Re: Pro science article in favor of reopening.

It seems like the article is suggesting a re-opening similar to how it is being handled locally. Not sure about the nursing home aspect. I'm not sure where we stand on that. Was that your interpretation?

Yes I know it’s an op-Ed. It’s clearly an opinion piece, but it is written by a doctor, a scientist, and not Karen - unless she’s writing for the New York Times again. It highlights the additional health tolls of the lockdown that many of us were citing and basically being told in response how stupid and thoughtless we were. Because science! Listen to the scientists! Well, here’s one. I thought it was worth sharing.

Re: Article by a scientist in favor of reopening.

I agree we can reopen America if its done safely- the problem is that a good percentage of people refuse to wear a mask or socially distance. Since these people refuse to cooperate. then local leaders have no choice but to rely on increasing infection numbers to keep businesses closed.

The fact is China was able to get their numbers down drastically because they have a government that strictly enforces public health measures over any personal freedoms and citizens are unlikely to protest and will follow orders. Here, we have personal freedoms and people who adamantly prioritize getting a haircut over the health of their neighbors.

There are many other European countries that have the same problem- people just are done w/ lockdowns and want to act like this pandemic is over. The virus doesnt care about borders or politics- they need a living human host to infect and as long as humans continue to interact with other humans, the virus will silently keep spreading.

Do you have figures on the percentage of people who refuse to wear a mask?

I'm asking this honestly, because I have not seen anyone refusing. You literally cannot enter a building without one on. Granted, I don't go out much, but when I do I'm happy to wear one in any public place. Every single person I know feels the same, and every single person who has voiced an opinion on this site about reopening has said the same as well.

Where is the resistance coming from?

I definitely know at least a couple people who refuse to wear a mask. And there was a thread posted the other day on here with a link to a video of someone on a rant about not wanting to wear a mask. The person who posted it thought the video was hilarious. It wasn’t.

i see them all the time (granted, i'm on the other side of the country). it drives me bonkers.

i won't go into details because it will just piss me off... but i see it every day. we've denied a lot of vendors the ability to enter our station because they won't send their staff with masks on. we offer to provide masks and they decline... so they are asked to leave.

This is exactly what my DH says. Once the government starts reopening things, people will be even less likely to follow protocol since they will have a false sense of security. He said he went to Lowes quickly last weekend to pick something up that we needed and he said you would think it was a regular spring day with how many people were there browsing.

I have yet to see people not following the rules, but I am not in public much right now (because I am following the guidelines).

I'm sorry, but this is anecdotal and does not support the argument that we can't reopen.

I am seeing it in various areas when I drive around. More so in LI than Queens (where my parents are sheltering in place and I bring them essential items). I have seen a few people with Trump 2020 tshirts walking down the street with no masks on (men), I have not been inside a grocery store since the lockdown so I can't attest to mask usage inside (but I am sure they are enforcing mask wearing rules). It is not a TON of people but there are a few, but as we all know, all it takes is just 1 stupid person to cause an outbreak (see the S. Korea gay nightclub guy who infected many people in 1 night).

The leader of my local civic association posted a rant on Facebook, on the community page saying he wasn't going to wear a mask, together with lots of rhetoric designed to incite the masses.

Ok so you do not have to wear a mask walking down the street unless you are going to be near another person. This has never been mandatory, nor is it even recommended. I have gone on many walks and never come within 15 ft of another person. So that anecdote means nothing.

If you haven't been in a grocery store you can't give your opinion on what you *think* might be happening. I have been in grocery stores and EVERYONE is wearing masks. Some are wearing gloves.

People not wanting to wear masks is not the same as people refusing to wear them. I hate the masks, but I absolutely wear one in every public place I go.

agreed. I do not wear a mask when walking down the street.
Perhaps if I was in Manhattan and it was a crowded street. But I doubt there are many crowds in Manhattan anymore either. But more population so maybe then.
But not on the streets in my area and as soon as I leave a store, I rip it off so I can breathe.
So you may see me walking to my car with no mask on - but that doesn't really mean anything.
And yes, I do NOT want to wear a mask. I hate it more than anything. But yes, I do wear it when needed.
And I have not seen anyone in Target or Stop n Shop or the liquor store or the local bagel shop without one since the mandate was put into place.
I'd feel weird without one for the mere fact that I'd be getting the stink eye.
Its a peer pressure thing with me to be honest.

Dictionary.con definition of an article:

a piece of writing included with others in a newspaper, magazine, or other publication.
"an article about middle-aged executives..”

Miriam Webster:
a nonfictional prose composition usually forming an independent part of a publication (such as a magazine).

I do believe this met the definition. I didn’t say it was a news article.

The thing is, it is not an unbiased, NEWS article. It is clearly an OPINION. And there are probably just as many "articles" out there that say the complete opposite of this. It is not a vetted, neutral news article.

My husband works a second job at a very well known company (we live upstate). Not ONE person at his indoor worksite wears a mask. He doesn't want to go "against culture" by wearing one. They share meals, cakes, have meetings... no one wears masks. There is definitely resistance.

Exactly, you can find anything that fits your own implicit bias or echo chamber if you want. Obviously, a scientist op/ed is more substantive than some nutjob video on YouTube but still, unless it's a neutral article it will only uphold your opinion.

And I have not seen anyone in Target or Stop n Shop or the liquor store or the local bagel shop without one since the mandate was put into place.

Then you are fortunate. Places I have been and encountered people without a mask:

BJ's East Setauket (at least one person every single time I've been there)
Guinta's Meat Farms Pt Jeff (also, at least 1 person every time I've been there)
Target South Setauket (although, I haven't been to Target at all in May, so last month)
Stop & Shop South Setauket (again, not in May, back in April - although early April when the order first went into effect)

1 person out of how many? A lot of people didn't realize it was mandatory when it first started. Also, some people can't wear them for medical reasons. 1 or 2 people each time you shop... it's easy enough to avoid them.

We probably live in the same town since these are all close to me; while I haven’t been to a public place since March, I do work 3 days a week at the hospital and every time I pass by places on 347 or parks I see people out just as if it was any old spring day...

I go to the office once a week, and every week I notice the traffic getting heavier and heavier, and the parking lot at Bj's/Walmart fuller and fuller.

When I see a post that says "article by a scientist" that is what I expect - not an opinion piece.

Exactly, you can find anything that fits your own implicit bias or echo chamber if you want. Obviously, a scientist op/ed is more substantive than some nutjob video on YouTube but still, unless it's a neutral article it will only uphold your opinion.

Very few neutral articles out these days.

I did not misuse the term article. The definitions make that clear.

People were saying, listen to the experts! The scientists! This man is one. Public health at Johns Hopkins (the university of which, by the way, is opening in the fall - I have it on authority - I guess they don’t like science there, at that world renowned science school). The very makers of the pandemic map! He is a scientist and has an opinion you don’t like.

Sorry if that goes against the thought police.
