Schools and Covid-19
Is it safe to say this school year is a wash?  what does this mean for September? Will remote learning over the next 3 months really be enough to make sure kids are ready to be promoted to the next grade? I am so sad to even believe it, but I just do not see how the schools will reopen before June.

I think you are right and it's awful. And I wonder about the ramifications it will have for children. Everything seems like a complete disaster right now. Right now I am just hoping they will say that they have slowed it down enough that kids can go back in a month after spring break.

I also think they're done for the year. I can't imagine the regression that the younger ones will suffer. My DCs are in HS and I can't even help them if I wanted to. It's all so strange.

My older DD is graduating her school this year and will be absolutely devastated to not step foot in the school anymore. I don’t even know how I would tell her 
I’ve been reading a ton and doing workbooks with my kids, but I know there are some families that just aren’t able to do that for various reasons. So even if some kids can easily catch up, there will be so many that are behind in the same classroom. I really feel for the teachers next year, it is going to be an extremely difficult year.
I don’t think it was New York but I did read that one of the states was giving parents the opportunity to hold their kids back if they felt it was necessary.

I'm thinking once the weather gets warmer, it won't spread as easily and maybe they'll be able to go back. Cold dry weather spreads these things faster, but it's getting warmer already so hopefully that helps. There are 3 whole months of school left. China is getting back to normal after 3 months. We should be ahead of the game since we somewhat knew what to expect.
We also don't live as close together as they do. By the time they figured out what was going on, I would think that a lot more people were already exposed. Yeah, we aren't the most prepared, but at least we knew it was coming. I doubt it will take longer than it took China to slow down.

Florida is giving parents the option of holding kids back a year. Much of FL has already completed their 3rd quarter of school (just prior to spring break here) and has testing in april and early May so the kids won't be missing as much school/learning as they might be up north.

Thank you - this post makes me feel a lot better. As it gets warmer I feel like they could also do things like hold class outside, move lunch outside, etc. Not sure they would really be willing to do this but I feel like it should be an option...

I have one daughter who struggles and has a later birthday. One of the first things I said was maybe this will be the deciding factor to hold her back a year. However, I have to say, working with her this week I think maybe she just needs more one on one attention. She's getting things so much faster than I thought she would. This might be the thing that helps keep her on track ironically. However, for parents that both work full time it is going to be really hard to keep the kids at the level they need to be at. I'm just lucky that I only work part time.

This is what I am holding on to as well. I have to have hope to stay sane
So much doom and gloom and automatic negativity from everyone. And I get it, I do.
But as for me, I need to hold on to hope like this.

I am hanging on to hope this changes. My son is in pre-k and gets OT and a SEIT and he is not getting those services. He will miss his pre-k graduation. And all the HS seniors that will miss prom and graduation I can’t imagine. We are supposed to move after the school year and I don’t know if that will happen now either. This is such a crazy time...

I think being in school is done for this year. I am sad my daughter will not have her big trip, or class graduation to move to middle school. I promised her we would go to Pennsylvania as a family to do what they would have done on the trip at a later date.
I am sad for my son, we have to cancel his bar mitzvah.

I really hope they go back, but am not holding my breath. I wouldn't want to hold my children back (they are in elementary school). Different cohort of friends, loss of a year in the academic cycle and the psychological ramifications of some held back and not others would be some of my concerns. I think teachers will do a blitz review in the start of the new year. But, a much better idea state wide would be SUMMER SCHOOL.
I am so very disappointed so far in my district. It ranks pretty well but so far remote learning has been an absolute bust. I know there are teachers on here who would disagree, but we should consider the next three months as vacation time and require mandatory summer school. God forbid you raise this point with any teacher or teacher's union, though. You'd be blasted. Unfortunately the kids will be the ones to suffer.

Yeah, I'll def just take my chances with the virus lol.
That being said. There's no way that's going to fly. First of all, there are already people screaming that they want their school taxes back for the entire time the schools are closed. As time goes on, more people will join that mob. Second, parents are being forced to find solutions. They will eventually get this homeschooling down, create networks, and if it goes on long enough they will be uncomfortable sending their kids back to public school. You'd be surprised how much people hate change, especially once their kids are into a routine. Not to mention, private schools will want to reopen sooner than later. Anyway you look at it, if public schools remain closed for to long, parents will find solutions and they won't go back.

I know. Society is changing as we know it. The young people won’t be educated very well, the middle aged can’t work because they lost their jobs, and the old people will die from this virus.
TBH, I don’t know why they said January. That’s a strange thing to say.

Out of school until Jan 2021? That's completely irresponsible. Our government fed and local is totally mishandling this situation. You cannot keep the world out of work and kids out of school for months and months and months. After a few weeks of this people will revolt.
My solution? Get your sh*t in order. Gather the medical supplies you need in the next three weeks instead of flooding the people with trillions of dollars in "relief packages" that will only serve as a bandaid. Innundate us instead with more test packaged. Turn all those empty cruise ships into makeshift hospitals. Get people back into work in in 3 weeks. Quarantine and shelter in place the older community and those at high risk. Maintain social distancing. Kids in school will not have extracurricular activities or sports, but should stay in their classrooms and limit class sizes to 25 max. No assemblies, no trips. Medications that help taper the symptoms should be explored. Etc, etc, etc.
We need real world solutions, not nationwide joblessness and restricted movement. I still maintain that the vast majority will get mild symptoms and help create a herd immunity. The number infected is so much more than the amount reported, meaning the % of mortality is so much lower than they are forecasting. In fact, I am pretty sure my husband and I have coronavirus right now. He was refused testing, so no way of knowing. How ridiculous is that?

I would be livid that your district is not teaching their kids. Mine is in full on teaching, next week starts new materials. They seem to really be on the ball. I would be sending letters to your superintendent every day to do their job. There is no excuse for them not to teach kids.
