I think they should definitely prepare--- for good quality coordinated and effective online education.
Yup. Not sure what people expect schools to do about busing, bathrooms, mealtimes, supplies, etc.
I am not trying to be snarky at all but honestly is the grand plan really going to be not allowing the human race to have any contact with each other for years to come?
I'm trying to figure that out as well....in all seriousness.
Exactly! What happens when the next virus comes out of China? Because honestly, isn't that a pretty common thing? No one should have contact ever again just in case a few thousand people get sick. Do people understand the size of our population? The amount of people currently getting sick is so minute. We were told to lock down to flatten the curve, so the hospitals aren't overrun with people. That's done. The navy ship left, the Javits center was never near capacity. The hospitals can handle it. If you want to keep you kid home, if you want to stay locked down the rest of your life, go the fukk ahead and do that. The rest of us need to get back to work and living our lives. How the **** do they expect parents to work, if we have to teach our kids online? Implementing more expensive "online learning programs" is pointless. Kids do not sit still for that shit. What should we all do? Beat our children into submission?
What will happen, is more "daycares" will open up and take the older kids. They will implement a curriculum and guess the **** what, it's just like the kids being in school.
I swear, the people that want to stay locked inside just completely lack common sense. Must be nice to be so privileged that you cannot see that most parents (especially with the cost of living around here) have to work and cannot be there all day to hold their kids hands. How many new cases have there been daily in NYS? Out of MILLIONS OF PEOPLE! I can't believe we're talking about remote learning for Sept...Unreal. What happens in July when 3 people get sick?

I agree with everyone. I am not saying I agreed with the principal- at all. I want my kids back in school. In September, I will have all 5 kids in school full time. DS in 4th, DS in 2nd, twin DD's in K, and DD in Pre-K. I can't imagine my girls K experience being half ass like that.

my school district and the teachers have done a phenomenal job the past two months trying to keep things going and it is not their fault, but online learning isn’t even in the same hemisphere as in-school instruction
Oh, have you studied online instruction? I have. It is possible to be done well. That is my personal preference as I am not sending my kids to school to potentially pick up this virus risking their and my family's health.

I definitely want my kids back in school. But for everyone saying open everything up ASAP...have you seen your older relatives? Parents? Grandparents? (Not in a social distancing situation)
I just don’t understand the logic between wanting to be out and about, have our kids in school when we don’t even feel safe having our parents come over to our house, or go over to their house.

Oh, have you studied online instruction? I have. It is possible to be done well. That is my personal preference as I am not sending my kids to school to potentially pick up this virus risking their and my family's health.
Online instruction can be done well- if academics are all that matter. But there is so much more to it. Children with IEP's, with parents who work and cannot support their child's education full time, people who will not be able to pay their bills or buy food if they quit their jobs to stay home for child care reasons, etc.
This is NOT realistic. At all, for children to spend an entire school year at home.

I will answer this. No we have not seen my parents except for 5 minutes across the driveway on Sunday. This is because MY PARENTS are very scared of the virus and do not want us near them. I will respect their wishes entirely and if they want to stay in their house forever, that is their right and their choice. However. If they suddenly decided that they would have us over or come over our house then yes - I would be comfortable with that.

You don’t feel you’d be putting them at risk of illness? Or you’re confident that if they became ill they would recover?
Would you feel the same way if you were back to work and kids were back in school? (I don’t know your particular work or child situation so sorry if it doesn’t pertain to you)

We have not seen grandparents but by September I certainly expect we will be, which is the time frame we’re all taking about with school.

Whenever anyone, online or in real life, says that they believe this or that or predicts this or that, I always want to know their credentials or at least see the numbers or statistics that they're working with.
We are living through a true disaster/emergency. Like so many generations of our ancestors have before us. I don't know anyone who doesn't miss the beautiful life they had before this. Anyone who isn't grieving some loss. Anyone who isn't anxious about the future.
What I can't understand is the rage and railing against those qualified to uphold public health. The contempt for science and scientists and doctors that I see in some of the propaganda circulating. The rage at people who are informed by science and scientists as they make decisions that are necessary and informed by real data provided by real experts.

Yes and do you want to know why I do not fully trust these “experts?” Because the experts and scientists have been wrong on many occasions (not just with Covid but a lot of things over the years). Because these experts DISAGREE WITH EACH OTHER - so which to believe? Because like it or not, the general public is very often LIED TO for political, monetary, or other reasons. Regarding Covid, I am tired if seeing all the numbers and graphs and models be completely wrong over and over again, and yet we continue to rely on them to dictate 300 million lives.

I just can’t see how this would be a forever “new normal”. This is not the first virus that have existed (or at least type) and human life have adapted with time. If u look back in time, it has always happened that way, even with the always evolving flu! I don’t believe as time passes, we’ll be hit with huge waves whenever cities open up. I do believe in natural herd immunity. Of course ppl should be doing preventative things just like with the flu, like if u don’t feel good then stay home, wash ur hands properly, etc. Am I saying there will never be a death due to covid, ever? Absolutely not. There will be (just like with any other virus) but def not to the degree that has happened. Viruses that keep ppl locked up have never happened before in the whole time humanity have existed and obviously we haven’t gone extinct because of a virus.
I always like your posts. They are the complete opposite of most people on social media who are so sure about the immediate death of all of humanity. Thank you!

I think that we are healthy and that the risk of dying is very low and that sometimes the benefits outweigh the risks. We can enjoy the time we have left with each other doing things that make us happy. Or, my folks can never leave their house again, never hug their grandkids again, never see another human again, never eat out again, be lonely and sad and miserable for years, and die alone in their house having lost years of their life anyway.

I did my masters degree online and it worked, but I feel it worked because it was made to be online and I was a grown up that signed for online instruction. We are talking about kids trying to adapt to a new way of learning. DS is in 9th grade and he definitely feels the difference and he feels his teachers were not ready for this. And I know his teachers are doing their best, but unfortunately it can't compare at all with regular lessons at school.

I saw my uncle and aunt this past weekend. I felt like the risk were low and I my uncle wanted to see me! I think by September my son needs to be in school, he is struggling even worse than ever before. But my son is also healthy, I don’t know what to do for kids like my nieces who have horrible allergies and asthma.
I also don’t want things opened ASAP, but I think we need to start moving a little faster. I think the decisions that are being made to stay locked down this long aren’t thinking of the well being of ALL our fellow New Jersians/New Yorkers. We aren’t looking at the whole picture, and it’s really scary when you see all sides of what is happening.
My sister and I had been helping families, and if you saw the state some of these families are in, it would tear your heart out. We’re talking about normal Functioning families before this and now had their whole life ripped apart, torn upside and physically starving. They are losing it all.

I haven’t seen my parents except from across the lawn, my brother i haven’t seen in 2 months either nor my father in law or BIL and his kids. I miss my family and friends so much. My closest friend is having her second baby tomorrow and I’m so sad I can’t be there for them but I’m choosing to distance from everyone. I work in the hospital and am exposed daily. I don’t want to get others sick. Family said they are fine seeing us outside etc but I would never forgive myself passing this to others so FaceTime is it for now :-/

This is a fantastic question. I think we need a universal answer. I think we need to reopen the schools, but there will always be those parents that are afraid. I think the best to open the schools, give parents the *option* of homeschooling. Teachers 60 years and older can be in charge of those students remotely.
If someone tests positive, that person leaves and is quarantined for 14 days. It would be too much work to isolate all the classes. At some point, we need to assume there is a risk. Either you are willing to send your kids or not. But we pay enough in taxes that we should have the option.

I like this! However, I would wait till the persons test comes back negative. One of my family members has had it for over a month and is still testing positive.
Maybe If it’s a student that tested positive, test the teacher only because the risk in adults is higher?

It's been 2 months today since we've seen my parents. They are an hour and a half away so we can't just go and drive by easily. We used to see them once a week. It's so sad. My dad is on medications for cancer so he's high risk and is taking social distancing very seriously.
We see my inlaws daily. My FIL fell and my DH needs to help him every day. He has serious underlying conditions but, tested positive for Covid over a month ago and remained asymptomatic. He's getting tested for antibodies tomorrow.

We see them now, we see just about everyone now. They are over it, we are over it. There is more of a chance of us dying in a car accident, than dying from the virus. I don't see anyone selling their cars.

I'm sure it is possible, many homeschoolers I know that chose that way of life do it well. But, you have parents who still need to work, and their younger children need guidance while doing school work. And they can't go to work outside of the home if there is no school for the kids to go to during the day. It doesn't work no matter how you try to justify it.

Scientists and public health experts are certainly the experts for that aspect of this disaster. However there is another aspect to consider - the economy. And that has its own experts. THOSE experts are predicting that if schools are closed in September that we will enter a depression. Mass scale unemployment is its own health hazard and has its own well-documented association with premature death. To deride anyone who dares to bring up this valid point as an ignoramus is just a cheap way to shut the conversation down.
I say this as someone who is begrudgingly accepting that schools can’t open in the fall. And I’m also willing to lose my job rather than send my kids to camp this summer.
There are just many things to consider.

Yes all of you touting the scientists, have you ever bothered to listen to the experts in the field of economics? Honestly some people on this thread are so one sided it's insane. Have any of them considered what will happen to the millions who lost their jobs who no longer have health insurance for them and their families???
