If things are slowly and cautiously starting to open back up

then why can't schools? I know there haven't been any decisions made yet, and it's still too early to say for sure, but there's still an awful lot of talk about keeping schools online in September. If a slow opening of businesses goes well, then I'm hoping the same can be applied to schools. September is still a long way away. These kids are already getting together anyway, so why not open in September? Sorry just venting. Chat Icon

I 100% agree.
After what I saw last week with kids gathering and getting together there is no reason for them not to be in school.

I just don't understand why schools have to stay closed if these kids are already playing together in parks and backyards. Might as well do some math while they're at it.

I think they should absolutely start a phased reopening of school in September. I have no idea what a phased reopening looks like, but I do think there is almost zero chance of buildings reopening as usual in the fall. My hope is we can slowly phase into normal school a few months in. The most absurd thing I have heard is keeping schools completely online until September 2021. I have heard that suggestion many times. I can't comprehend how that could even be in anyone's thought process.

My district hasn’t made any concrete decisions, but they do have a ton of models based on different scenarios that could be present in September.

I think it’s good that schools are trying to take a proactive approach for a bunch of different situations that might arise. Obviously nobody was prepared for this in March but they want to be prepared in September, whether it be for fully online, half-and-half, or business as usual.

I do agree. I do like the planning. I like the scenarios. They do need to have a plan A, Plan B etc.
It's better than just sitting around and doing nothing while waiting for the governor to make a decision.

I think they will open. I also don't think it'll be a doomsday type of opening either, I'm confident that by September things will be much better.

I agree that by September things will be much better, look at how much progress we have made since March 22nd. And I want schools to go back as normal, none of this hybrid stuff. But governors in all 50 states have been very vocal about how schools will not be normal for the upcoming school year. Not one state has said they anticipate normal school. I think it is insane to say that in May. But, government and superintendents have been hinting at this since April. It makes me want to cry. I don't see how anyone thinks children not going back to school in September is an even halfway decent idea.

It's ironic that my kids elementary school spent this past year building a new cafeteria that now they probably won't be able to use next year. But I will be fine with them staying in the same classroom all day with only their classmates. I need some kind of normal school to be open.

I think it's good to have a number of different scenarios for the fall as well.

I really hope they don't rush the decision. It's strange that they are deciding for September in June when we will still be in the process of opening (Phase 4 if everything goes perfectly won't happen until July).

I agree, but I guess they are worried if they wait until August, then that gives working parents zero time to prepare for child care. That also gives teachers zero time to really up the remote learning.
I also think that every region of NY will be in stage 4 by August, except MAYBE NYC, but even they will most likely be in stage 3 by then. Which leads me to believe schools are not a given in stage 4. However, has anyone heard anything about the syndrome affecting children? It was all over the news every single day, neither Cuomo or DiBlasio has uttered one word about it in over a week. I find that odd.

I think school will be back in September. Yes, they'll have sanitizer in every room, make everyone wash their hands more often, try to have the seats spread apart as much as possible, maybe wear masks, etc. But, in general, I think things will be pretty much normal.

This is exactly what I mean. All of this talk about keeping schools online when there's still a lot of time between now and September. And pretending that kids aren't spending time together anyway. What's the point of keeping schools closed to reduce exposure, but then having all these kids have playdates together?

you had me ok till masks! I just cant see elementary school kids wearing masks correctly all day!!

My kids do not like them and the one or 2 times I have had to have them wear it i had to tell them to stop touching it and not pull it off! i can imagine teachers having to do that all day!!

I hope they have more emphasis on washing hands and sanitizing it should have been like that the whole time!!

Yes, I agree with you! That's why I said "maybe masks". Even if they do require masks, it won't last, IMO.

No - I haven't heard anything since then either... I was actually looking for more info on it yesterday.

I'm just afraid if they make the call too early, we won't go back. It makes me hopeful though that colleges are planning on going back in the fall. And in some other states they are planning on starting earlier in case there is another huge outbreak this fall.

My thoughts on masks for kids is really that they will just cause them to touch their faces more. My daughter certainly touches her face more when she wears one.
I feel like in kids it will 100% backfire

They can't even get adults to wear masks. How will masks work with kids?

I hope that schools open in the fall. I do think they will need a plan for what to do if someone at school catches the virus. Will they shut down for a day and sanitize? Will people have to quarantine? Lots to think about...

And the thing is- what is going to make it any safer to open in Sept 2021?
Does anyone have an answer to that?

Do you mean talk amongst the general public or actual school administrators and government talk? I haven't heard anything other than speculation about schools not reopening.

I truly believe that they'll reopen if at all possible, but that's my speculation. However, I think it's their responsibility to plan for possible closures should another race hit or even just a cluster within the district. Imo they should reopen but have contingency plans in place.

No one knows anything yet. I work for the DOE and we are just figuring out summer school. No one has said anything about September. We all just hope we will be back in the building with the students. I think we need to plan for remote planning for September and parents need time to figure out child care. September is just far away. I'm due with my second DC the end of September so I hope things are different by then.

NYC and Long Island (all schools for that matter) should be figuring out ways of how they will open in september instead of saying that we probably won't open buildings in September. Remote learning is not working and kids need to be in school. A vaccine wont be availlable for a long time and even when it is available- i know i won't be giving it to my children (they're not guinea pigs). I'm not the best at getting my point across but bottom line is kids need to be in school with teachers, not "learning" online.

My son is in kindergarten. We went on a 3 hour hike on Sunday. We wore his mask the entire time without touching it even though it got hot by the end. we told him he only needed to wear it if we were near people but he choose to wear it the entire time. I think you aren’t giving kids enough credit. If people practice wearing a mask with their child, I think kids can acclimate to it.

This. The thing is if people are so anxiouss to reopen, and masks are the only real way to really minimize risk, then people who can't tolerate them will have to stay in with the infirm and the elderly. They're too vulnerable to be out in public.
