Disinfecting Groceries?

Okay, how nuts are you going disinfecting every little item that gets delivered to you. I have a pretty hefty Peapod order due to come soon, and I'm starting to have anxiety about disinfecting every friggin thing in there!

Do you Lysol every single item? Clorox the jars? Throw out the cereal boxes, and then put the cereal into Tupperware? How far do you go? I swear I'm going to be in the loony bin by the end of this thing.

Re: Disinfecting Groceries?

Yeah for a few weeks now I’ve been lysol spraying the boxes outside
Letting them sit
Opening delivery box hours later with clorox wipes
Wiping down each item
Bringing it inside
Wiping it down with soap and water
Washing bananas and oranges

Cereal boxes I throw out box and keep the cereal in the bag

Purell my hands
Put everything away

Then change my clothes and take a shower

This is awful

Here's a helpful video about how to handle groceries.

It also covers take-out at the end.

Re: Disinfecting Groceries?

I was wiping everything down at first but now that no stores have had cleaning supplies for weeks I am running low on them and need to save what I have left. It's pretty much only me that touches the groceries anyway and I make sure to wash my hands a lot throughout the day even though we are just home in the house.

Re: Disinfecting Groceries?

I have a open black garbage bag on the floor and one on the kitchen island. As I come in with the bags, they go on the floor bag for emptying.

I pick up Each and every item (big and small) and wipe down with Lysol wipe. Changing wipes out every 4-5 items depending on how wet the wipe still is. As they get wiped, they are put onto the “clean” garbage bag on the island and everything sits til it dries. Then I put them away.

I put all produce in the sink and wash with warm water and soap and leave to dry. Bananas are separated from the bunch and I won’t buy grapes or other fruits I can’t wash in that way.

I’m doing all of this so that my house stays clean. We are still washing hands throughout the day but i don’t want to put creamer in my coffee and then wash my hands. Or grab a banana and wash my hands, etc etc etc.

For deliveries , I open the box outside and wipe it all down on the front steps and let dry before I bring in. For the mail, I bring it in and put it on paper towel or tin foil on the counter and let sit for 24 hours before we open it then obviously wash hands after handing it.

IT IS EXHAUSTING. I am being over cautious because an entire family I know now have it and they never left the house. Only went 1x to grocery store and then had groceries delivered for 3 weeks straight and they all got it towards the end of that 3 weeks. Only way is through food and packages purchased or mail.

I've been saying this for about 2 weeks now. I feel like the stores aren't getting any cleaning supplies or hand sanitizer. All these companies and NYS are now making hand sanitizer. Well where is it? Haven't seen any in stores since this started. My daughter in Alaska sent me stuff.

Someone found hand sanitizer at big lots today and for $1.00. Not over priced at all

Try looking in stores people don’t think of. Call ace hardware and see what they have in stock before going out.

Yup. The virus isn't going to jump off the package into your nose, so as long as you are washing your hands before you eat, you will be fine. People are really going nuts over this. I'm glad that NYS has set up a mental health line!

Again with the mental health jabs?

I get washing hands before eating, but if I just wanna grab a few pretzels from the bag, i like Knowing I can grab the bag and take some out without washing my hands before and after touching it and then putting them into my mouth using my hands without worry.

It’s a preference really. Not saying how could you NOT wash everything. But for me, knowing a full family of 7 who are all infected and the ONLY way had to be from groceries... I’m cleaning everything. No guarantees with any of it, but it makes ME feel safer to clean It all before I put away

And if I need mental health help because of that, that’ll be up to me to decide. Though I’m pretty sure there was a lot of people talking smack on those who took this seriously in the beginning who are now eating their words. So there’s that

Totally not a job. I said from the start that they should be addressing the mental health of this by offering *something*, because it's literally making people crazy. The isolation, the being in your home 24/7 with your family, the constant worry about whether the virus is on a particular surface, etc. And now worrying about wiping down every single grocery item. People are legit going crazy over this (My own mother included)

And where did a family of 7 get CV From their groceries? I've seen a story of a family of 7 from NJ, but that doesn't involve groceries.

Also, really, you should be washing your hands before grabbing a handful of pretzels. This is how it spreads within families. People tend to dismiss spread of illness from family members in same household. Hence the reason the stomach virus, strep, colds, the flu, etc. typically run through an entire house. I mean obviously do what you want, but I don't eat anything without washing my hands. Even when I grab a few chips. But, that's how I've always been!

If any makes any of the non grocery wipers feel better, I was on a call with a few of the virologists at work who were chuckling at the idea of "Clorox wiping the chicken." The chances of transmission through groceries is very low. Not zero, but super low. So if you're running low on sanitizing wipes its probably best to save the wipes for door handles, gas pumps, carts, etc.

Was just going to ask the same thing if this is the same family on the news.
I find it very hard to believe they got infected by just sitting at home. Sounds like there is more to this story.
Personally I am not wiping down everything as I never did before when people were shopping with the flu or pneumonia or whatever else they have had touching everything in the stores.
Be careful yes but the media is making some have so much anxiety and yes people with mental issues it is making it worse for them. I have a child with ADHD and other things who explode over things that could be a lot worse for them.

We are a household of 2 people. Both of us have been home for a month already due to my husbands surgery. The only person leaving the house is me and that is go get the groceries. So I don’t wash my hands every time I eat a chip. But I do disinfect clean all surfaces daily “just in case” I missed something

The family of 7 is out here in Suffolk county. It’s not a news story. Just a friend from school shared his personal story with his FB friends. They “guess” it’s the groceries being the entire family was home for 3 weeks before one got sick and it spiraled. The only thing hey did was grocery shop 1 week and then had groceries delivered after that because of fear of leaving.

After hearing that I became extra cautious with anything that comes in from outside. I don’t know who grabbed the gallon of milk before I did. From trucking, grocery clerks stocking shelves, other people grabbing it before me. Then I take it home and just put in the fridge? No. I wipe that thing down. With something like plastic, it can technically be placed in the sink and washed with reg soap and water as well not to waste wipes.

Anyone see the meme all over with the virus particles looking like snowflakes. It’s says if you could see it, you’d stay home? That’s how I look at this. It’s everywhere and I’m doing my best to keep us healthy through this whole thing. Again ... not saying if you DON’T, you’re wrong. It’s just tiring hearing people say if you do, you’re overreacting. I’d rather overreact.

I can't believe anyone gave 7 tests to one family. Test one.

We have doctors and nurses on the front lines who can't gets tests. The idea of wasting SEVEN of them on one family is disgusting. I think one could deduce that if one family member has it and the rest are all sick, they have the same thing. It's not rocket science.

I would guess it's from his actual grocery shopping, touching the cart, the keypad to pay, and all of that jazz, then not washing hands. Maybe touching his phone while in the store, calling up the wife "what do we need", then not wiping down the phone, using it later, etc. (I'm a germaphobe with that kind of stuff and always have been). As sensationalist as it sounds to get it from grocery delivery, eh, I'm not sure that's probably even the case. Could be, but I just don't really believe it. And then for them all to get it, that sucks! I've read a lot of instances where one person has it, isolated themselves and the rest of the household has been fine, which is good!

So i had googled this very topic when I saw this thread posted and did see a few articles that said something similar to what you just posted but I wasn't sure how reliable the source was so.I didn't want to post it.
Interesting to hear real life virologist are saying the same thing.
I just don't have it in me to go through such an exhausting process every time I shop.

They didn’t all get tested. 1 did and while waiting for results, isolated but it was too late and they all started to feel sick. The kids aren’t as bad as the parents. But none are bad enough to go to the hospital (and I hope it stays that way)

Not once did I say they all went and got tested. But if one person in the house is + and everyone gets sick, you assume that’s what it is because yea... they aren’t going to test 7 people for what is mostly likely the same virus

Re: Disinfecting Groceries?

Sounds like they probably came in contact with someone that 1 time they went to the grocery store. I haven't seen 1 doctor recommend wiping down every single grocery item with a sanitizer. I did watch a news segment that teaches the proper way to disinfect, but even they said it's not necessary at all.
