Re: Why NYS is in trouble...

So I looked my district in N.J. up and compared it with the one on LI where I grew up. You are getting fleeced. My new district is top ten in my state and paying its administration HALF of what your districts are paying. Even the highest and longest serving teachers are getting a third less in pay.

I was shocked that the rocky point school superintendent makes over $500k/yr. I don’t know what the solution is.

So to be clear, I am not anti teacher.

But what shocks me about Long Island (I didn’t grow up here) is how small the districts are and how much overhead there is. I grew up in a town with 16 elementary schools, 3 middle and 3 high schools. That all shared one superintendent and associated staff. Here the districts are one or 2 schools with a huge admin staff. It’s really mind blowing to me.

I’m really not sure how this much management/admin benefits our kids. I’d support higher pay for good teachers in a second as long as it came with the ability to terminate poor performers or at least some kind of merit based system.

And no, teachers should not be singled out and blamed for changes in work due to the pandemic. Those recent posts are ridiculous that suggest tax refunds for online learning.

But the reality is we are all going to have to face cuts in this terrible economy. That means schools as well. You can’t expect taxpayers to just make up a 20% decrease in state funding, especially when we are all losing jobs/bonuses/small businesses etc.

Merge districts, fewer superintendents making outrageous salaries. In my district there are six schools. There are so many towns on Long a island with two or three schools and multiple superintendents and assistant superintendents. You just don’t need that many. You could have a director of social studies curriculum, same for English, math, etc, which many of there districts have and they can roll up to the superintendent. There is just a ton of bloat. Many of my friends are teachers and they will hate me saying this, but paying them $160,000 for fifteen years of experience seems really high. In my district they are paying that level $120k.

It’s a good idea, I just don’t think that will ever happen here.

I am floored that the Rocky Point SD superintendent makes that much money!! Does Rocky Point even rate in the top 100? Top 200? He makes almost $200K more than the NYC chancellor? WOW! How is his salary so disproportionate to the rest of the superintendents?

Okay. Now I"m going back to read the rest of the article.

Also are James Hunderfund and Anna Hunderfund married? If so, they alone are raking in nearly $1 mil a year in public funds. From being in public education. From which she was suspended. WTG.

There is a theory that home values will potentially tank in certain areas if you merge districts and mid to high income areas would never go for it.

This is deplorable. What do these superintendents do besides make obnoxious phone calls? I understand paying them a reasonable wadge around what the teachers make (which is a very nice living on Long Island!) but they shouldn’t be paid the same as a surgeon. Makes my blood boil. Who approves these salaries?!?!

They are #267 in the state. William Floyd and Longwood ranked better

I don’t think this will change anytime soon. Try telling the residents of Garden City they need to merge with Hempstead and see how well it goes over. Or Three Village and Middle Country. Or Bay Shore and West Islip. Everyone will complain and then backpedal when district merging comes up in conversation.

That being said the forks could definitely stand to merge. Miller Place has four schools and Rocky Point is comparable, no reason you can’t merge those two districts.

I think the tides are turning as the children of millennials start school. I know several people who chose the more middle of the road districts over Jericho or Scarsdale, for example, purely because they do not want their children in a pressure cooker.

That's not to say the examples you give wouldn't cause an uproar, but I have a feeling we're going to see a shift in rankings not too far into the future.

Yes they’re married. AND even better...

James Hunderfund from Commack Schools, and now currently at Malverne Public Schools, receives a $318,081 pension. After collecting his pension, Hunderfund landed the job as Malverne schools superintendent. Records show he earned a salary of $242,349 in 2018 from Malverne, according to Patch.

He’s retiring at the end of this year, they announced his successor in February. This dude has great timing. And probably a pretty f*@&$ nice house..

They have discussed merging districts here and there over the years and it will never happen based on the reasons discussed above.

I'm in a relatively small district, surrounded by a few small school districts and wouldn't mind merging with certain ones but, there is one that is undesirable as their school board funnels most of the money towards private schools.

Re: Why NYS is in trouble...

I've been saying this forever. The whole "micro-district " thing is nonsense. There is no reason why our superintendent should be making so much money for overseeing a few schools. We have 1 of each type of school. The district I moved from had I think 6 elementary schools. Why is this guy getting paid such an exorbitant amount to oversee 3 schools. It's insane.

I also understand that our home values are directly linked to our schools being more "desirable". I wouldn't want to merge with the neighboring districts.

The more I think about it, I think we just tell ourselves that our schools on LI are superior to make us feel better about the insane taxes. Anytime I've suggested moving in the past, everyone IRL asks what we're going to do about schooling, like every other school in the country pales in comparison to our amazing LI schools.

Re: Why NYS is in trouble...

Also, how do you get rid of an overpaid superintendent? I'm not sure if I am recalling correctly, but my cousin used to live in Rocky Point district and I know she would say they had to wait to get rid of the current superintendent and he was paid an insane amount. Is it the same guy? or did they get rid of him and now they are paying someone else a ridiculous salary?

This exactly. And I was one of those people. I am in a top LI district and while it's great I thought that we couldn't get that elsewhere, but now that I am doing more research that's just not the case. There are many good schools outside NY and there are good public schools. I thought if we left NY we would have to go private.

As for the salaries I do have to say across the board they should be less. It is so difficult to get a teaching job on LI because they are so well paid.

I think it would be hard to change anything like salary reductions because of Unions.... teachers on LI make really good salaries, administration makes even more.. then you have pensions. Also same for police departments here on LI. A police officer on long island makes double the salary of that of one in NYC. I don't know what the solution is. All I know is that the rising of taxes is going to continue to drive people out.

I didn't grow up on Long Island and I'm continually surprised at this micro-school districts. Why does one zip code need 2 elementary school districts? They are all 'nice' areas, what would be the big deal combining? I can imagine but still baffles me.

LI teachers are paid very well, but that is not true for the entire state. I am a teacher in a suburban district in Upstate NY and I make $65,000 with 14 years experience. That was pretty much my starting pay in 2006 when I taught on LI.

when I lived on LI I always heard how amazing NY schools are, but if you look at all of the nationwide stats LI is not on top, It is Massachusetts and New Jersey which consistently have the best schools.
