If kids do not go back to school in September-
Am I the only one considering leaving their job if kids do not go back to school in September? I would assume they would extend the $600 pandemic assistance if kids are not in school. I don’t even care if they don’t at this point.
I just can’t both work and teach all my kids and do my normal household things like laundry, cleaning, food shopping etc. my kids are glued to their iPads just so I can work. We rush thru school and don’t do half the work.
I flipped out earlier this week and told my boss that if I hear school is remote in the fall I’m done. It’s bad enough I don’t know what I’m doing this summer now that camp is cancelled. I literally have no family to babysit.
Am I overreacting like my boss said? Or are other working moms in the same boat??

What happens if you leave due to childcare during the pandemic? I thought you are entitled to the $600?
It’s not even about the money at this point. It is my mental health. I’m losing it. I’m having breakdowns because my kids aren’t getting the attention they need. My work isn’t getting the attention it needs. My house is a disaster. I’m just drowning right now.

I don't think that's how unemployment works...i think you have to be laid off and prove you are looking for work ..even now.

Can you maybe get a tutor to help like someone else mentioned?

They did pass something that entitles you to money if you have to leave your employer to care for a school aged child. It’s not through unemployment though, and it’s not Ongoing. I’d have to look it up

Yes I am absolutely thinking about this. I have a profoundly disabled child and this is getting to be too much. I pray every day to be laid off. I think if schools are closed I will have to have a frank conversation with my boss about what I can do and hope she sees where I am going with this and lays me off.
For the record I don’t know if schools are safe. Masks and social distancing can make almost anything safe...but neither is a possibility in schools. The DOE lost a lot of aides and safety officers to Covid. Children don’t get as sick, but are they vectors? We don’t really know.
It’s all just one big bucket of suck.

Just a few things to keep in mind...if you leave, is there any chance to go back? How hard will it be to reenter your field in the future?
How will you be financially without your salary and benefits?
I know things are stressful right now, but don't make a permanent decision based on a temporary problem, kwim?
Eventually things will go back to normal...if you quit your job now, you might regret it a year from now.
But you have to do what's best for you.
Just don't make a decision when your emotions are high

This. And I carry all the benefits at my job(DH works for a body shop and they don’t offer benefits) so even if I wanted to, I couldn’t

I was going to suggest this. Someone at my job is starting family leave on Monday for the exact same reasons you mention. Her husband is also getting a huge project at work for the summer (starting 6/1) and while home won’t really be available to help with the kids. That was her final straw. I believe the leave is 12 weeks and she said she will assess after that.

Many families are having these thoughts right now but I am hoping we will have some type of answer by June 15th on the status of school openings in September. I say 6/15 because I read an article some where that this is the day many school leaders will meet (or have met) to review data and come to a decision on risk levels of students/staff for re-opening.
I doubt schools will not open, S.Korea and France has already opened schools and they have testing/tracing systems in place for those areas so can manage it. I believe NY will definitely have testing and tracing procedures in place by August, and we all know being on an extended lockdown is devastating. We have to open schools in order to move forward. What they are discussing now is modified schedules and how to ensure staff, students and faculty can be safe while social distancing...they may have to consider in class sessions only 1 or 2 days a week, or some type of hybrid school day (half days).
I work for a large employer and we had a meeting this week where many managers expressed the same thoughts here on LIF, and the CEOs all said they will work with employees and will consider revising work hours to accommodate whatever schools are going to do...so dont stress out because employers know that workers cant function properly if kids cant return to school.

I think in NY, Gov Cuomo said they will look at in July (no specific date), but basically each district (?) has to submit their plan to the state on how they would return and they will review and determine if will be approved. A lot of pushback on this since no guidance has been given, just told to submit plans and state will decide.

I wouldn't hold onto that June 15th date. It's almost three months before school starts - there is no way they are going to have a set in stone answer or even any answer at that point. I would consider it lucky if we knew what was going on by Mid August,

I agree. Also the extra $600 was only approved through July, so it is going to end before September unless the Congress authorizes its extension and Trump signs it into law. Summer school is going to be virtual, I don’t expect school to start in the fall like normal. I expect some kind of hybrid situation with virtual education for many classes.

No I wont quit. One because i cant financially and 2 I dont want to!
Its hard but honestly school work has been pushed to side before my job.
My kids teachers are not doing anything so if I dont have the time I dont do it!
As for the $600 a week that is a federal package and as of now it will not be extended past July 31st.
There is regular UI you can get but thats capped at $504 depending how much you make.
there us PUA which you can qualify for which is just like UI but for people who dont qualify for regular UI.
however you can not get UI if you quit and you wont qualify for PUA if your job allows you to work from home child care or no child care
ETA: Have you considered having someone come in for a few hours during the day?
I have been considering this. I am already use to paying for aftercare for both of my kids thinking if school is no open maybe getting someone to come in for a few hours a day or every other day to help with them.

I had a similar meltdown to my boss on Tuesday. He provided me with a lot of reassurance as far as my job is concerned. Logistically though, this is a nightmare. I work all the time...work work, school work, house work. It's non stop. I can't leave my job for financial reasons nor would I want to. IDK the answer but it's a lot to digest.

I'm with you both. I've been working 16-18 hour days, weekends, it literally ever ends. The pressure is intense- there is always something that was supposed to be done yesterday. I spend long stretches of the day hyperventilating which is especially problematic since it cuts into my work.
My boss would likely fire me if I expressed any hint of not being able to keep up, so obviously that discussion is not happening.
My DH is also working crazy hours. DD watches a lot of tv, plays on her kindle. Eats snacks. Gets told "one minute" and "not right now" a lot.
I won't quit but I have entertained the idea of asking to switch to a different (less stressful) role.

We've been doing this. Depending on your schedule it may not be a huge help. We have ours come 4-6 hours a day but we work way more than that. It's helpful in that she does schoolwork and fun activities. The expense of having her here the hours we need her would be astronomical, not to mention I'm not sure she'd be willing to work that much. She also can't work every day so some days we're just flailing about.
Its been better than nothing but if you work insane hours, you may not feel a huge difference.

I definitely ask myself what I could change if this goes on for another school year because this isn't sustainable. I am dependent on my salary and benefits but have thought about FMLA and/or a temporary reduction in my hours. I am scared of long term impacts on my job but I am also scared of long term impacts on my children and I am hoping the job will understand a temporary need in an extraordinary circumstance. I am waiting until we get much closer to September but it is on my mind every day.

She’s a local girl who is home from college. Not sure if she will go back to school or if she will be virtual too in the fall.
My backup plan would be to continue with this I guess. Not ideal but I can’t quit and give up benefits, retirement, etc. she is playing with them, helped with a few school assignments and overall just gave them attention. We are trying to get some of the schoolwork done in the morning so it’s mostly just playing when she’s here.
I’d highly recommend this to anybody trying to work from home and watch young kids.

I did the same. It was a huge help. I only have her come on nice weather days so she can get my kids out of here and I don't feel guilty they are zoned out on devices on a beautiful day.

I am in the same exact position!!! My son is also profoundly disabled and his summer session that he usually gets over the summer is cancelled and no word yet on when we have to return to the office (right now working from home). I will not be able to work if my son is home as I cannot just send him to any old daycare. Honestly I am stressing over this because I know if I am forced to leave I can't even get unemployment.

It's rough and I'm sorry.
I spoke to my boss yesterday about flexible hours for the summer. My husband is working out of the house (essential at a hospital) and goes in super early, but has been able to come home at normal times (4/5PM) lately. I am going to take 2-3 mornings a week (since my job is busier in the afternoon/evening) and spend time with my daughter, do laundry, heck, even lay in freaking bed a bit and log in from 1PM-8PM on those days. My DH will be home to handle dinner/evening stuff. Is that an option for you?

You could take paid family leave to care for your child, but the benefit is not available if you are able to work remotely. You also wouldn't be entitled to the $600 as that is unemployment, which is something else entirely. And like someone upthread mentioned, you generally cannot collect unemployment if you quit, you have to be laid off. Here is more info on paid family leave due to COVID.
