Source of New COVID Infections

Did anyone watch Cuomo today?

He said that over the past 3 days the hospitals surveyed the new people coming into hospitals with the virus.

The MAJORITY of them (I believe 66%) are people who are NOT working and who have been staying at home. So these are not essential workers. These are not people riding trains. These are people staying at home. I think even he was surprised by this.

I know people will probably think (and it may be true) that this is because all these people caught it at the grocery store. But I also think that people who have been consistently staying at home have indeed lowered their immune system so that if they were exposed to the virus, they were more at risk to get it.

I have screen shots of his graphics with all the metrics but don't know how to upload them to this site.

Also, despite the foregoing, the fact is that the new cases ARE going down. There were 600 new cases yesterday in all of New York State.

Re: Source of New COVID Infections

This was just posted on the NY Times update page:

Cuomo released preliminary findings on Wednesday of a three-day survey of 113 hospitals in the state, covering nearly 1,300 patients.

Among their findings:

7 percent of hospitalized people are from New York City.

In New York City, 45 percent of hospitalized patients are African-American or Latino.

22 percent entered the hospital from a nursing home or assisted living facility.

59 percent were over 60 years old.

Only 3 percent in New York City had been taking public transportation.

96 percent had other underlying health problems.

37 percent were retired and 46 percent were unemployed. Only 17 percent were employed.

“That says they’re not working, they’re not traveling, they’re predominantly downstate, predominantly minority, predominantly older,” Mr. Cuomo said.

“We were thinking that maybe we were going to find a higher percentage of essential employees who were getting sick because they were going to work — that these may be nurses, doctors, transit workers. That’s not the case.”

I strongly believe that the most recent cases after somewhat of a decline; are all the people that celebrated Easter with extended families even though they weren't supposed to.

When Easter came; I knew that in two weeks; we would see that curve go up! And it did.

But no one seems to mention that.Chat Icon

Yes - 600 people went to hospital in NY. Cuomo says that is still obnoxiously high. Obviously he wants it to be zero.

Yes - 96% had underlying conditions. Which I guess made them suffer worse symptoms that made them go to the hospital.

The curve isn't going up. Hospitalizations were at an all time low today.

Yep makes no sense at all. Unless people living with them are bringing it in and they don’t go out much, how is the majority of people not essentials?

How strict is that "underlying health problems" statement though? I see this thrown around so much, but what does that really mean? What if you take cholesterol or blood pressure medication? if its controlled w/ meds- is that considered an underlying health problem? What about exercise induced asthma? What if you are 25 lbs overweight? dont most people have at least some kind of health issue?? I wish they were clearer with setting definitions on what exactly a "underlying health problem" really means. I see terms like Lung disease, Obesity and Hypertension as the major 3 risk factors- but even within that umbrella, there is a lot of overlap.

Yes even my husband who doesn’t pay much attention to the briefings said the numbers are as low as they were in March.

Good point, that also crossed my mind..its at least a 2 week incubation period so that fits the timeline..Mid April large group gatherings = symptoms in late April/early May and here we are.

Also did Cuomo really say 600 new cases in all NY state? I am waiting to see what the NYS Covid Tracker shows- its usually updated by 2 pm daily.

NY State Covid Tracker Stats:https://covid19tracker.health.ny.gov/views/NYS-COVID19-Tracker/NYSDOHCOVID-19Tracker-Map?%3Aembed=yes&%3Atoolbar=no&%3Atabs=n

They don't really track total cases, only new cases admitted to the hospital. Because the point of all of this is to not overwhelm the hospitals, not to stop people from getting it. 600 people were admitted to hospitals yesterday. Compared to over 1,000 a day for pretty much the whole month of April. Huge improvement. I do not see any "Easter" increase in numbers.

Which CA county are you in? I've been binge reading all the county stats for different states

LA County Covid Stats

I like how they actually name the specific hospitals and the # of positive cases..I wish NY had that but the whole hospital system in NY is a mix of public/private and the data comes in piecemeal stages.

I'm actually talking about the increase that started beginning of last week; that worked its way into this week.

That spike, IMO, was Easter/Passover gatherings.

Again, just my theory......

This is only my opinion, but I do not believe that Easter caused all that much of a spike. It's not like we thousands of new hospitalizations from people seeing relatives on one day. I never even saw a spike of more than like 100 people statewide. That small amount is not causing the curve to go up.

Chat Icon EXACTLY!

They have still come in contact with someone who had it. Could have passed a nurse in a supermarket, maybe they don't lysol down their amazon boxes in the mail, they could have a neighbor who doesn't realize they had it and they talk face to face outside.... all of my neighbors have "been at home" but i see them swapping spit with so many other neighbors its gross. I've been backing away. It's sad and scary but that's how you protect yourself and others.

Re: Source of New COVID Infections

This is just anecdotal...but I spoke with a doctor and he told me that most of the new cases that have been coming up on LI are people who live with a lot of other people in dense housing areas. So if one person gets it, then most of them do. He said it is very unlikely someone like me would get it from a grocery store if I take the precautions of washing my hands and not touching my face. Again...it's just one doctor but it does make some sense and it also kind of explains why people are getting it "at home."

I agree with a PP who said what does staying at home look like.

My dad technically "stays at home." He is on leave from work, but is still out and about every single day. He must go to 2-3 stores a day - Target, Costco, BJs, ShopRite, Stop and Shop, etc. He goes for long walks at the beach and/or nearby parks. He uses the public restrooms at the beach. He drops off groceries at my aunt's house because he insists she is high risk, meanwhile he is 65, a former smoker with 911 complications in addition to a history of high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Meanwhile, I leave the house once a week (or less) to go grocery shopping. My DH has left the house like 3 times in 8 weeks and my DS has not left the house at all.

I would think so. Almost everyone I speak to has Mother's Day plans with extended family, in the house, either cooking or ordering in and think I'm crazy that I'll see my mom from her porch that day. I'm an essential worker , so I go out to work, but of the people I know who are working at home, they are all going out most days, supermarkets, home depot, target, cvs for things to do. I have friends who visit their parents who are in their 80s everyday. So yeah they may be "staying at home" but that just means not going to the office or school.
