I will always support anyone's right to peaceful protest. I will never support violence. Burning down the city of Minneapolis will do absolutely nothing for the cause.
I actually would join a protest over this. It is vile and sickening what happened on Monday. My stomach turns thinking about that poor man's final moments. I would not be opposed to putting on a mask and joining. But not when they become violent. Violence never accomplishes anything.

All of this.

Also wanted to add to those who can “justify” what’s happening. If that was your town or your family business being burned down for nothing you did personally, I think you would feel differently.

Maybe being a small business owner makes me feel it a little more. When I see the destruction of people’s livelihoods. Jobs lost. Neighborhoods in ruin. Doing that won’t give George his life back. It’ll
just give some looters free shit

Ofcourse I would feel differently, and I do feel horrible for all those effected by the collateral damage.

But the same goes the other way around.. if your son/brother/uncle/husband was murdered like that, wouldn’t you feel differently?

This isn’t something that just happened for the first time ever. We, have to sit down and have talks with our young males because we are terrified of them being killed or racially profiled by cops. This isn’t something that is made up for television series and movies. I was actually a part of this conversation with my cousin two weeks ago.

And trust me I’m not anti cops or think they should be disrespected. I actually feel bad for those great, brave policemen/women that now have to deal with another crappy situation during this already difficult time.

ETA: Hofstra worded it better, justifying the anger and rage. I would never want to be a part of rioting or looting.

I couldn’t imagine how I’d feel if it were my family member. I was crying watching part of the video(couldn’t watch the whole thing) and I don’t even know the man. I was also crying while watching the man from the sports bar crying because I felt his pain and wanted to reach through my
Phone and hug him.

I’d like to say I wouldn’t go rob and burn down autozone if my brother was killed though. I can never say never because unless you’re ina. Situation you don’t know for sure. But I’d say I’m 99% sure that wouldn’t help with the loss of my brother. Now put me in a room w the piece of shit animal who murdered him? I would probably rip him to shreds with my own hands. Wrong , sure. But I’m a big believer in and eye for an eye.

I agree with everything you said. I can’t watch the videos because it gets me so emotional as well. It’s a bunch of mixed emotions. I can’t even imagine what all these people who are being impacted firsthand are going through. It makes me so sad and disgusted.

If you watch this without crying, you have no soul.

What if this was your dad, husband, brother or son.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nAHo4zkaiU0&bpctr=1590796815

This was no accident. This was a human delighting in the murder of another one while his fellow cop aided and abetted. He had 1,000 chances to get up and make another choice. Once the person is down and not fighting, you cuff them and send them to jail. Death penalty is a complex process for judge and jury not an ignorant beat cop.

This brings a bad name to all cops. They should even be more angry. It spits in the face of our real hero’s.

I’m disgusted today. I don’t think this can go on as this isn’t a world that’s worth living in.

I have a 16 yr old son, he is so sweet and kind, he prays every night before he goes to bed, he has never raised his voice to his older sisters, he is a straight A student, football player, and kisses me goodnight every night...and he's black. And if that was him on the TV, if I had to see him die like that, pleading for his life, pleading for his mom, saying he was going to die...well I wouldn't care about the casualties of war. It would be WAR. This has got to end...that could have been my son. Maybe not your son, but mine.

I just don’t understand why he’d put his knee on George’s neck and for that many minutes?!? Supposedly that’s not even what officers are taught to do. And why, why in the world wouldn’t any of the other officers tell him anything?!? Why wouldn’t they alert him on what he was doing?!?

I'll be honest when I say I can't watch the video because it makes me too upset. I can't even see the thumbnail because it's too disturbing. It looks like the scumbag used a knee because it's a twist on Colin Kaepernick's "taking a knee" as a form of silent protest.

Re: Protests

These protests were peaceful in the beginning, and the protesters were met with tear gas and rubber bullets while 100 cops in riot gear surrounded the thug's home so he could sleep peacefully. The scumbag was under review 18 TIMES for use of excessive force and inappropriate behavior. Around the country there have been peaceful protests for decades and shit doesn't change. In Louisville there's currently a protest for the killing of Breonna Taylor who was killed by officers IN HER SLEEP. In her home. In her sleep. At thr same time that Minneapolis burns down to the ground. There is something desperately and disturbingly wrong with this picture.

Colin Kaepernick took a knee as a peaceful stand against police brutality against the black community and half the country lost their minds.

I may not agree with burning a city to the ground, but I have enough empathy to understand the anger and the frustration of a system that's stacked against you. I'll also never know the feeling of watching my brother/father/husband's last moments on television taking his last breaths as he gasps for air. I can't even watch that video as a stranger, I cannot imagine a mother having to watch and hear her son cry out for her as he lays on the ground dying. It's sick and cruel and evil and barbaric. And it's just one story out of many.

SADLY, PEACE DOESN'T WORK. When the civil rights leader who led peaceful protest is assassinated, it's your first clue that peace doesn't work.

I think we should be protesting. Blacks have suffered enough and it’s time to stand strong. Can’t be silent anymore...

So burning down a police station and looting and rioting is the answer? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes. Revolution isn’t pretty. But peaceful protests have done nothing. I’d say this sends a strong message that this won’t be tolerated anymore.

Wow. So destroying where you live and work is the answer.

Maybe they should storm the capital with AK47s. Oh wait, that’s only ok for white people. Those fine people, white supremicists.

I cannot blame anyone for burning that police station. I feel bad for the local businesses and agree in urban areas it’s likely “their own neighborhood” but where the F were the police tonight in Minneapolis? This destruction is on their shoulders.

Well let's see, the scumbag POS police officer got to go home to his family after MURDERING a man in broad daylight. No arrest. He got to kill a man and go home like it was all in days work.

It took THREE days of rioting for that POS to be arrested and charged. So it would certainly seem that rioting was the answer. Had he been arrested on the scene, much of this could've been avoided. But as usual, it's hate and racism before justice.

If you're more outraged over the rioting rather than the fact that an unarmed, handcuffed black man was pinned to the ground by THREE officers while one pressed his knee into his neck until he was DEAD, then you need to check your moral compass.

When peaceful doesn't work, what recourse is left?

Pure, relentless HATE and discrimination.

As for the burning of buildings and other damaged property, it's monetary and can never amount to this mans life and the grief of his family and friends.

All of it makes me so sick and everyone I know cannot stop crying. May God help us all.

Not destroying things at least and they are doing it here in NY and plan a protest today in Hicksville. This didn’t happen here and there is no reason to put police cars on fire not even where it happened. Looting is not the answer either. I get the protesting and MLK protested and didn’t
have to get violent and loot. I get being mad as I think it is horrible what this police officer did, never condoned him or the others with him at all. I don’t condone people acting like animals with no morals and ethics to destroy innocent people’s livelihood. Business owners are standing at their doors with guns for looters. People are losing their businesses and people are losing their jobs. What did Target do to George? Nothing but these animals think it is ok to loot and burn it down. These are not just black people getting involved. Be angry, be very angry how this was handled. DON’T ruin other people’s lives who didn’t do anything wrong but live in the same town OR in another state. It is disgusting and I am scared for this country that people can’t protest in a civil manner without destroying things.

Yes there was supposed to be a curfew and I have a friend who lives there and said they were still looting. Why? Get the national guard in there. You want to play with fire (unfortunately literally) then you will get burned.

I never said he shouldn’t have been arrested on the spot nor not outraged over what happened. My point is innocent people are losing their businesses and jobs. How would you feel if your life savings in your business went up in flames and people were looting everything you worked for, for something YOU didn’t even do?

See what you're missing here is a key component. You don't understand the pain, because you don't understand systematic racism, white privilege and oppression. I wish I could give my black skin to you and your child, for one week. Walk in my shoes, especially in Long Island. Where there are places I want to go but don't, because I will get stared at like I don't belong. (And I can name a ton of places, trust me). Or try to look at a house for sale, and the neighbors look at me with the "we don't want black people living here". Or send my child on an interview for a job, where I know they may be rejected, not based on their education or resume, but because they just don't want a black person for the job. Please stop acting like this is all so sad for the business owners...I understand it is, I do, but they have some things that have been denied to people of color for so long, and that is painful and sometimes the pain can no longer be taken.
I don't have a solution to any problem, but I can say most of you wouldn't switch places with me ever...you wouldn't want the baggage I carry everyday. Have some empathy. Have some real conversation with black people. Watch a damn movie, read some books, something about how the system has beaten us down for generations. And Stop commenting on things you have no way of understanding. Just be empathetic.
Please Im not being harsh, I live in LI, I have seen it all, and it has been a hard life, yet I am educated with a very good salary and I can understand what people are going through. That pain is gut wrenching.

So your answer is peaceful protests, got it. What has peaceful protesting done for blacks in this country in the last 70 years? Colin Kaepernick was annihilated for his non violence approach by taking a knee. You seem to like arguing and twisting words, so I will reiterate. NEVER said violence and burning buildings is the answer, but I have seen this coming for years! I honestly can’t see how anyone is surprised. You can only be provoked so long. I don’t know how I would be behaving if I lived in that community. I’d like to say I’d handle myself with dignity and respect and not vandalize others, but I also don’t know what it feels like to live in a society where you are oppressed, lack opportunities, and are constantly fighting for you life in a society that was structured to keep you down. I am WHITE so I don’t know how it feels. I will tell you my husband is black and my children are black it pains me to have to prepare them to live in a society that is going to condemn them and judge them. My innocent babies who only know the difference in skin color as that, just skin color. I live in a VERY cultural diverse drown. We get a bad rap but there is such a strong sense of community here which makes me love it. We need to restructure our society or things aren’t going to work. We need to stop being so segregated and Long Island is the worst. I. think you should spend some time in some low income, impoverished ,black areas and get to know these people and their struggles. It’s easy to judge when you are here in some cookie cutter hallmark TV movie town and the biggest concern what the other ***** on the PTA said at the soccer game. There is real suffering going and real socioeconomic disparities. I can’t watch it anymore Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Perfectly and eloquently stated.

I just don’t understand why he’d put his knee on George’s neck and for that many minutes?!? Supposedly that’s not even what officers are taught to do. And why, why in the world wouldn’t any of the other officers tell him anything?!? Why wouldn’t they alert him on what he was doing?!?

Pure, relentless HATE and discrimination.

As for the burning of buildings and other damaged property, it's monetary and can never amount to this mans life and the grief of his family and friends.

All of it makes me so sick and everyone I know cannot stop crying. May God help us all.

Corporations and businesses have insurance. People should stop prioritizing capitalism over human life. In BK (where I have immediate family), police were posted up by the hundreds at Barclays. Waiting for a fight...waiting to prevent? How do you look at it? People I know in real life who were there giving a completely different account of what the media is showing.

You can't get a life back, and one that was so senselessly taken as part of a long line of violence towards black bodies. I am sickened and angry and holding space for my black and brown friends. They are not OK. They are not OK.
