Corona and the Car

When out for my daily sanity drive I noticed that half the people driving their cars are wearing face masks & gloves. Inside their car.

I’m not talking about bus drivers or usps
or amazon... I’m talking regular people driving their own cars.
Am I missing something?

Also when I tell people we take our kids for a drive every afternoon just to break up the day so we don’t lose our minds at home, I get weird reactions like people telling me it’s “risky” or “why can’t you just stay in the house?” How is being together in our van for half an hour any different from being together in our house?
Again, am I missing something?

You're not missing anything.
It's fine to go for a drive.
I don't really get some people.

You don't need a mask in the car. That would be like wearing a mask in the house, which unless you're sick, is useless.

We go for drives all the time. There is nothing risky about your own car.

Re: Corona and the Car

The only reason I can think of wearing a mask in the car is taking it on and off can cause you to touch your face more, so they probably leave it on if they are in between stores.

It’s better to just put it on before you leave, do your errands and leave it on, and then remove it when you get home.

As for close quarters in a car... hmm I don’t know. You can’t follow social distancing in a car.

She’s driving with people she lives with. Should my husband not sleep in our bed so we can social distance?

OP I think people are scared and acting irrationally. Or, they just put the mask at home with intention of going to a store. I did that yesterday. Not because I felt like I needed it in the car. I don’t know why honestly. But actually I did remove it on the drive home. So you would have seen me in a mask driving to store.

Well, I guess I am an exception. I told my SO (who lived with me) to go back home and live with his mom or his other apartment. We have the luxury of a few places to live. If we didn’t have that luxury, then I would probably be sleeping on the couch, but that’s just me. He’s also around other people (he’s in IT, hardware and software) all day long.

I think they’re probably in the middle of running errands.
Maybe they had someone help properly fit their mask at home and are on their way to the store? Or don’t want to touch their face to remove it until they’re home and fully washed up.
Or maybe they’re driving someone to the doctor that they don’t live with?

I doubt the people you’re seeing are just joyriding with a mask on.

I've done that because sometimes the elastic makes your hair stick out over your ears. So I put it on- look it the mirror, fixed my hair and drove to the store.

I do believe the mental aspects of this are perhaps becoming worse in some cases than the physical.

If I have to stay locked in my room indefinitely away from my child and husband, scared to breath the same air as them, perhaps life is no longer worth living and I will just take my chances out there.

Re: Corona and the Car

I wore my mask and gloves to the supermarket on Monday. Put on in my house while hands were clean. Took gloves off in parking lot of supermarket (first I kept them on to pick up gloves on the ground on my way to the garbage) then removed my mask by the ear loops and threw in the garbage as well

So maybe you are seeing people heading somewhere

We go out for drives too and I’ve seen the same thing. Last week we drove down to the beach to watch the sunset from our car and some guy pulled up next to us with a mask on and he was by himself. He proceeded to get out of his car, pulled his hood on and wrapped a scarf around his mask, then walked down closer to the water to take pictures. There was no one else down there near him. It made me wonder if he was getting over being sick and protecting himself, since his actions were so over the top.

I know. I am talking about the general population who aren't going to work and school and are now being told in addition to that, don't go on a drive on your own car with your own family who you live with.
And distance from your own child even though you've all been home.
Plastic bubbles will be next

People are effing insane. And busy bodies, and want to control everyone. Some lady was complaining in our community group about people being out in their cars. It's insane to me.

Yes..I'm waiting for a run on plastic sheeting at home depot so people can seal all doors and windows from any ounce of outside air.

I've posted before about people in our community posting on FB that everyone should be stripping off their clothes at the door, immediately throwing them in the laundry and showering after going for a walk around the block. They're literally acting like it's the black plague. I mean even some of the responses here are like Chat Icon I just don't get it. I've had it with peoples ignorance.

See, that's the thing. I hear on here and on Facebook all this abundance of caution. But then when I'm out, same thing. People one on top of the other, in big groups, etc..

True. If solo car rides are banned..... it would follow suit that they cant leave the house I guess. Chat Icon

I hope that you didn’t toss into the trash a mask that you only wore once to the supermarket.
Unless you are sick or came into contact with someone that is sick that mask could be used again.
My sister & brother-in-law (nurse & doctor) both in private practice, thank God- have been using the same masks for weeks due to the shortage.
