he, himself do to George Flynn or his family? He didn’t do a thing. He was probably outraged like the rest of the country over this blatant murder. And you’re right, I probably won’t ever go there. I don’t have a reason to visit Minneapolis anytime soon. But seeing his turmoil , knowing what it is to work so hard and do everything the right way, the pride you feel when making a living to support yourself and your family non your own ... I wanted to help him in any way I could. Because I can relate.

I am 100% behind protesting for a better world. I am 100% for making change through government by exercising my right to vote and hope the people I put in place locally actually do something to better where I live. People only worry about higher gov’t. They don’t do shit. It’s your local people who can help make real change.

I wish this world was different. I wish people would stop teaching hate. Because of skin color, religion, politics. You would thing a worldwide pandemic would make everyone stop. Just stop. We are the same. We love the same, we hurt the same. I won’t pretend to know the answer. I have no solution other to say I hope the new generations and those after kNow better.

I just realize my post was meant for the Phase 2 Delayed opening thread which now explains the snide remark.’ But even so, why does it have to be either/or? All lives matter, regardless of at the hands of terrible police brutality or the virus!!! We need to stop this blaming behavior! Enough!

There are some really woke people on this thread...and then there are those who have been pretending the inequality doesn't exist, so they can feel good about their own privilege. I see you everyday. I see your little cliques, your friend groups without one person of color, the looks you give when my family walks onto Nickerson Beach or takes a walk through Garden City or RVC. The people who stare at my husband because they think he's a 55 yr old thug, yet has worked for the city for over 30 years and has monthly meeting with the Mayor. Or even better when I'm followed in Neiman Marcus, yet the person who is probably stealing is able to get away with it because they don't "look" the part. Don't worry, I have been raised to know you very well. I have seen your stares for over 50 year, I know your assumptions. Just look deeper into you own soul, do you think you're better than me just because your skin lacks melanin? Because that's the only real difference. That's it. I have degrees, a successful career, married with children, friends of all races, creeds, sexual orientation. I go to church, donate when I see children with cancer or dogs being abused, and I have really good kids who love to ride bikes, take long walks and go to the beach. Just look deeper have empathy, and be a better human. Have a wonderful day, Im going to lay in the sun, and yes I do that too.

Re: Protests

What can we do?

We can argue all day on LIF, but that isn’t going to make change.

What can we do ? Protesting peacefully opens eye for sure. But it obviously isn’t stopping people from hate. It saddens me to see the world we are living in. Still. It’s 2020 and people are being killed because of their skin color. Families are torn apart over politics. Women are still being mistreated in general. What a world for children to grow in. For us to grow old in (if we are lucky enough to make it)

I’m sorry to those who are discriminated against daily. I hope you know there are people who stand beside you and will stand up for you when given the chance. Not everyone is a dic*.

See what you're missing here is a key component. You don't understand the pain, because you don't understand systematic racism, white privilege and oppression. I wish I could give my black skin to you and your child, for one week. Walk in my shoes, especially in Long Island. Where there are places I want to go but don't, because I will get stared at like I don't belong. (And I can name a ton of places, trust me). Or try to look at a house for sale, and the neighbors look at me with the "we don't want black people living here". Or send my child on an interview for a job, where I know they may be rejected, not based on their education or resume, but because they just don't want a black person for the job. Please stop acting like this is all so sad for the business owners...I understand it is, I do, but they have some things that have been denied to people of color for so long, and that is painful and sometimes the pain can no longer be taken.
I don't have a solution to any problem, but I can say most of you wouldn't switch places with me ever...you wouldn't want the baggage I carry everyday. Have some empathy. Have some real conversation with black people. Watch a damn movie, read some books, something about how the system has beaten us down for generations. And Stop commenting on things you have no way of understanding. Just be empathetic.
Please Im not being harsh, I live in LI, I have seen it all, and it has been a hard life, yet I am educated with a very good salary and I can understand what people are going through. That pain is gut wrenching.

I read a moving piece written by a black man on fb. He writes about how he takes daily walks around the neighborhood with his daughter and their fluffy little dog and he fears for his life going for a walk alone. All people in his community would see is a 6'2 black man wearing a mask and he could lose his life for takinga walk. They wouldn't see an accomplished man, a loving husband, a devoted father, a little league coach, just a 6'2 black man. So he only goes for walks when his daughter can accompany him so people don't perceive him as a threat because they can see he's a family man. His 8 year old daughter is essentially a body guard. 98% of people that post on this forum will never understand that experience and will never be able to walk a mile in your shoes, myself included.

Re: Protests

Why stop at 60 years of oppression? Keep going. Go back further. It's a problem as old as time. Look at pictures of the mutilation of Emmett Till in his casket if your stomach is strong enough. Or the lashings. Or the beatings. Or the lynchings.

This is our history. It's who we are in all our glory. This is our past. This is our present. This is our future. Own it. Don't pretend it doesn't exist just because it will never directly affect you or yours.

Protests

Government only reaches out to help minority communities when it affects everyone else. Blacks in NYC have always lived in horrific conditions. People who live in public housing have pleaded for years for more sanitary conditions. Peeling, lead based paint, overcrowding in buildings, poor air circulation in apartments, etc. Nothing is ever done. But now all of a sudden the state is stepping in to help these people. Why? Because now those conditions are causing covid to still spread in those communities.
So, it is pretty clear that nobody gives two shits about them until they need to make them stop getting sick so we can reopen. Why was nobody improving conditions years ago?
This forum is telling in and of itself. People will spew all about covid and how we must listen to scientists and data and how horrible we are because 100,000 people died and we are complaining about hair salons. But those same people never show up in threads that talk about things like this. So...say what you want. Many, many people only care about protecting certain lives. Covid is brand new, and is on its way into suppression thanks to measures we have taken. Great. Why do people care so much about this virus and not about this? The virus is so unknown. I hate that line. Racism and brutality is very well known in this country. And nobody gives a shit. But please, go out there and pat yourselves on the back and talk about what a great citizen you are because you locked yourself in your house for 3 months. I really, really hate people.

I don't understand how people don't understand that BAD COPS GET GOOD COPS KILLED! So, I know the brotherhood of police like to protect their own, but good cops need to police bad cops. Don't defend and protect the bad apples because they will literally get you killed.

Because after the flames comes the fire.

Because boot straps and get a job, but hold on not with the help of affirmative action because that's racist, and stop being a welfare queen everybody knows that bailout really belongs to billionaires, so technically, black person you're stealing from a billionaire when you use that welfare money to buy your illegitimate kids food, and get a Goddamned education, just not at my kid's school because I pay dearly for my child's right to be educated in a "performing" district, and you need good teachers so you can break the cycle but my God I would never want to teach in a poor school in a minority area, and these children need male authority figures present in their lives, but hang just hang on while he serves his time for dealing marijuana in 1993, and omg these people are so diseased, just look at the rate of death from preventable disease, don't they exercise, they should jog more but not in my neighborhood, and this awful cycle of poverty needs to end they really should look to better themselves, but not next door to me please, and boot straps and bootstraps and bootstraps.

it’s money, it’s always money, and that is really sad. The government doesn’t want to spend the money. There are systemic ways keeping people poor. If you don’t have access to a grocery store or space where you can put bulk items, you are paying more for the same item. So what I can get in my suburban home costs less than what someone else can get because they live in the city. Is that fair, or just, no. So when I keep paying less for things I can save more. There are many ways people are kept poor. Then when the government says we have no money to help people who live in high rise apartments and they cannot save as easily, others will say why don’t you save. As if it is a personal responsibility issue, when the reality is they are kept down. It is a vicious cycle.

You want black people to stop? Stop being mad and angry at a country that has oppressed them? The pandemic is a separate issue. If anything, the pandemic has highlighted the inequalities. I understand to an extent how you feel about businesses and livelihoods but there comes a point where people look downright foolish to continue denying what is blatantly staring us in the face.

Where on earth did I say I wanted BLack people to stop? I called for humans to stop this bs of hate. You would think after what we’ve all went through together as the human race, worldwide, everyone would just stop. Stop the hate. Try reading what I wrote before pointing your finger. I can tell you’re hot right now, which is why I’m trying my best to clarify. Re read what I wrote if you even care to

Protests

I've been on LIF for a long time, but I don't post much. I commend you all for the open dialogue and for having hard conversations. All I'm asking is to take a deep look at yourselves sometimes, the places you live, the opportunities that come your way, the way people look at you and treat you, and then imagine if it would be different if you were a different race. I remember my boss looking at my kids class picture and asking me why their class had so many black children? I told him I chose to send my kids to a private school where there were more kids like them. So they didn't have to feel excluded or different. Then I asked him, if his kids went to school with any black kids, and he said no...but he never even thought about it because his neighborhood doesn't have any black families. He lived in his neighborhood for over 50 years, and no black children were ever in school with his kids, and this was on LI. I found that just insane. It's times like that, when I realize we are living in 2 different worlds. He couldn't even understand my life, nor did he try. Like I say, we can do better if we just have empathy for others.
And on a side note, I chose a predominately black school when my children were little because they had to grow up strong and proud of their blackness and not have it stripped away. Now they are at top private schools where they are the minority, and are called the N word often by the way. But they know how to deflect and rise above, because I built them up when they were younger. Have a great day! Good convo!.

Thank you for sharing your story. Chat Icon Long Island is one of the most segregated places in the country. It's sad how little true diversity there is here.

Re: Protests

I do have to say however slow the progression may be, I look at the protestors and see many white faces, and different races. That wasn’t the case 15 years ago and it gives me so much hope.

ETA: it’s everyones fight!
