Re: Camp!

I don't understand why camps would even be closed when daycares are open. OK, so now I can sign my kid up for daycare over the summer instead of him being outside and playing, he's cooped up indoors with a bunch of other kids. With people starting to go back to work, day cares are going to be full. I see no difference between daycare and camp. Except with camp, they'd be outside in the fresh air all day.

I'm thinking it will have to do with activities... You can separate and stay inside and do calm activities but, being outside when it's hot out - if you can't access the pool, it may be very difficult to operate.

Inside activities like coloring and playing with blocks? The kids are touching everything and nothing is being sanitized in between. I would think outside is exactly the same. I still don't get it. They said UV rays kill the virus, it just makes no sense that outside is more dangerous.

Chat Icon Chat Icon I really just don't understand the justification. I mean what do we have to do to stop this nonsense? There is no reason why indoor activities are safer than outdoor. They even said on the news that UV light (like you know... the light from the sun lol) kills the virus. But, somehow being locked inside with recirculated air makes us safer. Chat Icon It makes no sense to me.

I just saw a sign someone posted online and it said: Danger, you're being conditioned to view your freedom as "selfish". It really makes sense.

I don't fully disagree. I think the main difference depends on what activities the outdoor camps can do on hot days vs. being in an air conditioned daycare.

My son usually goes to a daycare based camp but, they go out and about every day on different trips. But, if it's just sitting at the daycare this summer, I'm not paying to send him for that when I've been given the go ahead to work remotely full/part time until school starts back up. We plan on spending most of the summer out of state so the kids can have some fun.

Re: Camp!

Aren't most daycares classes of roughly 10 kids that can be isolated from the other classes, and most camps roughly a few hundred kids mingling together?
I think that may be the main factor. As part of the phased opening, groups of 10 or less are going to be allowed, then 25 or less, etc.

My DC haven't been in daycare for many years, and only two different ones, so I don't know the setup of the average daycare, or the setup of the average camp over the summer. I'm just going by the very limited experience I have with daycare and camps.

The smaller classes for the babies and toddlers have to have a larger adult to baby ratio. Keeping them in smaller groups makes it easier to handle the babies that need constant attention/assistance. The groups of older kids are usually a lot larger and only need a few adults as per NYS requirements. I'm willing to bet that the daycares will hire a few more workers if it means taking a lot more older kids this summer. The center my kids just started going to is already preparing for a lot more kids by creating a new activity schedule geared towards the interests of older kids. I'm sorry but I still don't see a difference between that and camp. Camps would be able to manage with smaller groups if NYS says they have to. I still say there is no valid reason camps can't open but daycares can.

Camp!

Our camp has been sending out emails saying they plan to be open. DH is adamant that DC is staying home. If DC stays home, I'm out the $$ I paid for camp, and the $$ in my flexible spending account.

Yep. Keeping camps closed will only overwhelm and overcrowd daycares if parents have to go to work.
So what's the difference?

It’s the same couple kids just coming and playing on the swing set. If their parents are comfortable and we are comfortable I don’t see a problem. We’ve basically been home for many weeks and I think the numbers are low enough now that we aren’t putting each other at risk. They seem so happy to be able to play with other kids and they aren’t using video games so that’s a plus...

There was a helicopter flying low in my neighborhood a few nights last week and of course that set the neighborhood facebook page on fire- everyone asking what it was about.
And then of course someone was like- it's probably a spy plane for Cuomo making sure we are all locked in our houses.

Re: Camp!

A lot of kids I know are now getting together (outside). For the most part they didn't for March and April but for the past week or two it's been a lot more. The reality is that if there is NO camp, then kids WILL still get together all summer long. No way are all NY kids staying inside alone all summer. So actually, camp is a good thing because at least it could be somewhat "controlled" in terms of keeping groups separate, cleaning frequently, taking temperatures, etc. I think one of the reasons it may not happen is simply for liability purposes.

We caved this weekend too and a couple of friends over. Only outside. I had to sneak them in the backyard because I didn't want my picture plastered all over the Facebook Moms page!

Camp!

We caved too, last night we had friends over and had a fire in our backyard. They never came in my house. I saw my son genuinely smile for the first time in months, making smores with his friend. That was worth any judgement.
