I am devastated for my students and my son. I know this is for the best, but my area upstate has so few cases that many in my community are not taking it seriously and still hanging out with others anyway.

Not surprised by this but he did say only for the rest of the academic year. This shouldn’t be a surprise so many states had already announced school is out for the remainder of the academic year.
There is no way he is deciding now if it will stay closed in September but if he does decide to not open in September I will not be happy then!!!

Probably the right decision. How could you implement distancing in school? My 1st grader would be flipping out if he had to wear a mask in school. Would they take away small group learning? What happens at lunch and recess??
Maybe the older kids would get it, but the little ones would not.

The majority of the country have closed schools statewide for the remainder of the year. NY is one of the last to do so.

Exactly this. Although cases are going down, I do not believe there is enough time to thoroughly plan out and implement social distancing and sanitation procedures. A social distancing plan is a major undertaken and shouldn't be rushed just to get schools open for the last two months.
With that said, as a teacher I am incredibly said that this is how our year will end. These are the magic months in schools...testing is behind us, we have our groove going and our classroom community is the best it will be all year from April-June.

What other choice does he have? This is not the most controllable situation.
We have to give our kids credit. They CAN adapt. They are resilient. They WILL get through this.

Exactly. Virginia declared it in March and they are nowhere near us in cases.

While it was expected, I wish he gave districts flexibility to try out alternate day, half day or 1-2 day a week attendance optionally.
Looking at the bigger picture it seems Diblasio was right all along and Cuomo is just stringing everyone alone in 2 week increments.

He doesn’t want this to end as then he can’t hear his voice everyday and be important.

No other state has had as many cases as NY has and made the decision to close before NY did.

Any sort of scheduling is a major undertaking for schools. This would not be possible to fully plan and implement in the time that we have.

I’m still dying to know how any part of the economy can reopen without schools. Other states are opening a variety of businesses but not schools. Where are the kids? Are they home alone? Are they licking potentially COVID contaminated doorknobs in their parents’ workplaces? I want to know.

I’m pretty sure they won’t reopen come fall either. All they keep talking about is this “second wave” we will see in the fall. How are they going to open schools at the same time they are expecting the #s to rise again? It’s going to be impossible.
All the people who were talking about nothing going back to some sort of normal til 2021 don’t sound so crazy now.
I’m sorry to you all with children. And especially those who work as well. There needs to be answers of child care now that there is no school

I'm not surprised. I couldn't imagine the kids going back before June.
Hopefully by Sept everything will be OK for schools to reopen (I'm trying to be optimistic in this sh!t of a world we're in right now).
