Also IF camps open and I don't think they will you can't compare it to being in school. My son's camp they are outdoors all day with a small group of kids not stuck in a two by nothing room with 33 kids

If you don't think camps or schools can open what do you think is the best way to ensure children are properly cared for and educated when their parents return to work?

Great question.

I really think people believe we shouldn't be returning to work either....

Bingo.

And to quote the great King of cuomovirus, “Deal with it.”

"IT'S NOT DEATH!!!!"

I haven't been a huge Cuomo fan lately, but I really pose this question to the teachers. I want to know what they feel an appropriate alternative is.

I'm not asking to incite anyone or rant about teachers, I honestly want to know what they feel is the best solution.

That is why I said I truly believe there are some people...not Cuomo in particular...just average citizens...that think schools should stay closed and we should stay home from work like this for much longer.
That's their solution...to stay like this until sometime nexr year..schools closed, offices closed, etc

Well....it's not the first time men in power said women should abandon careers and stay home with their kids.

As evidenced by the two of us and several other women on here, they haven't won yet.

They have to figure something out. I want to think school will re-open in the fall but it will have to be based on the numbers in August or even July. They need to plan. All I know is that our economy can not and will not recuperate so long as schools are closed.

TBH, I feel sorry for teachers and I bet there are a bunch who are worried for their jobs. No phys ed? Why do we need phys ed teachers then? Or any specials for that matter? Need to cut back on kids? Get rid of kindergarten! Not mandated and there goes a whole grade and a bunch of teachers. I don't think anyone is safe here. Not to mention the stress put on them for adapting to this new teaching "life", if they have to enforce mask wearing - God help them, trying to adapt to a new schedule. It's not easy for them either. And don't forget they are parents too! This whole thing is a shit show.

And to the OP, my son is supposed to start Kindergarten this year too. I will feel awful if he misses that experience.

The more I think about this the more I just want to run away....except there is nowhere to run. Kids NEED school, I'm sorry, they do. I just don't see what is going to change between now and September. I also think that IF camp can happen this summer (big IF at this point), it will be very telling as to what happens in September. If camp proceeds and the hospitalizations do not significantly increase, then it will be a good indicator that schools should be okay too.

Fauci is on a power trip as big as Cuomo. They live in their own little bubbles and I really just don't think they see, or care, about the big picture.

If camps open and we reopen and the curve stays relatively flat there is no reason not to open schools full time.

And if god forbid they don’t, then at least half the teachers (at least in elementary school where my kids attend) are now unnecessary. I want them laid off immediately. Maybe if they had to join the rest of us in fearing for our jobs they may be more willing to fight their unions to return to work.

Ridiculous, bitter statement...

Agree. The incessant disdain and lack of respect for teachers never ceases to amaze me. Chat Icon

What a horribly bitter statement to say. You may think they are doing nothing, but they are doing something. And to wish someone to be laid off is a horrible thing to say in this environment. We might as well get all Lord of the Flies here and start wishing that parents get laid off because they are probably so distracted by having their children at home that their Home Office isn’t allowing them to work to their potential. I mean it’s not good for society in general to have a partly functioning workforce, so give the jobs to those that don’t have children since they can work without as many distractions.

*for the record I don’t believe either argument, but I do believe that it’s a horrible thing to wish someone being laid off in this climate. We all aren’t working to our full potential. I don’t know what makes the original quote think she is above that.

I don’t think schools should stay closed and we should stay locked up forever but I don’t think they are just going to open up like normal in September without them then being closed very quickly after that for the rest of the year. When you’re thinking about school you are thinking about your nice Long Island school with 20 kids in 1st grade where mommy and or daddy can drop the kid at school if there is no bussing. You are not thinking of NYC schools where you are now putting all these kids on public transportation and you have 33 kids in a classroom.
So schools might open in September yes but I think it’s going to look very different then we are used to. A and B schedules for example. Morning and afternoon classes maybe. Or alternating weeks. Something is going to be different and I wish I knew what that was because I have a child in school as well that misses it desperately. But i don’t think it’s as simple as saying schools will open as normal and let teachers figure out how to deal with keeping masks on kids and cleaning.

I’m a teacher and mom. I can’t continue to teach my son. He needs socialization. He needs his mom to be his mom, not his teacher.

With that said, I don’t know what the best solution is. I feel like HS could potentially do a hybrid model, but I do not think that will work for the elementary level. I personally know two people on the reimagine education council. They are both HS teachers with elementary age students. I hope they have some awesome ideas...

We’re moving to a district where we will be paying well over $20k in taxes FOR THE SCHOOLS.

I like and respect Fauci but he’s off his damn rocker if he thinks people won’t go bananas if school doesn’t open.

Yup. I was just thinking that I'll be paying 15k in taxes for homeschooling (which is a struggle to get them to do).

I have NEVER said a bad word about teachers. I have so much respect for them and don’t think they make nearly enough money (ftr the average teacher in my district makes more than I do). But what I have seen these past two months has been an absolute DISGRACE. I have a friend who teaches and she was honest in saying they are under a lot of pressure from their union to not to more. That’s disgusting. I have a problem with the unions and the only ones who can stop it are the teachers.

If my kids don’t go back to school FULL TIME in September I will get laid off. So it’s them or me. I’m not sorry I feel this way. Cuts WILL have to be made. If I have to homeschool my kids I sure as hell don’t need someone sending me six YouTube links a day. I can figure that out myself thanks.

This is true in some districts. Two of the parents I am friends with were saying the same thing! They work in what I perceive as two of the better districts on the island and they were told to cut back. One is a HS science teacher. He was giving them a lesson and a ditto to complete each week. Now he was told to half it so he gives the kids the lesson and then the following week the ditto. Which means the kids have to do the lesson twice so they can remember how to answer the ditto. I'm sure the parents are complaining about what a useless PITA he is as a teacher but meanwhile that is what he is told to do.

It's funny that my teacher friends are being told to cut back because PARENTS are complaining about the amount of work that they are giving and not from the union. Admin is getting emails from parents telling them that they can't expect their kids to be doing x number of lessons a week and to cut back.

Re: Fauci

Who is picking these kids up during these half day hybrid sessions? And if they still continue after care to send your kids to, what’s the point of ending early if they are still in school? To take your money?

I know when I worked from home, I had meetings that popped up in the middle of the day and I couldn’t always say , wait I have to get my son at 12pm - can’t make this meeting. Emergencies yes, but that will not be conducive for working people.

Also they want all the companies to work remote. Do people not care about Manhattans economy at all? You think companies are going to pay ridiculous rent for Manhattan, when they aren’t using the buildings? Some were already relocating or moving to full remote to save overhead costs, is the plan to fully send Manhattan real estate under and destroy NYC?

Not one person who thinks schools should stay closed has answered: who is watching these kids during this 100% distance learning or fantasy hybrid schedule when their parents have to go into the office or even work from home? When nails salons, spas, retails stores, medical and dental offices open - who is watching these kids? Those employees can’t work from home?

Well Fauci clearly scared people. Los Angeles is extending house arrest for 3 more months and California State University is not holding Fall semester on any of its 23 campuses.

And its only mid May.

WTF is going on.

I don't like him, nor do I trust him.

Oh they def are! Unions know teachers should be payed more for doing all the extra work and they won’t, that’s why they’re being told to cut back.

Yep! I don't think it has anything to do with unions or teachers wanting to do less. Parents and kids are overwhelmed and the schools are responding to that imo.

Healthcare workers wear masks all day.

I don’t know, if my options are school with mask or no school, I’m voting mask.

Thank you. That was exactly my point. I hear everyone saying that their kids have to go back to school in the fall and they do not want under any circumstance for there to be distance learning again. Well masks are the only solution for that and commonly used in many other countries - for yes even elementary school children. People seem so entitled for the 'normal' sometimes but then don't want to make any sacrifices until they are pushed up against the wall.

Listen they can make them wear masks if that makes them feel better, but I'm just saying- unless a teacher can be on top of 25 kids all at once, all day long, it won't be very effective.
Kids Touching them, adjusting them, taking them off, etc
Then lunch. Then snacks.
Then they have to take them off to drink water- and my DD drinks water all day long.
Then the kids with sensory issues who will be throwing fits and tantrums with them on
It sounds good on paper- the practice isn't going to be so easy.
But yeah, if she can go back to school- i'll send her with a mask. What happens after that... who knows

But I just can't listen to all the doom and gloom anymore. I get the footnotes on news and thats as much as I can handle these days.

ETS: As for all the negative teacher comments, its amazing how fast that turned from all the positive comments they were receiving just 2 months ago when all this started.

It’s not entitled, it’s called being realistic. Hello! You think kids are going to be able to wear masks all day, and that’s exactly what teachers need another thing to yell at their students about. It’s also known to make people light headed and dizzy when worn for extended periods of time, something else to think about.

Teachers will have to worry about hand washing, social distancing, Cleaning, Mask and oh yes can you please also educate my kid properly. If anything that sounds entitled. I rather the buildings be clean and hand washing/sanitizing be enforced than add masks that probably won’t be as effective with kids.

No one said their kids can’t wear masks, we just aren’t being blind sheep and ARE thinking realistically. It’s ok to think outside the box sometimes.

And there is a NEED for these kids to go back school, this isn’t some entitled luxury or want. It’s vital for working parents, student development and the economy. Not some random entitled wish list item for parents.

ETA: and yet no one has answered who will watch these kids if schools don’t open!

and I completely agree with all of this. But kids adapt so much better than adults. A big part of schooling might have to be teaching them mask etiquette and good hygiene practices, etc. Then in a year or two it would be like being bilingual, you just learn it and integrate it into your life. It would be a natural routine/habit. People say 'oh just have the kids wash their hands', (which is also important and should be happening) but everyone is touching the same handle and my DD does not wash her hands correctly without someone watching her. It's still extra work for the teacher to have to stop teaching and monitor all of that. I've seen so many kids who don't properly wash. So they can claim the kids get to wash their hands but put those hands under that special light that can show how well they washed off the germs and you'll probably see the hand washing didn't make a dent.

This. My administration tells me what I can and can not do in terms of teaching. Initially, we were only suppose to do asynchronous learning. I would film a lesson and put it up on Monday. Students then had an activity that was based on the lesson. The also had to complete a discussion prompt, where they could see what other students were thinking. At the HS level, each subject can only give 2-2.5 hours of work. My assignments take high level, self motivated students probably 45-60 minutes and lower end students 2+ hours.

Last week, we were informed that we should start to have at least one session of synchronous learning a week. While it is not mandated, it is being encouraged. I added office hours once a week. (I actually did office hours at the very beginning, but didn't have any kids "show up".) If it goes well this time, I have no problem adding more opportunities for live learning.

I think teachers are just doing what they are told by their administration.

What will happen is the parents will get emails about their kids not wearing masks, losing masks, forgetting to put them back on and it’s going to be our fault like we have control over the situation.

I yell at my son everyday to put his mask on before he leaves the house to walk the dog. Mind you this kid walks the dog like 3x a day and still forgets. He loses them despite me telling him to put it in his jacket pocket. Chat Icon

Can you imagine him in school? Kid can’t even remember to bring a math book from one class to the other. Good luck with him at school!!!

What happens after that... who knows

and I completely agree with all of this.

My DS has practiced wearing a mask at home. Honestly, he hasn't complained about it once. He has worn it for an extended period of time and he just turned 6. He has even worn it on walks around the block - his choice. The only issue I see is when he needs to put it back on after eating, but someone would just need to help him and the other young students.

You're misunderstanding. You think the kids NEED to go back to school but think masks are thinking inside the box and unrealistic? You seem stuck inside the box because if you are sending your child back to school - what about it is changing in your opinion that makes it different from how school was in feb or march? Are you just saying you want everyone to get sick? That the desire to have them in school, that normalcy, negates the danger of the virus? What is your non-sheep, thinking out of the box ideas then?

Healthcare workers wear masks all day.

I don’t know, if my options are school with mask or no school, I’m voting mask.

Thank you. That was exactly my point. I hear everyone saying that their kids have to go back to school in the fall and they do not want under any circumstance for their to be distance learning again. Well masks are the only solution for that and commonly used in many other countries - for yes even elementary school children. People seem so entitled for the 'normal' sometimes but then don't want to make any sacrifices until they are pushed up against the wall.

Agree.

This isn't about "entitlement", it's about being practical. Masks in some other countries are a cultural norm and if that is how you're raised and it's all you know then a mask isn't a big deal. But for kids in America who have never had that restriction, it's not so easy. Any parent, especially those with young kids like myself, should recognize that getting a kid to wear a mask for HOURS on end is just not practical. It's not going to work, especially the younger the kids are.

As for schools opening, it's not possible to socially distance the kids. Even more impossible in city schools where they shove 35 kids in a tiny classroom. It's also not practical to wear masks all day or even do staggered schedules and half days. Kids will be getting HALF the education in that scenario and that is so detrimental. ALL the schools can do is encourage hand washing, set up stations around the schools with antibacterial gel, limit large gatherings in the auditoriums and gyms AND implement a more broad and frequent disinfecting and cleaning schedule. That's really about it.

My DD hasn't had any issues with hers. She never complains about wearing it when needed. But I agree, taking it on and off for eating or drinking is an added problematic spot. And running around during gym it wouldn't be feasible probably. So maybe masks won't work out - but then distance learning will remain. Like there are only so many options floating around right now. Who knows what the new normal will become. Someone will be unhappy about it no matter what. But that's every big life event.
