Did you withdraw money to keep in your house? We never keep cash in our house- it would be a super sad day for a burglarChat Icon - but I feel like maybe we should? What is everyone else doing?

Re: Cash on hand

It wouldn’t hurt to have some for just in case. I wouldn’t go stuffing the mattress. But if you normally have zero cash in the house, having a couple hundred handy wouldn’t be the worst thing

Hopefully using Cc won’t become an issue

My husband always has cash on hand - he got more this week. I never do and wouldn't even think of it, honestly. I don't think ATMs will go down.

What would anyone use cash for if they can't leave their houses?

good question lol
You need credit cards- to order stuff online.
Why on earth would credit cards no longer work?

I was at the bank this past weekend and it was PACKED. I Think everyone thinks if something happens and they can't use CC's that they would need cash.. IDK....

I would keep cash on hand. I read something about the internet being slowed down due to the fact that everybody is using it.

Yes we generally do although I know right now a lot of places are scared of accepting cash because of the spread of COVID-19

I thought this too. But I also thought I wouldn't be worried about toilet paper and all this was exaggerated.. And yet here we are.

I do have some cash at home.

Re: Cash on hand

I think with the economy taking a hit, people just like to be prepared. I mean a few yrs ago in Greece, all of the sudden people couldn't get their money out of the banks. I keep a decent amount in cash. You never know.

I would definitely keep a few hundred on hand in case systems go down, cards aren’t going through at the stores, the pumps etc...

It’s not so much that, but all the systems depend on internet now. I used to work in retail and recall sometimes the internet or whatever system the banks were on would go down and we couldn’t process any credit card sales. If I’m at the food store getting essentials I’d rather have cash in case, if that makes sense. Idk why people are getting guns, they probably anticipate mass looting and robbing I guess lol

This is exactly why they are getting guns.
A friend lives in OH and she said it's crazy there with everyone getting guns and places running out of ammo.

Cyber attacks, companies are in a crisis and focused on that. Bad people could see this as an opportunity to attack the financial infrastructure.

People think the purge is going to happen that's why guns and ammo sales are soaring.

Agree.

The internet is under a huge amount of stress right now, with all of the people working from home, streaming, etc.

Other countries have asked Netflix to throttle their streaming and/or force lower quality so that other internet data can pass instead of Netflix using up 99% of the pipe.

These days, if the internet goes away for a long amount of time, that would be another disaster. At this point everyone's backend processes run over the internet. Merchants wont be able to take those credit cards, electronic payments, etc.

Plus, if there is some type of hardware failure you have to hope that there is a spare on site, because if not they are not getting overnight shipping from China.

We have cash on hand for all the reasons listed above plus if the market crashes bank accounts could be frozen. As it is some banks are closed right now due to staffing. The guns are to protect your family and property if the food supply chain stops and people try to steal from each other. We learned how the gas supply during Sandy affected everyone too. None of these things are likely to happen but I would rather be prepared then not.
