Beginning the 3rd week of the kids not having school...

The novelty is wearing off, for everyone. At first, my kids were so excited to have "school" at the dining room table, zoom meet with their friends, and not have to be up at 6:30 to be outside waiting for the bus at 7:25.
This morning, my 7 yr old just started crying and asking when he will be able to go back to school. My almost 9 yr old is miserable, saying he is sick of this house, he even misses going out to run errands with us. He begged me to take him to Target. He heard DH & I talking last night about this going on for at least another month, with Trump's extension, and he lost it.
His 9th birthday is May 11th. He knows the odds are we won't be celebrating outside of this house. As adults, we know this has to happen to flatten the curve and save as many lives as possible. But, how do you explain that to kids without scaring them?

I wish I had an answer but I'm in a worse state than my daughter.
She starts online school today- they haven't had anything these past 2 weeks.
She seems fine but I am beside myself and unraveling more and more on a daily basis.

I hear ya, you are not alone. I cry myself to sleep most nights, and wake up so depressed. I know we need to do this- I understand this is necessary. So many people are losing their lives. But, the selfish part of me is thinking, "what if Trump's June 1st prediction is correct?" I CANNOT live like this until June 1st.
I genuinely worry that more people will begin to die of suicide, or turn to drugs and alcohol to get through this.

This is the worst part- when you have to WFH but also homeschool your kids. My son also gets teletherapy and i'm expected to sit with him through it. I can't do it all.

I'm in the same boat. It's overwhelming. I'm jealous of the people in Facebook that post about all the free time and creating memories with their kids. I'm just trying to get through the day same as you- working from home & trying to get the kids to do their work.

Beginning the 3rd week of the kids not having school...

I’m losing my mind. My kindergartener is so uncooperative. He fights me on the easiest lessons. I understand we’re trying to save lives but at what cost? There were millions of unemployment claims last week just in ny. Millions! That’s millions of people whose lives may be financially ruined not to mention all the businesses that will go under. I mean either way there are no good options for solving this but I’m really worried about how we are going to recover. And I hope schools are planning now for extra kids that will probably need additional services next year to catch up. But something tells me they’ll be scrambling in September.

The novelty has definitely worn off. My son, who is in Kindergarten, has been fighting me on everything. I am also really worried about how this is going to affect him socially. He has Sensory Processing Disorder and some social issues. He worked with a SEIT all last year to help him with his social skills. He does not seem to care at all that he hasn't seen any other kids (besides his sister).

I agree 100% regarding the economic impact but honestly, the numbers they are predicting for deaths even under the best of circumstances seems staggering. It's all so scary and I fear if we jump the gun and get back to life as we knew it too soon, this will all have been for nothing. We all just have to hang in there and stay home, miserable as that is.

As for school, we're managing but it's annoying nonetheless. My DD is in 6th so she is self sufficient with her work but my son is only in 1st so he naturally complains and doesn't want to be bothered most days. We're all cagey and miss our regular life, this is so hard. Some days I feel so down and then other days I feel ok. I am back and forth. I am mostly wishing away the days and counting down until Christmas because I am hoping that by then everything will have settled down and we can look back and be grateful we're past this.

I hate saying it, but I think June 1st may even be too early. They are probably just going to be able to start to begin to understand this virus and see if it will hopefully change with the warm weather.

Wuhan has just begun to lift its lockdown. It’s been over two months for them. And it won’t be lifted fully either. The rest of the world is basically just following what the other countries are doing. Let’s see what happens with that.

I'm so sorry. I found out one of my best friends was admitted to the hospital with double pneumonia. He's been sick for about a week and could not get a COVID-19 test. They gave it to him today and he'll get the results back in 48 hours.

My 8 year old keeps asking for answers I can't give him. I keep telling him this has never happened in our lifetime before. He's handling it fairly well. I am absolutely terrified though. I'm also trying to balance helping my co-workers with technology, putting my own lessons online, and homeschooling my son (meanwhile DH is here but is only focusing on work. I'm coming back as a husband in my next life).

If your kindergartener is fighting you on every lesson I would seriously just not do the work. I know kindergarten is important but unless he was really behind to begin with he will catch up. Kindergarteners are all over the place with regards to what level they are at for reading and math. I had one kid that was very far ahead, one kid that was really far behind. The school is able to give work at different levels at this age and the ones that fall behind are able to catch up fast. Don't stress yourself or him out over it. Have him do a little a day if he can - a couple work sheets here and there and then just read to him a couple of books a day.

As for the other stuff I agree that we do have to get life back to normal as soon as possible but not at the expense of 100s of thousands of lives. If we have more time to prepare we will be better equipped to save as many lives as we can. Most people will end up getting the virus at some point but no one in this country should die because they couldn't get access to a hospital bed or ventilator. What makes me so upset is that it seems like a good part of the country is still looking at NY thinking that this won't happen to them - when it's not a matter of if it will happen, just when it will happen.

I also worry about my kids and their schooling. At this rate, I worry schools will not reopen in September. Then what? They are already not getting the same education as they would have in their classrooms.

No, each state's governor makes the actual decision. The White House just made a guideline. Cuomo is going to extend it, but he's just doing it two weeks at a time. At one of his press conferences he mentioned that. I'm sure at the beginning of next week, he'll extend it to the end of the month. At this point, I don't see how he can't. They're hoping we hit the peak in roughly two weeks. Can't reopen everything right at the peak infection time.

If non essentials working from home can not go back to work until 4/30, I can’t see how the schools would go back any earlier. I didn’t hear what he just said, just on in the background so it is possibly he addressed it, not sure.

Ok, thanks that's good to know. Yeah I'm expecting him to close schools through the end of the month as well. I am praying things get better by May.

I don’t envy teachers next year.
Rooms full of unprepared kids who haven’t sat in a classroom for 6 months. It’s going to be ugly.

This is awful. I’ve been catching my 7 yr old sucking her thumb. She has never sucked her thumb, even in infancy. I am worried about the psychological effects this is having on children. My 5 yr old who is in pre k is also missing OT and SEIT services. This whole thing is a nightmare and getting very depressing
