Do you think school budgets will pass this year?
so do you think your school will pass thier budget?
I feel like tons of people are not happy with kids not being in school and the lack of effort by a lot of teachers/school districts that they dont see a reason for their taxes to go up more.
I am on the fence if I will vote yes or no because one I am not happy with the district on how its been handling distance learning but also I actually looked at our budget for once and really can't believe that amount of people making more than 140K a year.
we have 1 superintendent 3 assistant all make 200K+ a year.
All our principals making more than 140K+ a year some of them making 170K+ a year!!
oh and someone show is a coordinator of social studies makes 140K+ a year the same as some principals ?!!! which to me is crazy!!
Not sure I would want to up my taxes more when I feel we dont need all these high paying positions and they are sucking right now at distance learning!
ETA: I have the superintendents wrong. there is one main superintendent who make over 250K a year. A deputy superintend and 3 assistants. Why the f do we need all these superintendents??!!
and yes I admit this is the first year I am actually looking at the budget which I know is very bad of me

Do you think school budgets will pass this year?
Maybe. I would almost never vote 'No' for a school budget. I'm a NYC teacher and I feel that teachers should earn a good salary. But since I've been working my butt off doing live instruction and being connected to my students each day, and my son's kindergarten teacher is hardly doing either of those things. And his school counselor is just figuring out how to use Google Meet, I'm more than a little upset. There are some districts I've heard that are excising positions due to budget cuts. It will be interesting to see what happens, especially since it will be mostly mail in votes.

I have heard school districts may have to cut positions if aid is cut from NYS to schools and of course if the budget doesnt pass!
I wonder if mail in will get more people or less people to vote! and if that will help pass or fail the budget!

I get the frustration at how distance learning is being handled in some districts. I am a NYC live for most of the day with my students and then see what my friends who work on LI do.
But I’m curious what people think voting no will do-how will that improve distance learning?

for my district there is no reason that distance learning should not be working better.
Some teachers are doing nothing!!!
We already had the tools to do it so I don't see me having to pay more money in taxes for some teachers to be sitting on their ass and doing nothing will help!
Maybe if my superintendent addressed my concerns I would be more willing too. So i don't see a reason to fund his salary either!
Plus I am sick of the disregard of working parents in the district!
like i said I am on the fence on which way I will vote but right now I dont see a reason to raise my taxes more!

I will be voting yes, because to me, voting no would only have a negative impact on my child’s education. As it is, districts are looking to lose 20% of state aid next year. Losing more due to a failed budget would be difficult.
It will be interesting though. I believe last year 1400 people in our town voted on the budget. This year, voting forms will be mailed to 13,000.
As for salaries, superintendents I have issues with, but principals deserve every penny imo. They often work upwards of 11/12 hours a day, often working weekends. They don’t get summers off, and often work through school breaks. It’s a very demanding job that receives appropriate compensation if you ask me.

I believe it will be hard for a lot of districts. I know so many ppl that are not happy with the way things are being handled by teachers, and the district in general. My kids are not in school so I don’t have a personal experience but I can say the elementary school DS1 was going at the beginning of this school yr was very nice to us when we needed to start homeschooling, the principal and the teachers were so understanding and compassionate of our situation, they even gave us a few weeks worth of work material to take home. However other parents that belong to the same district (different schools) did not experience the same. Plus our superintendent was brave enough to risk his own neck (he’s an interim super) and wrote letters to Albany against some of the vaccine mandate bills.

If people think they aren’t getting what they paid for now wait til a budget fails. Even in good times a failed budget sucks. Kids will get zero.
And to the OP - would you think someone as the CEO of a Corp shouldn’t make $250k? Superintendents run a Corp and so do the assistants. I get the same way until my mother became an administrator in a school district. She worked 2x as hard as I do and made way less.

I always vote yes.
Districts are expected to lose a ton of funding as it is this year. A no vote would be devastating to any district. Cuts are being made left and right to account for funding gaps.

depends the company and what the CEO is doing! i question why they make so much when its the people underneath them doing most of the work!
From what I can see I am not convinced in my district that they deserve it. but either way i need to know why there has to be so many of them!!

Do you think school budgets will pass this year?
I logged into our district budget meeting last week and tried to follow along. It was interesting. If I followed correctly, even with a 20% cut, they showed where they were able to pull from surplus ‘emergency’ funds over the years. I believe our proposed increase was minuscule. They did thank the higher up’s for declining pay increases next year due to the current circumstances, that was very kind of them.

I don't see any way things would get better by voting no. I'll be voting yes as I always do. Our teachers and principals have been working tirelessly even if not every thing is exactly how I wish it would be.

We have six schools in my district, and only one superintendent. He is doing an excellent job. I know that even in my district there are parents that are upset because nothing is ever good enough for them. They were complaining hat there were no zooms. The reality was their kids were not attending them because the teacher wrote optional. So the kid said I am not going, Now the parents get notified when their kids teachers are having a zoom class so they can make a decision as a family.

listen i know some teachers going above and beyond even in my district! I know some districts have their shit together! but not all teachers or districts are!
i just see the tons of comments and post on FB where people actually think they deserve a tax credit since kids are not in school ( i am not one of those people)
So I question and wonder if school budgets will pass.
Honestly if they proposed one where they didnt need more money and my taxes dont go up (meaning they use the same budget they had last year) I would vote yes no questions asked.

I would never vote no. I can't imagine parents doing so, it ultimately would be so detrimental to their kids. It seems so spiteful.
I foresee the boomer generations voting budgets down. LI school districts are gonna tailspin if that happens.

They do everything. Supervise teachers, provide observations and teacher evaluations. They’re often at school before school begins, to make sure that things run smoothly. They help to oversee that curriculum is taught the way it should. At our elementary school, the principal attends every pta meeting. Think of all of the school events-concerts, fundraisers, programs, graduations, incoming student events, etc. They attend and oversee those. They work with the superintendents and board of ed to oversee district initiatives. Organize professional development for the teachers. Work on scheduling and programming. Speak to approximately ten billion parents a day. Deal with student discipline. Oversee interviews and hiring. Technology initiatives. Budget issues. Honestly, the list is endless. It’s a job I don’t envy whatsoever. My friend became an assistant principal at the high school level, and on a good day works 6-6 with a two week vacation in the summer.

ok fair enough! though I think some salaries are still a little high they at least work for it. I didn't know they didn't get summers off!

Don’t forget that administrators such as principals also hold two masters degrees (almost always), along with a slew of other advanced graduate courses. Many also hold doctorates.

I think they are going to have problems.
I always vote yes - I remember when i was in high school, the budget failed and the things that were going to get cut were the things I loved.
This year will be a challenge. Generally very few in the community actually vote but this year - you don’t have to get out and vote. People are aware that distance learning has been a challenge. We also have a bond in our budget for construction - because our initial bond didn’t cover all the costs - so I can’t see that passing either. Many would feel why am I paying an extra $200/year for a building kids aren’t in (I think it’s a bit much too). They never look to cut administrators- we have so many high school and middle school principals - not sure what they all do. We don’t have a huge district...
