I would never vote no. I can't imagine parents doing so, it ultimately would be so detrimental to their kids. It seems so spiteful.

I foresee the boomer generations voting budgets down. LI school districts are gonna tailspin if that happens.

im cleary not cool/hip.

who exactly is considered a boomer? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think that refers to the "baby boomer" generation.
People born from 1946 to 1964

ahh ok

lol well you hear kids now a day call their parents boomers and I have been meaning to find out exactly what that meant since my DD thinks its funny to say ok boomer to me all the time Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm sorry to say that for the first time, I will be voting down my school budget. I was very disappointed in how my district (West Islip) handled the pandemic and virtual education. I spoke with both my children's teachers and building principal with no real effort on their part to resolve the issue. The superintendent never returned my phone call Chat Icon

Honestly, voting no only hurts your district and subsequently your child's education. Regardless of the situation, I'll vote yes for my school budget and hope it passes.

As a parent (or even someone who lives in the community), nothing good will come from voting no. It won't make distance learning better - and assuming there is some sort of normalcy to next school year, there could be larger classes, cuts to busses, sports, extra curriculars, arts programs, assemblies, etc etc.

If you are unhappy with something voting no to the budget definitely WON't help!

The state is cutting funding by 20%. How would schools be able to maintain programming?

Schools can put out a new budget with drastic cuts. If it fails a second time, then there is no tax increase and cuts, cuts, cuts, etc.

Budgets rarely stay the same from year to year because costs increase (salaries, insurance, retirement contributions) as per negotiated union contracts and cost of living.

If the budget fails, cuts are made (clubs, activities, positions excessed) and a 2nd vote occurs. If that fails, the district goes to an austerity budget, operating at bare minimum cost (say goodbye to all sports, clubs, purchasing of new materials, technology, etc) - class sizes will skyrocket and transportation will be cut to those mandated by NYS regulations. Many districts bus more students than they are legally required to do so, and that will be gone. Also to be cut would be vocational programs/music/arts etc.

While no one wants to pay more and many are upset with how distance learning has been enacted, voting the budget down will only make it worse. And many have mentioned overpaid teachers - if budgets fail and teacher positions are cut (excessed), the newest teachers (who are often paid the least) are the first to go. Those who have been teaching for many years (and therefore make more money) have seniority and their jobs will be safe.

The best way to improve the situation in your district is to attend BOE meetings, contact administration and BOE members, try to join shared decision making teams/planning committees that are forming now, and participate in the PTA.

Re: Do you think school budgets will pass this year?

Maybe I just don't understand how the budgets work but we must have saved some money by not having school for 3 months - at least in terms of special events costs and certain unnecessary staff. Where did that money go and why can't they put it towards next year? And since we will 99% be remote learning next year, that means there will be no sports or extracurricular activities or cafeteria costs etc. so are those things still counted in the budget? I just don't see why it is going up.

There are extra funds that are rolling over from the savings of virtual learning (although there were some other costs incurred).

But as a PP said - they are cutting school funding 20%.

Our district proposed pretty much the same things as the previous year in the budget to fall in under the cap - no new additions. But there is a bond to be voted on too - and it looks like they are doing the work that the bond is for regardless of whether it passes or not (they’ve started on it).

I just think since those who have no kids in the district, now that they have ballots in their hands, will vote no. DH is talking about voting no even... we’ve been arguing since he doesn’t understand what will happen (he wants the cuts to come from areas that will not see cuts, it will hurt the kids)

As for salaries, superintendents I have issues with, but principals deserve every penny imo. They often work upwards of 11/12 hours a day, often working weekends. They don’t get summers off, and often work through school breaks. It’s a very demanding job that receives appropriate compensation if you ask me.

hmm didn't know this about principal but what are they doing requiring them to work so much?

They do everything. Supervise teachers, provide observations and teacher evaluations. They’re often at school before school begins, to make sure that things run smoothly. They help to oversee that curriculum is taught the way it should. At our elementary school, the principal attends every pta meeting. Think of all of the school events-concerts, fundraisers, programs, graduations, incoming student events, etc. They attend and oversee those. They work with the superintendents and board of ed to oversee district initiatives. Organize professional development for the teachers. Work on scheduling and programming. Speak to approximately ten billion parents a day. Deal with student discipline. Oversee interviews and hiring. Technology initiatives. Budget issues. Honestly, the list is endless. It’s a job I don’t envy whatsoever. My friend became an assistant principal at the high school level, and on a good day works 6-6 with a two week vacation in the summer.

ok fair enough! though I think some salaries are still a little high they at least work for it. I didn't know they didn't get summers off!

Don’t forget that administrators such as principals also hold two masters degrees (almost always), along with a slew of other advanced graduate courses. Many also hold doctorates.

Administration works 11-12 months out of the year. And even if they work the 11 it’s usually Aug that is the off month and there is way too much to do to really take off.

There will be no re-vote if the budget fails in a district this year. It’s one vote. So if it fails it’s automatic austerity.

Re: Do you think school budgets will pass this year?

If the budget fails they should start paying the teachers by the hour. The good ones will earn more than they did before remote learning (and deserve EVERY PENNY) and the others well, let's just say it will leave a lot of wiggle room in the budget. Every other job you have to continue to work just as hard or harder during this pandemic. Somehow so many teachers have gotten off the hook and are enabled to do next to nothing. I should be getting a paycheck for teaching my elementary school child. This is BS. Pay them by the hour they work. That would be fair.

The districts really did not save much money by school being closed. They are still paying the bus companies because they are under contract. They are still paying their teachers and administrators. Schools really do not pay for special events, that is mostly the PTAs.

Most districts are putting up budgets that are basically the same as last year. Even with no additions, teacher salaries and retirement funds go up so the tax increase has to increase unless they cut programs. No one knows how much money Cuomo is taking away. If they do take 20% is its going to be devastating to every school district. So right now everyone is voting on budgets that are just a guess. No one knows the real numbers. Cuiomo should have postponed the budget vote until he was able to give the schools true state aide money.

I think there will be more NO's this year than usual. I will not vote NO since I know usually the first things to go are cuts to special education and my son is currently receiving special education services. But I can see frustration with many as our taxes continue to go up year after year, and especially since we may be learning remotely in the Fall.

I think many will feel this way.

Unfortunately, it will end up hurting the kids the most if you vote no. And it likely will not change the virtual education.

Isn't that true of ANY job?? There will always be a few who, NO MATTER THE JOB, don't work as hard but that's how the cookie crumbles.

MOST teachers work their a$$es off. NO teachers should be paid hourly. Her comment was obnoxious. Typical teacher hate.

This is like beating a dead horse but the constant teacher hate while at the same time demanding the best schools and education is ridiculous. You don't get to disrespect teachers, suggest they aren't deserving of their salaries but then demand your little angels are given a top notch education. You can't have it both ways.

This is the problem.

People can’t say some teachers suck without being accused of teacher hate.
Same when you say there maybe some bad cops out there automatically you hate cops. Ridiculous! Like you said there is good and bad in every job!

In most jobs If you are not doing your job you get fired!

When you work for the public you have to please them since they pay your salary. What’s wrong with expecting teachers to do their job. If they don’t want put an all in effort then yes they should be paid less or be fired and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with saying that. Hire ones that are actually good!

And no I’m not a teacher hater. I have friends who are teachers that work their ass off. And our pissed there are teachers that are doing nothing and giving the rest of them bad names!!

Most teachers do their job and do it well. The problem with commenting and whining about teachers, the work they do and their salaries is MOST people have zero idea what the profession even entails. Therefore, they are commenting from a place of complete ignorance. Just because teachers are paid by taxpayers doesn't mean taxpayers know what the hell they are talking about.

People who CONSTANTLY complain about teachers are just exhausting. I think we've proved during this quarantine that those complaining can't do a better job so maybe it's time to start appreciating what teachers actually do for your kids every day. Furthermore, given the circumstances of the shutdowns and teachers being thrust into a remote learning situation they weren't prepared for it might be a better approach to cut them some slack right now instead of calling for their heads.

I appreciate teachers that are doing their job! My DS gets extra help in Math and I appreciate that teacher she is actually putting an effort in however his main teacher has done nothing but post work and write about her day of spending time with her children and doing things with them Chat Icon Chat Icon great glad you have time to do this while I am working and trying to teach my kids and you are doing nothing!! But you are right I should just appreciate her for uploading stuff to a site.

I would be more than happy if the district actually addressed the issues and said this is happening now but we expect XYZ to happen so please be patient with us. Also its not acceptable some teachers in one district are actually doing something and others arent. Clearly thats a lack of leadership and guidance.

You are right I have no idea what it takes to be a teacher and I cant do a better job but that doesnt mean I cant sit here and say I expect a teacher to their job and do it well!!

And I just dont complain on a site I have actually made efforts to find out what is going on and i get no response.

I am a teacher, so I think I have a good idea of what the profession entails. And this pandemic has been eye opening as to how many truly lazy teachers there are. My daughter has her main teacher, and four specials teachers at school. Out of five teachers, ONE is doing a good job.

These are not random people. They are highly educated professionals, and pandemic or no, after over two months, they should have their stuff together and do a better job. Plain and simple. I know very few people who think schools or teachers are doing a good job right now.
