Anybody getting unemployment?

With the extra $600 fed stimulus package, I'm hearing that people are getting MORE UNEMPLOYED than employed! How does that make any sense? Is anyone actually seeing this in their unemployment checks? As a taxpayer, I'm pretty upset over this. My small business is struggling to stay afloat. Why will laid off workers ever want to return to work if they make more (~$23/hr) staying home?!? Did anyone think this through?? These benefits will last until July 31st!

ETA:
People have commented that this is incorrect. However, the STIMULUS package that JUST PASSED is why the above is now the case! They have antiquated labor computers that for whatever reason cannot compute an amount that is less than the average miminum wage or above minimum wage earner may earn. They are giving an ADDITIONAL $600 above unemployment numbers. That is insane to me. So, yes, someone making $15 an hour may potentially now make much MORE staying home. That should never be the case. AND the benefits are until July 31st...so more than 2 months. That's a huge disincentive to return to work. This for a small business would be debilitating.

I ask because I want to know if anyone is actually experiencing it. The above is all over the news, so yes it IS happening unless the Dept of Labor gets their act together. Why taxpayer funding is being misused this way is mind boggling.

Isn't unemployment number based on what you were currently making? If you were making $16/hr, they aren't going to give you $23/hr.

And if you are going to hire them back and they choose to stay unemployed they are essentially losing their job and opportunity with your small business. Is two months of unemployment worth that?

Exactly. No one is going to choose 4 months of unemployment over a steady job.

Re: Anybody getting unemployment?

A family member is trying to get unemployment in NY and they told her she makes too much money. She was told she can only make unemployment if she makes $500 a week or less. Again that’s second hand, so I don’t know how true it is.

I don’t know how it works there, but here if you are offered a job and you turn it down, you lose your unemployment benefits.

I find that hard to believe. Part of your paycheck goes to unemployment. Unemployment is determined based on your salary at the time you were laid off or in this case unable to work. There is a cap though as to how much a person can receive so she wont be making the same amount as her normal job

Yes! $500 per week may be the max benefit you can collect but I have collected unemployment making way more than $500 per week. She might have misunderstood

That doesn't make sense. When I got laid off a few years ago, I was making way more than the max unemployment paid, but I was still able to receive unemployment - not what my salary had been, but ithe max unemployment paid

i collected unemployment last year. your weekly check is 10% (up to $500) of what your salary for the 12 months before was. I think they upped the max to $600 because of the virus, but that's all still before taxes. so max, $2400 a month before taxes.

My DH is collecting now. He’s never been laid off before. Technically he’s furloughed right now. Even with the extra money (we haven’t seen it yet) he’s definitely NOT bringing home what he does when he goes to work. Trust me we aren’t making out on this deal. Without the extra money we would be sinking badly! I work part time in a school and have no income right now myself. We are a family of 5 with 1 on the way. I’d much rather him be working.

Sadly, you'd be surprised. I speak as an employer.

Re: Anybody getting unemployment?

We were just told we have to temporarily lay off ourselves and our staff so we can all collect unemployment until we can get the small business loan to keep us going. The loan is going through chase and can takes weeks or more than a month to get. This is gonna be a tough ride

I don't find it to be taxpayer misuse. I think people need help to stay afloat. I stand by my assertion that I don't believe the vast majority of people would choose steady employment over 4 months of UE. 4 months is nothing. What would they do after the 4 months?

Its possibly an extra 600 dollars a week for 4 months.
People need all the help they can get right now.
So what if they make a little more right now? People are struggling to feed their families.

Yep. As a taxpayer I am more than happy to be funding this for now.
That's what unemployment is for.
We all may need it at some point or other in our lives. And if not, then just be happy you never needed it.

Re: Anybody getting unemployment?

I think that is ridiculous.

If I am understanding the OP correctly

If someone was only making say 400 a week they are now getting paid $1000 a week which is more than they were receiving. if that's the case then yes that misuse of money. This money is not free and we are all gong to feel the affects of this later on. And if you loose your job because of a rescission months from now your not getting that extra money then!

Now if say you made $1200 a week and your state only give yous 450 a week i think getting the full $600 extra a week is fair!

my argument would be how were they feeding their families before this if they weren't making that amount to begin with

You never know anyone's situation. Their spouse could also be out of work and had been the primary breadwinner and the unemployment is significantly less than their spouse was making.

People are so quick to judge.

Its 4 months only.

you seem to be missing the point then.

I am not judging anyone who was making more money then they get unemployment.

so if someone was making 1200 and NYS is only giving them 450 then by all means they should get the extra $600 but if someone was only making $750 a week and NYS is only giving them $450 then no they should be getting the whole $600 they should only be getting an extra $300 a week

ETA: if both parents are out of work they would both be receiving unemployment and theory should apply to both of them

then that's a problem. people will be taking advantage of this. people will not return to work even if they can because why would they if they can get paid more on unemployment.

we should not be paying millions of people extra money they were never making. That is a misuse of money

Isn't this what the one time payment for everyone is for to help people out. why are they getting extra money they arent really entitled too?

It will supply you a good amount of food if that’s what the concern is.
People are still getting paid through unemployment the argument here is that people are getting paid more money on unemployment then they did while working. Why is that ok? Why should you be getting paid more money for not working then you did while working? I am pretty sure the government should be spending that money on other things that are needed.

While it might not be a lot for some, for others, this might really help them out. Others might not need to pay bills with it but can put away as honestly, no one’s job is really secure at this time, IMO.
