Boo! My daughter had one last week for her bday and it made her so happy. We set up music and decorations outside and it lifted everyone's spirits. One Debbie downer passserby complained that we were blocking the road. ??. It makes kids feel special and the few that we went to my kids looked forward to making signs etc. Who cares about the honking-
When I thought of having one my friend said maybe it wasn't a good idea bc neighbors may not like the honking I was
Smh thinking what kind of curmudgeon would Be bothered by that ?!? Now I know!

This is totally meant lightheartedly btw . I'm on my last nerve with everything these days so I get where yuh are coming from.!! Chat Icon

Me. There is no more grating sound in the world to me than honking, it goes through me like nails on a chalkboard. Plus the fact that I don't get these parades at all. Thank God it isn't a thing by me.

Paraded out...

My son's 9th birthday is on Monday, he doesn't want one. He said it would make him too sad that nobody could stay or get out of their cars. But we have been to so many. Today we went to one for a girl in my DD's class. They are cute, it's just sad that this is how we celebrate these days. I just can't wait for this to be over.

i am in my 30s and my family of 4 cars did this for me this week and it made my day. i was part of one for my cousins kid last week and it literally brought me joy to be part of a celebration, celebrating anything. may is a popular birthday month anyway, but i really think these are an awesome response to a crummy situation.

Re: Paraded out...

News12 just said about people doing it for Mothers Day. Oh please no. I can’t deal listening to that all day long.

Aw, I’m sorry you feel that way. My daughter’s friends organized one for her 13th birthday yesterday and she said it was the best part of her day!

aww, this was very sweet.

I think for those not involved in these types of events it can be annoying but when you're part of it the fee is different

ETA - We only participate in ones for friends as well - it gets too much and seems weird to partake in them for people we don't know well.

Yesterday I took my two little guys out for a ride. They insisted on wearing their Mario and Luigi costumes which was fine because we weren't going anywhere anyway. We ended up passing a bday parade and they were screaming for me to jump in the parade. I momentarily thought about it because, why not? Who cares? It's someone beeping and yelling Happy birthday but then I thought it would be just too weird with Mario and Luigi. Chat Icon (the real reason they love the parades is because I let them stand through the moon roof)

And my mom accidentally ended up in the middle of one when she went turned at a stop sign intersection and didn't realize. I was on the phone with her. She was like "Well, I guess I should just keep going at this point." and then I hear her beeping and yelling Happy birthday. I was dying. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Wait, so they would've been dressed as Mario and Luigi randomly participating in a stranger's bday parade just screaming out of the moon roof? Chat Icon Best story I've heard in a while lol you should've let them. I bet the bday kid would've gotten a kick out of it. I nominate your kids to crash every bday parade in character from now on! They really know how to party! Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon They wear those costumes everywhere! They love them! And yes it would have been hilarious TO ME but I didn't know if the birthday person would have thought it was too weird. But now that I'm getting the green light here I may do it! LOLChat Icon

I kinda disagree. Look, it's for kids to make their day in the sucky situation. I don't mind going. My boys complain for a moment only bc they have to stop what they are doing (maybe in the middle of a video game or something LOL), but the moment we pull up they go out the window or sunroof and wave at their friends and we all love making the banners and wishing the bday kid a very Happy Birthday.
We always get a big "thank you" from the parents or birthday person how happy and special they felt.
So the answer is No... I am not "paraded out" bc A. we are not doing ANYTHING right now in our lives and B. it makes someone's day.
Now... if we are doing it another round of this next year for bdays then yes I will be paraded out. LOL
Just be happy for people or don't go.

Paraded out...

I was part of one yesterday b/c a friend of ours is 1 year sober. Thankfully, that's the only one I've been a part of and I don't tend to see them since I live in a town home community that mostly has retired people.

I have received 3 invites on Facebook to be a part of birthday parades. I guess this is the norm now.

I think the kids are over it too. My daughter's bday is next week and she has no desire for one.

Re: Paraded out...

They are doing one sort of to drop off the kids stuff and I’m so annoyed. My son doesn’t even want to go but I’m making him. If I have to suffer in a car line waiting for my turn to drop off his books, to see the teacher from a distance for 5 seconds and wave then, he has to as well.

It’s going to be a mad house and so backed up. I’m so peeved about this. Bah humbug, lol.

One of my daughters classmates had a birthday parade a few weeks ago at a local park. We were the only ones to show up besides the teacher. I felt bad, we ended up just getting out and hanging out with the family and singing happy birthday. The mom also set up a zoom class birthday and not one classmate was on the zoom. This was for a 7 year old. I don’t see any harm taking a little out of my day to make someone else’s day. I was so glad we brought a gift...

haha, I made my kids come with me too. It took 2 seconds for each kid. They are in different schools and had different days. It was much less painful than I anticipated. It was literally less than 30 seconds.

Awww poor kid! That was nice of you to bring a gift. I always bring one too. My kids already got gifts from their classmates because their parties were before the lock down, so I feel like it has to be reciprocated. At first I felt weird about it, wondering if they are the type to be afraid of catching the virus from the packaging. But all of the parents message me afterwards to express their appreciation.

It's so sad that fewer people are showing up. I feel like everyone is over it. The last one we went to was for a classmate and there were only a few cars. I still dislike the random invites on FB to drive past strangers houses, but we're def going to make it a point to continue going to the ones for people we know.

Re: Paraded out...

This is why I'm kind of glad my DD doesn't want one. I don't want to make people feel obligated to drive by my house and honk when I know everyone is over it and the weather is nice and they want to be out doing other things all day.
And then to worry nobody will show. Ughhhh
Gives me anxiety actually .
thankfully she has a few friends who we've been hanging with and she can have a real albeit much smaller than normal pool party at home.

Yes, I'm paraded out, but we continue to do them anyway because they make the child feel SO good and happy.

DD turned 5 a couple of weeks ago and she still talks about all the honking she got for her bday. She asked if she can have one again next year.

So while I'm over them, I still participate in all that we're invited to b/c I'd want my friends to do the same for my children. Plus it's still way faster than a bday party!

We've actually done a bunch for strangers with Strong Island Car Parades and Long Island Hero Squad. My kids love them. I'm happy to bring a light sunshine to kids whose birthday plans were changed by the virus.

Exactly what my husband says. No need for the horns. Drive by, stop wave, whatever but it is annoying for everyone else not involved in it.

Ahh they will get over it as us summer babies never got parties because it was too hard to get everyone in once place at one time with people going away for vacations and you know the lack of technology lol.

Well I'm happy that my son will have a smile on his face. He didn't have many friends parties due to crippling anxiety and now he takes medication that makes it possible for him to celebrate with larger groups of friends. Last spring, we had to cancel his laser tag party because he broke his arm and needed surgery. This year, we booked a ninja party which had to be cancelled.

My brother was a summer birthday and he always had a birthday party and plenty of friends came. We mailed invites.
