Schools- all or nothing
If schools are not opened in September, do you think they will try to open them at some point? Or do you think they will make the decision this summer to keep them closed until Sept 2021? I assumed they would maybe try every 2 weeks depending on numbers. But my co teacher said she assumed it would be September or nothing.  I guess I was naive? lol What do you think?

I do not think they would make an initial decision to close them for a full school year. If not September I think they would see how the flu and corona season go in Fall and re-evaluate for January.
But what do I know.

I think every 2 weeks doesn't matter - I think if they don't open in Sept (which at this point, I honestly have no opinion. I'm completely prepared for whatever comes down the pike. I have no control over it so I'm trying to mentally prepare for either outcome) I think they'd go on a month by month basis.

An all or nothing approach would hit the city schools and lower income areas the hardest.
Working from home is a luxury. It's often a higher paying job that requires some sort of higher education. While I'm not saying it's easy to work from home and have your children learning from home, it is typically a situation for middle and upper class families.
But the lower income families? No way. The parents of the students I teach in NYC are cashiers at stores, taxi drivers, custodians at hospitals, fast food workers, etc. They don't even have an option of working from home. What would happen to those families for an entire year of school if it is remote?

I have friends in Virginia and they have been told to expect either a November or January start and to prepare to not have kids go to school every day.
I don’t think it’s all or nothing. And if it is a full year people will complain about their tax dollars. My fourth graders teachers are teaching separately than the other fourth grade teachers but my second grade teacher is teaching as a team across the grade and you can see that they can get that accomplished with just one or two teachers, not 4. My sons teacher isn’t contributing much.

Do you think it's possible they would evaluate the situation quarterly with the intention of potentially minimizing disruptions to learning in the middle of a quarter?
(I don't teach K to 12, so I have no idea...just curious!)

Online learning isn't adequate learning, so I would hope that they would do everything in their power to get those kids back in school, and not wait until December right off the bat.

That's my understanding as well. There has to be a factual predicate for it, though, so we don't come through an attempt fuelled by impatience with a decimated population.
They are not going to keep our kids home just because they've been home when the threat of mass deaths has been removed.

I was listening to an interview from someone that made the decision to close a California University for the fall and teach remotely instead. He said that it is easier to start with remote learning and then transition to a classroom than to go from teaching in a classroom and then have to change to remote learning.

i am slowly accepting the fact that schools will be closed in September and will open god knows when. Figure I will flip my shit legit probably cry get it all over with now the anger and upset and if they open in September be pleasantly surprised.
If they do not open in September my district better have a plan where these teachers are actually teaching something and not just uploading documents to a site! its bulllshit what they are doing now which is basically nothing and getting paid good money for that!! (yes i Know some teachers are dong something but a lot in my district are doing nothing!!!)

I honestly think they will be doing part time school with remote learning the other half which is going to force the workforce into restructuring work schedules, you can’t have no school and working parents and no daycare.... so I think September will be interesting. I’m grateful my kids are young and I had a sitter for them when I work. My husband is working from home for now and it’s working with him watching them and working while I’m working so just taking it one week at a time for now until he has a return date

I completely agree with this. Although, now that I have picked up my child's locker contents I can see the documents that one teacher has been uploading to Google Classroom, is the exact same sh*t she was doing in class. It's disgusting, and frankly when this is over, I will sit with the principal about the lack of teaching. Now I know why my kid said this teacher just talks all day and goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with the subject.

She pre records herself walking through the lesson and then has the kid fill in the other work on their own!! I am 100% satisfy with that.

Not expect parents to explain and teach. I have my own job and I did not sign up for homeschooling so I should not have to do it. I expect the teachers being paid to do it to actually teach!!

They better be using the summer to train these teachers on how to properly remote teach, in the event this continues in the fall, or schools have to shut again for a second wave.
I am a teacher, and I still find it appalling how little teaching some kids are getting. The fact that the districts & teachers unions are not allowing it, is even more appalling.

Oh please God no. I can't even think about that. The kids need to go back. This is not good for them in any capacity.
I have zero complaints about my kids' teachers but it is not the same. And school is not just about academics. They need socialization. They need a break from home. They need structure. They need a break from mom and dad. They need a break from siblings. They need a change of scenery. They need exposure to the arts, reading or physical activity that may not be getting at home.
I know our leaders are cognizant of this and I truly hope they can come up with a plan that will allow kids to safely return to schools in the fall.

Looping seems like the solution but is SO much work, haha
Not only would teachers have to adapt to remote learning, they'd have to learn an entirely new curriculum and be on a grade level with everyone else who is new to the curriculum, so no experienced teachers at that grade level. And the teachers of the oldest grade in the building can't go up, so they'd have to go all the way down to K.
I've looped before and it's a great concept..but in reality..

I know it's not easy but, and it wouldn't make sense for the 4th grade teachers to teach kindergarten lol. I can imagine it being difficult to teach a group of kids who didn't have normal instruction that you never officially met.
